***The Bristol-based producer has unveiled her second studio album via her own Field Research imprint, exploring a more intense side of her sound that has increasingly shaped her recent work.***

Drum & bass gave gyrofield her breakthrough, but it was never the full picture. Amidst the densely programmed ‘Synopsis’ and the sparse, emotionally open ‘These Heavens,’ her catalog has traced a producer learning how much she can say by changing the space around a sound. This ability of hers has been attested with releases on mammoth labels like Metalheadz, VISION, XL Recordings and Objekt’s Kapsela, which on separate occasions have carried different sides of that approach, without settling her into one lane.

It all began in 2018, but exactly eight years later, gryofield’s debut album, ‘Great Jobs,’ brings that envious sonic range onto her own Field Research label. Released on October 21, the ten-track record turns towards post-punk and dub while keeping soundsystem music at its foundation. What the album does really well is that it places her humorous and deliberately imperfect personality closer to the surface.

The wider interests in exploring a completely unknown side to her productions were there from the beginning. Releases like ‘Evaluate Me,’ her self-released project from late 2019, helped establish her within drum & bass. The following year’s ‘Tech Flex’ EP on Overview Music and ‘Synopsis’ on mau5trap developed that identity, with the latter pushing towards colorful, densely detailed drum & bass.

Even then, the process was about more than programming complexity. ‘Because You Are You,’ released through UKF’s Pilot label, grew from keyboard performances that she recorded and pieced together. By 2021’s ‘Title Card’ on Inspected, she was describing her music as a journal shaped by melodrama and surrealism. Her move across styles was already tied to the question of what a track could express.

Over the years, gyrofield’s music has found homes across several corners of bass music. Critical Music brought ‘Retinues’ to life, VISION followed with ‘Stimulus,’ while her two-tracker on Deadbeats made room for her slower bass experiments. Metalheadz became another outlet, with tracks like ‘Oligarch’ from the seven-track ‘A Faint Glow of Bravery’ in January 2024. In the statement accompanying that record, she described reaching a point where her technical ability could express ideas by feel.

That emotional direction continued on ‘These Heavens,’ released by XL in August 2024. ‘Flower Burial’ on Kasra’s Best Intentions widened the palette later that year through house, techno, ambient and acid jazz. The following year’s ‘Suspension of Belief’ brought house, free jazz and techno to ‘Kapsela,’ becoming the first release on Objekt’s label by another artist. The most common thread here is that across her back catalog, the more consistent development is her willingness to let a particular idea determine the shape of the music.

Launching Field Research gave gyrofield control over that shape, as well as when and how the music appeared. The label opened with ‘Your Fight’ early this year. Gyrofield described the purpose behind starting her own label as extending beyond releasing her own work and offering a space for other artists with unusual or deeply personal ideas and for the artists with a growing desire to embrace vulnerability in soundsystem music.

‘Great Jobs’ is its second release. In her accompanying essay, gyrofield explains that post-punk and dub offered a vocabulary for honesty, solidarity and empathy. Those references came through active listening and study. They also gave her a way to move from the inward worlds of ‘Flower Burial’ and ‘Suspension of Belief’ towards a record more openly concerned with the friction between her inner life and the world outside it.

The writing began with ‘Burls’ in January 2025. Early demos were tested in Bristol, Berlin and Tisno; some tracks were added, others scrapped, and older sections reworked. During the finishing process, she sought out music with stylistic imperfections. Her essay describes the relief of allowing her own music to preserve her faults. That makes the album’s roughness part of its purpose, rather than a departure from the production skill that brought her here.

The album opens with ‘Birdsong,’ a fleeting, 55-second introduction that utilizes delicate, granular textures to set an atmospheric stage before immediately plunging the listener into the sprawling depths of ‘Ma Sacrée.’ Clocking in at over six minutes, this second track is an absolute schooling in weaving intricate, leftfield drum programming with expansive sound design that establishes the album’s cerebral yet physical aesthetic. It demands patience, rewarding the listener with a deeply immersive sonic environment that can feel expansive and claustrophobic at the same time.

The momentum then shifts sharply with the album’s title track and lead single, ‘Great Jobs (Don’t Wanna).’ gyrofield pumps a tangible post-punk defiance into her restless breakbeats. It’s the thematic heart of the album, taking the frustrations of society and the pressures of modern labor and turning them into a kinetic, dancefloor-ready weapon. That rebellious, neuro-tinged energy bleeds seamlessly into ‘Take Backs,’ a driving, low-end heavy cut that flexes the razor-sharp percussion and bass weight that originally put her on the map, albeit now refined with a much broader experimental palette.

But as the album moves into the middle act, the structural complexity grows. ‘Burls’ is very much in the IDM realm, a thick, gnarled mass of sound that does justice to its namesake, coiling synthetic textures around wayward rhythms. This subtle technicality is the setup for ‘Mid Journey,’ a cut that serves as the album’s anchor. It balances a propulsive, club-focused momentum with a sweeping, atmospheric undertone, serving as a dynamic bridge between the record’s combative first half and its emotionally charged conclusion.

The weight of the album’s conceptual focus becomes most apparent on ‘Force A Smile.’ Spanning six minutes, the track juxtaposes heavy, relentless rhythmic frameworks with a sense of masked vulnerability, translating the emotional toll of resilience, so to speak, into a devastating piece of head-turning electronic music. This intensity is then suddenly suspended by the arresting brevity of ‘Drinking From Your Hand.’ Lasting merely 33 seconds, this fragile, intimate interlude provides a necessary gasp of air and strips itself away from the dense productions we witnessed leading up to the filler.

The calm is intentionally short-lived, violently shattered by ‘Deafening Overdub,’ a chaotic and densely layered exploration of distortion. It’s a haunting piece of music that feels like a sonic representation of sensory overload, which utilizes walls of manipulated audio and fractured breaks to overwhelm in the most captivating way possible. The chaos eventually subsides into the cinematic closer, ‘Ende.’ Melancholic yet determined, the final track offers a reflective denouement that closes out the album gracefully, sealing ‘Great Jobs’ as a fiercely independent, boundary-pushing statement from one of electronic music’s most vital contemporary voices.
