Set in France, 1770, Marianne (Noémie Merlant), a painter, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse, (Adèle Haenel), the young daughter of a French countess. Since the female artist must paint Héloïse without her knowing, Marriane observes her by day, to paint her secretly.
