With so many things going on around the world, we must raise awareness of these issues concerning us and the people on this planet. One such way of doing so is by observing international days and weeks that are occasions held to educate the public on issues of concern.<\/p>\n

April 2, 2022<\/span><\/h2>\n

World Autism Awareness Day<\/span><\/h2>\n

This year\u2018s observance of \u2018World Autism Awareness Day\u2019 will\u00a0<\/span>address<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u201cinclusive education in the context of SDG 4 – the promise and reality – through a virtual event\u201d. The event will include a moderated panel discussion, along with brief presentations by self-advocates, educators and other experts.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the UN\u00a0<\/span>website<\/span><\/a>, \u201cThe theme of inclusive education is intrinsically linked with the focus of last year\u2019s WAAD observance, \u201cInclusion in the Workplace\u201d with panelists in last year\u2019s event emphasizing how crucial it is to foster inclusive quality education for people on the autism spectrum.\u201d This is so that they can fulfill their potential and achieve sustainable success in the labor market.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn this respect, inclusive education is the key to the transformative promise of the Sustainable Development Goals, to<\/b> LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND<\/b><\/a>,\u201d states<\/a> the United Nations website.<\/p>\n

The event is organized by the UN Department of Global Communications and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs. It is supported by civil society partners. This includes the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, the Global Autism Project and the Specialisterne Foundation.<\/p>\n

April 4, 2022<\/span><\/h2>\n

On 8 December 2005, the General Assembly<\/span>\u00a0declared<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that every year, April 4 shall be observed as the \u2018International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action\u2019. It \u201c<\/span>called<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for continued efforts by States with the assistance of the United Nations and relevant organizations, to foster the establishment and development of national mine-action capacities in countries where mines and explosive remnants of war constitute a serious threat to the safety, health and lives of the civilian population, or an impediment to social and economic development at the national and local levels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s theme for the observation of the day is: \u201cSafe Ground, Safe Steps, Safe Home,\u201d with the focus of the observance being on the impressive achievements of the global mine action community.<\/p>\n

International Day of Conscience\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The General Assembly<\/span>\u00a0declared<\/span><\/a>\u00a0April 5 the International Day of Conscience. They took this decision keeping in mind the \u201cconscious of the need for the creation of conditions of stability and well-being and peaceful and friendly relations based on respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion,\u201d as per the UN website.<\/span><\/p>\n

The General Assembly\u00a0<\/span>invites<\/span><\/a>\u00a0officials and individuals to \u201cbuild the Culture of Peace with Love and Conscience in accordance with the culture and other appropriate circumstances or customs of their local, national and regional communities, including through quality education and public awareness-raising activities, thereby fostering<\/span>\u00a0sustainable development<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

On 7 April, UNESCO commemorates the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. It was\u00a0<\/span>established<\/span><\/a>\u00a0by the United Nations General Assembly (link is external) in 2003. 7 April is the date that marks the beginning of the genocide perpetrated against members of the Tutsi minority by the Hutu extremist-led government.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to UNESCO, \u201cwithin just over 100 days, more than 1 million Tutsi were systematically\u00a0<\/span>murdered<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and moderate Hutu and others who opposed the massacres were also killed during this period.\u201d \u201cUNESCO is committed to promoting<\/span>\u00a0education about genocides<\/span><\/a>\u00a0as a means to sensitize learners for the causes, dynamics and consequences of such crimes and to strengthen their resilience against all forms of discrimination,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>states<\/span><\/a>\u00a0their website.<\/span><\/p>\n

April 14, 2022<\/span><\/h2>\n

April 14 is marked as World Chagas Disease Day and was observed for the first time in 2020. Chagas disease, also known as “silent or silenced disease”, \u201caffects mainly poor people without access to health care or people without a political voice,\u201d as per the WHO\u00a0<\/span>website<\/span><\/a>. The disease progresses slowly.<\/span><\/p>\n

It often shows an asymptomatic clinical course and without treatment, Chagas disease can\u00a0<\/span>lead<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to severe cardiac and digestive alterations and become fatal, as per WHO. WHO website\u00a0<\/span>states<\/span><\/a>: \u201cRaising awareness of the disease is essential to improve the rates of early treatment and cure, together with the interruption of its transmission.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As per the UN website, the date April 20 was selected as the Chinese Language Day as the date was \u201c<\/span>selected<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from Guyu (“Rain of Millet”), which is the 6th of 24 solar terms in the traditional East Asian calendars, to pay tribute to Cangjie,\u201d is a very important figure in ancient China. World Creativity and Innovation Day<\/span><\/h2>\n

The United Nations declared 21 April as World Creativity and Innovation Day. The day was marked to \u201c<\/span>raise<\/span><\/a>\u00a0the awareness of the role of creativity and innovation in all aspects of human development.\u201d Creativity has, both, monetary and non-monetary value as the creative economy is a \u201chighly\u00a0<\/span>transformative<\/span><\/a>\u00a0sector of the world economy in terms of income generation, job creation, and export earnings,\u201d as per the UN website.<\/span><\/p>\n

This creative economy includes audiovisual products, design, new media, performing arts, publishing, and visual arts. At the same time, creativity and culture have a significant non-monetary value. World Immunization Week is celebrated in the last week of April. It aims to \u201chighlight the collective action needed and to promote the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against disease,\u201d as per the WHO\u00a0<\/span>website<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

WHO works with countries across the globe. They do this to \u201c<\/span>raise awareness<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of the value of vaccines and immunization and ensure that governments obtain the necessary guidance and technical support to implement high-quality immunization programs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The UN General Assembly has proclaimed<\/a> 25 April as International Delegate\u2019s Day. This decision was taken to \u201craise<\/a> awareness of the role of the representatives and delegates of the Member States to the United Nations.\u201d<\/p>\n

International Delegate\u2019s Day marks the anniversary of the first day of the San Francisco Conference<\/a>. This was also known as the United Nations Conference on International Organization. On 25 April 1945, delegates from fifty countries came together for the first time in San Francisco after the devastation of the second world war. \u201cTheir aim was to set up an organization that would restore world peace and imposes rules on the post-war world order,\u201d states<\/a> the UN website.<\/p>\n

International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day<\/span><\/h2>\n

In the now territories of Belarus, Ukraine and the Russian Federation, an explosion<\/a> at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986 spread a radioactive cloud. (It spread over large parts of the then Soviet Union). \u201cNearly 8.4 million people in the three countries were exposed<\/a> to the radiation\u201d and on \u201c8 December 2016 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution<\/a> declaring 26 April as International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day,\u201d states the UN website.<\/p>\n

It\u00a0<\/span>recognized<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that three decades after the disaster, there remain persistent serious long-term consequences. The World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an \u201cawareness-raising campaign intended to focus international attention on the magnitude of the problem and on how promoting and creating a safety and health culture can help reduce the number of work-related deaths and injuries,\u201d states<\/a> the UN website.<\/p>\n

This year International Girls in ICT Day will be celebrated on April 28 and its theme is \u201cAccess and Safety\u201d. As per the ITU website, the theme this year was \u201cselected<\/a> due to the discouraging and dangerous obstacles girls can sometimes face in the digital environment.\u201d \u201cIn consultation with girls and young women, we identified challenges to highlight that they may face as they begin their journey in the digital environment, and possible solutions to these challenges,\u201d states<\/a> the ITU website.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year and every year, ITU and its partners will work together on developing<\/a> solutions and ideas for lowering barriers and improving safety online. When girls can safely access and explore the digital world, they can start to imagine future STEM careers, ICT education, and futures in technology for themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n
