The music industry’s biggest night of the year – the 64th Annual Grammy Awards was held in Las Vegas. The host for the evening was Trevor Noah.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two brand-new categories had been introduced for the 2022 GRAMMYs Awards show \u2013 \u2018Best Global Music Performance (Global Music Field)\u2019 and \u2018Best M\u00fasica Urbana Album (Latin Music Field)\u2019 bringing the total current number of GRAMMY Award categories to 86.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jon Batiste was the most-awarded artist this year with five wins. The Foo Fighters and Silk Sonic swept the Grammys by winning all the awards they were nominated for. Olivia Rodrigo, Doja Cat, Baby Keem, SZA, Jazmine Sullivan and Lucky Daye were among the first-time Grammy winners.<\/span><\/p>\n

Black Coffee Wins His First-Ever Grammy Award <\/span><\/h2>\n

Black Coffee becomes the first South African producer to win or be nominated in the Best Dance\/Electronic Album category. He earned the award for his 2021 LP, ‘Subconsciously’<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/em>This prize was presented in the pre-ceremony of the award show. The artist donned a sharp white suit.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI want to thank God for the gift of music and being able to share it with the world and heal some souls,” the winner\u00a0<\/span>said<\/span><\/a>. Black Coffee also pointed out that the young man on stage with him was his first-born son, Esona, and that he has five children back home in Johannesburg to take to future ceremonies, as per\u00a0<\/span>Billboard<\/span><\/a>. The artist also thanked his album collaborators, including Pharrell and David Guetta. Black Coffee\u00a0<\/span>says<\/span><\/a>\u00a0they, \u201cbelieved in working with a smaller artist like myself and trusting me and trusting my ear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It had its characteristics with the musicians rocking outfits featuring card-inspired hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs. It is already a big night for the group as they bagged the Best R&B Song for ‘Leave the Door Open’ and Best R&B Performance as the song tied with Jazmine Sullivan’s ‘Pick Up Your Feelings’.

The rapper then went on to thank his “support system”, the city of Las Vegas, his family, “the women that raised” him “to shape” him “to become the man” he is today. Baby Keem also thanked his “incredible team”.<\/p>\n

John Legend took the Grammys stage with a number of Ukrainian artists. They paid tribute to the lives lost in Ukraine. The artists of the world continue sending support to those who are still living through the war in the moving performance introduced by Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.<\/p>\n

Zelenskyy urged those in the audience (both in Las Vegas and at home) to continue offering support in whatever way they could to his homeland via a pretaped video message. \u201cThe war \u2014 what is more opposite to music? The silence of ruined cities and killed people,\u201d he\u00a0<\/span>said<\/span><\/a>. \u201cWe defend our freedom. To live. To love. To sound. On our land, we are fighting Russia, which brings horrible silence with its bombs \u2014 the dead silence. Fill the silence with your music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Legend sat at a grand piano to perform his new song \u201cFree”, which\u00a0<\/span>sampled<\/span><\/a>\u00a0pieces of the spiritual ‘Go Down, Moses’. The moving ballad saw the singer-songwriter urging for an end to the fighting in Europe. As he continued, the star was joined on stage by two Ukrainian artists, one of them was – Siuzanna Iglidan, a Denver-based musician, originally from Odessa, Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n

Iglidan appeared backing up Legend while playing the bandura. The bandura is a traditional Ukrainian folk instrument. The pair were then joined by Mika Newton. Newton is a Ukrainian singer who sang a verse in Ukrainian. Finally, they were joined by Lyuba Yakimchuk.<\/p>\n

Yakimchuk is a Ukrainian poet who\u00a0<\/span>fled<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Ukraine \u201cjust days ago,\u201d according to the broadcast. They offered a prayer-like stanza to close the performance,\u00a0<\/span>saying<\/span><\/a>, \u201cForgive us our destroyed cities, even though we do not forgive for them our enemies.” \u201cShield and protect my husband, my parents, my child and my motherland.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

John Legend was not nominated for any awards at Sunday\u2019s ceremony. However, he was\u00a0<\/span>honored<\/span><\/a>\u00a0earlier in the week with the first inaugural global impact award by the Recording Academy\u2019s Black Music Collective.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jazmine Sullivan took home the Best R&B Album for ‘Heaux Tales’ beating out fellow nominees Snoh Aalegra, Jon Batiste, Leon Bridges, and H.E.R. “I don’t know what I heard. I almost didn’t believe it but I’m so grateful to be up here,” Sullivan, who was surprised, told the audience. She gave a nod to her fellow nominee H.E.R., “Shout-out to H.E.R. for wearing these glasses in the dark, girl. I fell like 10 times tonight, so you go for that,” she joked.<\/p>\n

The star told the audience in her acceptance speech, “I think that I wrote this project to deal with my own shame and unforgiveness around some of the decisions that I made in my 20s that weren’t favorable.” “But, what it ended up being was a safe space for Black women to tell their stories, for us to learn from each other, laugh with each other, and not be exploited at the same time,” she continued.<\/p>\n

“And that’s what I’m most grateful for,” Sullivan said. “So, shout-out to all black women who are just living their lives and being beautiful. I love you all. Thank you to everybody who helped me create ‘Heaux Tales’.” She concluded her speech by thanking her family, friends, and her team. Sullivan won her first two Grammy wins in the same year.<\/p>\n

Olivia Rodrigo won the Best Pop Vocal Album Grammy Award for her hit debut album ‘Sour’. “Thank you to the Recording Academy, thanks to all the fans who have listened to my music and completely changed my life for the past two years,” she said while accepting the award.<\/p>\n

Rodrigo dedicated her win to her parents, who, when she “was nine years old”, told her mom she was going to be “an Olympic gymnast” even though “I could barely do a cartwheel and she thought I was joking but I got super defensive.” “So, the next week, when I told her I was going to win a Grammy, she was very supportive even though I’m sure she thought it was just a little-kid pipe dream,” the singer continued.<\/p>\n

“I want to thank my mom for being supportive of all of my dreams, no matter how crazy. I want to thank my mom and my dad for being as equally as proud of me for winning a Grammy as they were when I learned how to do a back walkover.” “This is for you guys and because of you guys. Thank you,” the star concluded her speech.<\/p>\n

The Foo Fighters won all the three Grammy awards they were nominated for, taking home Best Rock Performance for ‘Making a Fire’, Best Rock Song for ‘Waiting on a War’, and Best Rock Album for ‘Medicine at Midnight’. The Grammys had a brief montage celebrating the band\u2019s drummer Taylor Hawkins. Hawkins died on March 25 this year. The video montage blended interviews and backstage home movies with live footage. It ended in an audience singalong of the group\u2019s \u201cMy Hero.\u201d<\/p>\n

“The news arrives days after the group\u00a0<\/span>pulled out<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of a previously scheduled\u00a0<\/span>Grammys<\/span><\/a>\u00a0performance after the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins (they also\u00a0<\/span>canceled<\/span><\/a>\u00a0the rest of their shows for 2022),” as per\u00a0<\/span>Rolling Stone<\/span><\/a>. The Grammys took a moment to remember Taylor. They also took a moment to remember all of those in the music community who we lost in the past year.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Foo Fighters is now the most awarded American band in Grammys history with fifteen wins.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beating out fellow nominees Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga – ‘I Get a Kick Out of You’, Justin Bieber and Benny Blanco – ‘Lonely’, BTS – ‘Butter’, and Coldplay – ‘Higher Power’, Doja Cat and SZA won the Best Pop Duo\/Group Performance for their song ‘Kiss Me More’. Although their acceptance speech turned out as a joke, with Doja Cat rushing out of the bathroom to make it to the stage to accept the award, it soon became an emotional speech.<\/p>\n

“Listen,” she paused to catch her breath. “I’ve never taken such a fast piss in my whole life,” the star joked. “Thank you, everybody. I really appreciate it.”<\/p>\n

“Thank you to my family, my team, and I wouldn’t be here without my fans – and you know what SZA, you are everything to me,” Doja Cat began. “You are incredible, you’re the epitome of talent. You’re a lyricist, you’re everything and I need you to say something, just something. Please give them something,” she told SZA on stage.<\/p>\n

SZA, then took over, saying, “Thank you Doja, thank you to my mama, thank you to God, and thank you all.” “I’m glad you made it back in time!” SZA said to Doja.<\/p>\n

Doja held her tears back, beginning to speak, but as the audience cheered her on and all she could say was “Damn,” through tears. “I like to downplay a lot of shit. But, this is a, it’s a big deal,” she continued to speak through tears. “Thank you, everybody. Be Safe. Take Care,” the artist concluded her speech. Doja and SZA’s win joins Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande’s ‘Rain On Me’ as the only all-female collaboration to ever win the Best Pop Duo\/Group Performance. This was both Doja Cat and SZA’s first Grammy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Presented by Keith Urban, Silk Sonic picked up the Record of the Year for their hit ‘Leave the Door Open’. “We are really trying our hardest to remain humble at this point, okay? But in the industry, we call that a clean sweep,” joked Anderson .Paak. He was referencing the duo’s wins for Song of the Year, Best R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

“All the other nominees – y’all know we love y’all!” .Paak said. “Drinks are on Silk Sonic tonight. We’re getting drunk!” “I know a lot of y’all fans might be upset, so we’re gonna get out of here before the internet gets to talking,” he continued. The singer then invited Bruno Mars to share a few words. Bruno Mars, the ‘Uptown Funk’ singer kept it short and simple, saying, “God bless you all, good night!”<\/p>\n

Jon Batiste won the Album of the Year award for ‘We Are’. The singer was up against fellow nominees – Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga – ‘Love for Sale’, Justin Bieber – ‘Justice’, Doja Cat – ‘Planet Her’, Billie Eilish – ‘Happier Than Ever’, H.E.R. – ‘Back of my Mind’, Lil Nas X – ‘Montero’, Olivia Rodrigo – ‘Sour’, Taylor Swift – ‘Evermore’, and Kanye West – ‘Donda’.<\/p>\n

Batiste is the first Black artist to win Album of the Year at the Grammys in fourteen years, since 2008. \u201cI believe this to my core, there is no best musician, the best artist, best dancer, best actor \u2026 the creative arts are subjective and they reach people at a point in their lives when they need it most. It\u2019s like a song or an album is made and it almost has a radar to find the person when they need it the most,\u201d the singer\u00a0<\/span>reflected<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on how powerful music can be while accepting his trophy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Batiste\u00a0<\/span>said<\/span><\/a>\u00a0the craft of music is \u201cmore than entertainment\u201d but rather a \u201cspiritual practice\u201d for him. He thanked his team and gave a shout-out to the family members featured on his album. Arooj Aftab Became the First Pakistani Woman to Win A Grammy<\/span><\/h2>\n

US-based Pakistani singer and composer Arooj Aftab bagged the Best Global Music Performance award, becoming the first Pakistani woman to win a Grammy with her single \u2018Mohabbat\u2019 from her 2021 album, \u2018Vulture Prince\u2019. The singer was up against Ang\u00e9lique Kidjo, Burna Boy, Femi Kuti, Yo-Yo Ma, Wizkid and Tems. She was also nominated for the Best New Artist Award alongside FINNEAS, Baby Keem, Japanese Breakfast, The Kid LAROI and more, in the category that was won by Olivia Rodrigo.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I\u2019m going to faint\u2026 I feel like this category has been so insane,\u201d Aftab said onstage as she accepted the Best Global Music Performance award, per\u00a0<\/span>Pitchfork<\/span><\/em><\/a>. The singer is a Berklee\u00a0<\/span>graduate<\/span><\/a>\u00a0with a degree in music production and engineering and jazz composition, as per NME. She began her musical career scoring films in New York City in 2010, eventually earning plaudits for her work in the documentary ‘Armed With Faith’. It won an Emmy Award in 2018, and last year, Aftab had a\u00a0<\/span>breakout moment.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0This came after former US President Barack Obama included \u2018Mohabbat\u2019 on\u00a0<\/span>his summer playlist<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
