We had a word with Mumbai-based punk\/alternative rock band The Lightyears Explode as they round out 2023 on a high with their second album, ‘Suburban Prose,’ released via No Binary Records.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A decade after dropping their immortal full-length debut album ‘The Revenge of Kalicharan<\/a>,’ comprising of mosh pit kick-starters ‘Kunj Gutka,’ ‘Diet Coke,’ and ‘Garam Dharam,’ The Lightyears Explode stay faithful to their sound while weaving in a menacing new sonic tapestry on their sophomore outing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This album, considering we started writing it so many years after the first one, was completely different from the first one,” Saurabh Roy and Shalom Benjamin of The Lightyears Exploded revealed to us. “We hardly even made proper demos for that one and the first time we heard the songs properly was when it was all done. This album was more articulate, considered, and economical with its arrangement and production. Lyrically, the first one had a lot of bravado while this one is more vulnerable and personal.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Suburban Prose’ is an earnest take on topics of mental health, prescription drugs, inter-familial political clashes, growing up with social media, and feeling unfulfilled as adults in their city. Plummeting into these subjects, the punk rockers said, “We would love some listeners to connect to the themes of the album on a personal level and get a wholesome, romantic, and slightly nostalgic comfort from the fact that even though they\u2019re hurting or struggling, they are not alone, they matter and they are special. This is what our favorite albums make us feel.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group’s previously released singles, ‘Fighting With Your Family,’ ‘Fake It! Shake it! Make it!’ ‘Big Big Love,’ and ‘Pills’ all feature on the new record. We indeed requested the band to highlight a memorable experience while writing, producing, or recording the album, and they pointed out the makings of ‘Pills.’ It is the first single from ‘Suburban Prose,’ which was released in March 2023, and one could even say its theme is a modern rendition of Metallica’s thrash metal hit ‘Master of Puppets.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They stated, “I think the first song ‘Pills’ was really important. We wrote it and had a solid demo in like an hour. It gave us the direction and standard we wanted the album to have. Economical structures, quiet to loud dynamics, big pop hooks, and honest lyrics with big distorted guitars. It was important for us that even if the music sounded poppy and youthful in the sense that the lyrical themes were honest to our age and situation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breaking down the music, the new addition ‘Literally Kicks’ is an upbeat alternative\/rock jam oozing with thumping drum action, waxed synth work, and slick guitar segments. ‘The Pigs Have Eyes,’ a tune on surveillance in the city, slaps on their staple punk rock\/hard rock attire with rich reverberating bass plucks, robust vocals, and captivating production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
