One such way of doing so is by observing international days and weeks<\/a> that are occasions held to educate the public on issues of concern. These Awareness days are commemorated \u201cto mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity,\u201d says the UN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We have compiled a long list of all the Awareness Days marked in November 2021 that you should know of to help bring about a change.<\/p>\n

November 2, 2021 – Tuesday<\/h3>\n

The United Nations General Assembly recognizes and proclaims November 2 as the \u2018International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists\u2019 in General Assembly Resolution A\/RES\/68\/163<\/a>. The Resolution urged the Member States to implement definite measures countering the present culture of impunity. It condemns all attacks and violence against journalists and media workers.<\/p>\n

This day is observed annually to draw attention to the low conviction rate for violent crimes against journalists and media workers around the world. They chose this date (November 2) in commemoration of the assassination of two French journalists in Mali on 2 November 2013. The landmark resolution also urges the Member States to do their utmost to prevent violence against journalists and media workers.<\/p>\n

It encourages them \u201cto ensure accountability, brings to justice perpetrators of crimes against journalists and media workers, and ensure that victims have access to appropriate remedies\u201d as per the UN website<\/a>. Furthermore, the UN website states that the resolution calls<\/a> upon States to promote a safe and enabling environment for journalists to perform their work independently and without undue interference.<\/p>\n

November 4, 2021 – Thursday<\/h3>\n

International Day Against Violence and Bullying at School, including Cyberbullying<\/h4>\n

This year UNESCO marks the \u2018International Day Against Violence and Bullying at School Including Cyberbullying\u2019 on Thursday 4 November 2021 under the theme \u201cTackling cyberbullying and other forms of online violence involving children and young people\u201d.<\/p>\n

The UNESCO Member States declared the first Thursday of November (this year on November 4) as this Awareness Day that recognizes that school-related violence \u201cin all its forms is an infringement of children and adolescents\u2019 rights to education as well as to health and well-being\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2018International Day Against Violence and Bullying at School Including Cyberbullying\u2019 calls upon the Member States, UN partners, other relevant international and regional organizations, as well as civil society, to help promote, celebrate, and facilitate the international day. It also includes non-governmental organizations, individuals, and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n

This Day \u201ccalls on global awareness of the problem of online violence and cyberbullying, its consequences and the need to put an end to it\u201d as per their website<\/a>. According to UNESCO<\/a>, it calls on the attention of people such as \u201cstudents, parents, members of the educational community, education authorities and a range of sectors and partners, including the tech industry, to encourage everyone to take a part in preventing online violence for the safety and wellbeing of children and youth\u201d.<\/p>\n

November 5, 2021 – Friday<\/h3>\n

World Tsunami Awareness Day<\/h4>\n

By the year 2030, an estimated fifty percent of the world’s population will live in coastal areas exposed to flooding, storms, and tsunamis, according<\/a> to the United Nations. It will be helpful to build more resilience and protect the populations at risk if plans and policies are in place to reduce the horrible impacts of tsunamis. Therefore, in December 2015, the UN General Assembly designated<\/a> 5 November as World Tsunami Awareness Day.<\/p>\n

As per UN<\/a>, it \u201ccalls on countries, international bodies and civil society to raise tsunami awareness and share innovative approaches to risk reduction\u201d. Japan came up with the idea for this Awareness Day as it has had a bitter and repetitive experience of tsunamis. This experience has over the years \u201cbuilt<\/a> up major expertise in areas such as tsunami early warning, public action and building back better after a disaster to reduce future impacts\u201d according to the website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

United Nations states<\/a> that \u201cUN Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) facilitates the observance of World Tsunami Awareness Day in collaboration with the rest of the United Nations system.\u201d Although tsunamis are rare events, they can be extremely deadly. The highest number of deaths in the past hundred years was in the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004 that caused an estimated 227,000 fatalities in fourteen countries, with Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand hardest-hit.<\/p>\n

World Day of Romani Language<\/h4>\n

UNESCO proclaimed the \u2018World Day of Romani Language\u2019 in 2015 to promote the preservation of the Romani language as Ms. Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, said<\/a> on 5 November 2019 on the occasion of World Day of Romani Language: \u201c\u2018Language alone protects us from the scariness of things with no names. Language alone is meditation.’<\/i> Those words, by the late Toni Morrisson, tell us how a language cannot be reduced to the words that comprise it or to meanings supposedly equivalent from one language to another.”<\/p>\n

“It is an experience of the world, a symbolic universe containing knowledge, stories, cultures, identities, and ways of seeing, living, and feeling,” Azoulay added<\/a>. This day is observed “to promote the culture, improve<\/a> the well-being of Romani people, and recognize the importance of all languages, whose diversity is a source of strength for all societies to share, as per UNESCO.<\/p>\n

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)<\/a> has found that over the last sixty years, at least forty percent of all internal conflicts have been linked to the exploitation of natural resources. These include high-value resources such as timber, diamonds, gold, and oil, or scarce resources such as fertile land and water. Moreover, the conflicts involving natural resources have also been found to be twice as likely to relapse, as per the United Nations website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Therefore, according to the UN<\/a>, on 5 November 2001, the UN General Assembly declared 6 November of each year as the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict (A\/RES\/56\/4<\/a>).<\/p>\n

International Week of Science and Peace<\/h4>\n

The International Week of Science and Peace was first observed<\/a> in 1986. It was observed as part of the observance of the International Year of Peace and based on the success of this occasion, the organizers continued their efforts in the following years.<\/p>\n

In recognition of the value of the annual observance, the General Assembly adopted resolution 43\/61<\/a> in December 1988, which proclaimed the \u201cInternational Week of Science and Peace\u201d, to take place each year during the week in which 11 November falls, according to the United Nations website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The annual observance of this day is making an important contribution to the promotion of peace as it encourages greater academic exchanges on a subject of universal importance while also generating greater awareness of the relationship of science and peace among the general public, as per the UN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

UNESCO proclaimed this day in 2001. \u2018World Science Day for Peace and Development\u2019 has generated many concrete projects, programs, and funding for science around the world and according to the United Nations.<\/a> It has also \u201chelped foster cooperation between scientists living in regions marred by conflict\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2018World Science Day for Peace and Development\u2019 is celebrated every year on 10 November. It \u201chighlights the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues and also underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives,\u201d as per the UN website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

By linking science more closely with society, the day aims to ensure that citizens are kept informed of developments in science as well as underscores the role scientists play in expanding our understanding of the outstanding, exceptional, fragile planet we call home. It also helps in making our societies more sustainable.<\/p>\n

World Antibiotic Awareness Week<\/h4>\n

The World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) is observed annually. WAAV aims to increase awareness of global antimicrobial resistance. According to WHO<\/a>, it is celebrated to encourage best practices among the general public, health workers, and policymakers to avoid the further emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections.<\/p>\n

\u201cA global action plan to tackle the growing problem of resistance to antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines was endorsed at the Sixty-eighth World Health Assembly in May 2015\u201d. World Diabetes Day<\/h4>\n

In 2007 General Assembly adopted resolution 61\/225<\/a> designating 14 November as World Diabetes Day. This document recognized \u201cthe urgent need to pursue multilateral efforts to promote and improve human health, and provide access to treatment and health-care education,\u201d as per the UN website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to the UN<\/a>, an estimated 422 million adults were living with diabetes in 2014 worldwide, compared to 108 million in 1980. This global prevalence of diabetes has nearly doubled since 1980, rising from 4.7% to 8.5% in the adult population. The resolution also encouraged the Member States to develop national policies for the prevention, treatment, and care of diabetes in line with the sustainable development<\/a> of their healthcare systems as the disease is \u201ca major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, and lower limb amputation\u201d.<\/p>\n

It reminds the world that theft, looting, and illicit trafficking of cultural property \u201ctakes place in every country, robbing people of their culture, identity, and history and that we have to work together to combat this crime\u201d according to UNESCO<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Illicitly traded cultural property is often transferred either through illicit markets worldwide such as auctions, including through the Internet, and to prevent this, people, governments, the art market, and institutions can help in this fight by raising awareness. They can help by being informed and ethical when buying and selling art and cultural objects, enacting and respecting laws, and protecting cultural heritage and property.<\/p>\n

According to their website<\/a>, UNESCO first adopted 14 November as the International Day against Illicit Trafficking in Cultural Property during its 40th General Conference<\/a> in 2019. They aimed to draw more attention to this crime and the ways to combat it.<\/p>\n

UNESCO also intended to highlight the importance of international cooperation and proactive measures through the Convention<\/a> on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property (1970). According to the UN<\/a>, in 1996, the UN General Assembly (by resolution 51\/95<\/a>) invited UN Member States to observe the International Day for Tolerance<\/a> on 16 November. For the day\u2019s fiftieth anniversary on 16 November 1995, UNESCO’s Member States adopted a Declaration of Principles on Tolerance<\/a> which, among other things, affirms that \u201ctolerance is respect and appreciation of the rich variety of our world’s cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cTolerance recognizes the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of others,\u201d said the UN website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

World Philosophy Day<\/h4>\n

In 2005 the UNESCO General Conference proclaimed<\/a> that World Philosophy Day<\/a> would be celebrated every third Thursday of November and in establishing this day they strive to \u201cpromote an international culture of philosophical debate that respects human dignity and diversity\u201d as per UNESCO<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The World Philosophy Day encourages academic exchange and highlights the contribution of philosophical knowledge in addressing global issues and underlines the \u201cenduring value of philosophy for the development of human thought, for each culture and for each individual\u201d, as per UNESCO website<\/a>. November 21, 2021 – Sunday<\/h3>\n

World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims<\/h4>\n

WHO launched a Global status report<\/a> on road safety in December 2018, as per the UN website<\/a>. This report highlighted<\/a> that the number of road traffic deaths per year has reached 1.35 million. Road traffic injuries are now the leading killer of people aged five to twenty-nine years and this burden is disproportionately borne by pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.<\/p>\n

A higher proportion of these deaths in particular occur among those living in developing countries. The observance of the \u2018World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims\u2019 in accordance with the General Assembly has extended to an increasing number of countries on every continent.<\/p>\n

This Day has become an important tool in global efforts to reduce road casualties as well as offers an opportunity for drawing attention to the scale of the emotional and economic devastation caused by road crashes. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 November as World Television Day in recognition of the increasing influence television has on decision-making. Television has helped bring world attention to conflicts and threats to peace and security.<\/p>\n

It has played a potential role in sharpening the focus on other major issues, that include economic and social issues. The Day is not so much about the celebration of the television as a tool. \u2018World Television Day\u2019 celebrates the philosophy the television represents and acknowledges its ability to inform, channel, and affect public opinion.<\/p>\n

Another pandemic has emerged along with the novel coronavirus, as data and reports from those on the front lines have shown that all types of violence against women and girls, particularly domestic violence, have intensified in this period which the UN calls the \u201cShadow Pandemic\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to the UN website<\/a>, the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women<\/a> issued by the UN General Assembly in 1993, defines<\/a> violence against women as \u201cany act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.\u201d<\/p>\n

The adverse psychological, sexual, and reproductive health consequences of VAWG affect women at all stages of their life. While gender-based violence can happen to anyone, anywhere, some women and girls are particularly vulnerable, according to the United Nations<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This includes young girls and older women, women who identify as lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or intersex, as per the UN website<\/a>. Migrants and refugees, indigenous women and ethnic minorities, or women and girls living with HIV and disabilities, and those living through humanitarian crises are also particularly vulnerable to this violence.<\/p>\n

It takes place on 26 November every year and the aim of the Day is to encourage the protection of the olive tree as well as the values it embodies. It is also observed to appreciate its important social, cultural, economic, and environmental significance to humanity.<\/p>\n

International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People<\/h4>\n

According to the United Nations website<\/a>, the General Assembly called for the annual observance of 29 November as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (resolution 32\/40 B<\/a>) and on that day in 1947, the Assembly adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine (resolution 181 (II))<\/a>. The history of the serious efforts to achieve chemical disarmament that culminated in the conclusion of the Chemical Weapons Convention<\/a> began over a century ago as these weapons were used on a massive scale during World War I. The use of chemical weapons resulted in more than 100,000 fatalities and a million casualties.<\/p>\n

This Chemical Weapons Convention entered into force on 29 April 1997 and was adopted in 1993 determined, \u201cfor the sake of all mankind, to exclude completely the possibility of the use of chemical weapons,\u201d (Preamble) as per the UN website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to their website<\/a>, the Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention, at its 20th Session, decided<\/a> that \u201ca memorial Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare would be observed on 30 November each year or, when appropriate, on the first day of the regular session of the Conference.\u201d<\/p>\n

It provides an opportunity to pay tribute to the victims of chemical warfare. This commemoration also offers a chance to reaffirm the commitment of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)<\/a> to eliminate the threat of chemical weapons, thereby promoting the goals of peace, security, and multilateralism, as per the UN<\/a>.<\/p>\n
