TF Daily Feed: Joni Mitchell and Neil Young Take Their Music Off Spotify

The artists have withdrawn from the platform following protests over anti-vax content.

Canadian pop and folk artist, Joni Mitchell, has withdrawn her music from Swedish audio streaming and media services provider, Spotify. Her withdrawal stands in protest over Spotify’s alleged issue with moderating COVID-19 vaccine misinformation on their platform. The 1997 rock and roll hall of fame inductee made a statement on her website saying, “I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities on this issue”.

This protest comes after Canadian-American singer/songwriter, Neil Young, requested Spotify to take down all his music from the platform. In his letter to Spotify, Young stated that he would not continue to support Spotify’s life-threatening misinformation on the platform. This refers to podcast host Joe Rogan having been accused of spreading false information on his ‘The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast.

Rogan has maintained, via his social media profile on Instagram, that he only wanted to know his guest’s opinion on the matter and that he is only interested in finding out the truth. He admits that he has “corrected things when he gets them wrong”.

As reported by the LA Times, along with Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, American guitarist Nils Lofgren has also pulled his music off Spotify.

In a press release, the CEO of Spotify, Daniel Ek stated that they are working to add a ‘content advisory’ label to any discussion about COVID-19 on the platform. Read his entire statement here.
