Tucson, Arizona’s Americana/indie rock hotshots Calexico make their way to the land down under for a multi-country excursion spanning the entire month of February! Led by musicians Joey Burns and John Convertino, Calexico brings music from their widely praised fourth studio album ‘Feast of Wire,’ (remastered and released in 2023), to Aotearoa for a series of successive gigs next month. February sees the band ignite venues in Wellington, Lyttelton, and Auckland with their indie rock, alternative, country, and indie folk flair.
The New Zealand edition of the tour was announced by Banished Music and Strange News Touring in October 2023, with headlining gigs stationed at Wellington, the Loons in Christchurch on February 10, and the final stop at Auckland on February 11.
Joining Calexico on all three shows in New Zealand is Wellington-based singer-songwriter Ebony Lamb. The folk, jazz, soul, and ambient pop artist released her self-titled debut album in October 2023, followed by a seven-show album release tour in October and November.
“It’s a huge honour and privilege to play all three shows across Aotearoa New Zealand with Calexico, especially on their Feast of Wire Anniversary Tour, they really made a big impression on the alternative indie country folk scene down here with their many albums,” expressed Ebony Lamb to us about her upcoming stint. “Calexico has always been a strong reference point for all of us, creating a bridge from beautiful traditional cultures in an original contemporary way. This will be the first time I’ve seen them live and I’m really excited to perform my new album EBONY LAMB which was produced by Bic Runga & Kody Nielson, to a wider audience. I’ll be playing with a trio in Wellington and as a duo in Christchurch and Auckland. This is a very special way to start out 2024 and I can’t wait to perform and watch Calexico each night.”
In a statement, Joey Burns of Calexico reminisced on the 20th anniversary of Feast of Wire, saying, “When I think of recording ‘Feast of Wire’. I’m reminded of how much time and space we had in the studio to try out all sorts of ideas. Most of the recordings started like they often do with John on drums and myself on guitar. As we brought in the other band members it was like a river was flooding through our subconsciousness and we couldn’t get the ideas to analog tape fast enough.”
