The Mercury Prize has announced its nominees for the 2024 award. Check out the nominations below:
Nia Archives’ ‘Silence is Loud,’ ‘early twenties’ by Cat Burns, and ‘When Will We Land?’ from Barry Can’t Swim, amongst others, are up for the Mercury Prize 2024. Nia’s debut studio album ‘Silence is Loud’ has become the first jungle record to receive a Mercury Prize nod in 25 years. The last person to pick up this win was Roni Size in 1997.
Charli XCX’s sixth studio album ‘Brat,’ too, has been shortlisted for the prize, alongside Grime MC, rapper, and songwriter Ghett’s ‘On Purpose, With Purpose,’ Irish singer-songwriter CMAT’s sophomore record ‘Crazymad, for Me,’ ‘Who Am I’ from Trinidad-born East London-based rapper Berwyn, and corto.alto’s ‘Bad with Names.’
The Mercury Prize nominees also include ‘This Could Be Texas’ by English Teacher, London’s indie rock band The Last Dinner Party’s debut album ‘Prelude to Ecstasy,’ ‘Lives Outgrown’ by Exeter-born singer-songwriter, and ‘Black Rainbows’ – the fourth studio album from singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae.
A panel of industry experts, including The Times’ music critic Will Hodgkinson, Nottingham-born DJ and presenter MistaJam, DJ and Future Bounce label head honcho Jamz Supernova, and Head of Music Radio 2 and 6 at BBC – Jeff Smith, joined forces to decide the nominees. BBC Music is set to announce the winners of the Mercury Prize 2024 in September.
