A slew of videos and images of a cloud of black smoke and flames engulfing the elaborate “World of Orbyz”-themed stage setup went viral online. While pyrotechnics and fireworks could be heard exploding, firefighters and other first responders were also seen at work extinguishing the unhinged flames at the festival ground’s mainstage area.
Although the source of the fire is still unknown, the organizers confirmed via a statement online that no one was injured during the incident and further declared they were focusing efforts on finding solutions for the festival weekend.
The situation appears to be gradually improving, as the organizers further noted they were working through the night on “possible solutions for the Mainstage area” and confirmed “no other parts of the festival venue, stages, or areas were impacted.”
Tomorrowland spokesperson Debby Wilmsen said at a press conference, “Years of love and passion have gone into building that stage. Those teams are devastated. Tomorrow, 38,000 festival-goers will arrive, we’re really looking forward to that, and we’re going to give them a warm welcome. We’re going to make it a wonderful festival.”
“The intention is for the festival to go ahead. But we can’t do magic, so it will be without the main stage. Our production team will now do everything they can to make it truly special,” Debby further remarked.
On July 17, the festival site notified that the DreamVille campsite was open to all visitors. Other Global Journey experiences and activities planned in Antwerp and Brussels will go forward as planned.
“This wasn’t just a stage. It was a living, breathing world. From the very first sketch on a blank page, to countless hours of conceptual design, artistic collaboration, engineering, crafting, building, every single piece of Orbyz carried part of our soul,” the organizers wrote in their website’s update section. More details and information about the festival proceedings concerning the Mainstage are expected soon.
Over 400,000 people are expected to attend the yearly Tomorrowland festival, which began in 2005. Techno powerhouse Charlotte de Witte is penciled in to open and close the Mainstage during the festival’s first weekend (July 19), becoming the first artist to ever play Tomorrowland twice in one day.
Tomorrowland’s website has confirmed that the festival will proceed, subject to tweaks in the stage setups.
