Bandcamp Announces Ban on AI-Generated Music

“We reserve the right to remove any music on suspicion of being AI-generated,” the American online music distribution platform said via a blog post on January 13.

“We reserve the right to remove any music on suspicion of being AI-generated,” the American online music distribution platform said via a blog post on January 13.

As artificial intelligence takes over the content and media spaces in the creative field, Bandcamp Support took to Reddit to share their plans about implementing policies on generative AI. “The fact that Bandcamp is home to such a vibrant community of real people making incredible music is something we want to protect and maintain,” affirmed Bandcamp Support. “Today, in line with that goal, we’re articulating our policy on generative AI. We want musicians to keep making music, and for fans to have confidence that the music they find on Bandcamp was created by humans.”

Bandcamp, founded in 2008, boasts a dedicated fan base that can purchase music, CDs, and merchandise from artists on the platform. Unlike being paid as per streams accumulated on audio streaming platforms, the artist receives a portion of the sales they have made on Bandcamp.

“Musicians are more than mere producers of sound. They are vital members of our communities, our culture, and our social fabric. Bandcamp was built to directly connect artists and their fans, and to make it easy for fans to support artists equitably so that they can keep making music,” the blog post titled ‘Keeping Bandcamp Human’ read.

“As part of their new policies any “music and audio that is generated wholly or in substantial part by AI is not permitted on Bandcamp,” the platform stated. They added that “any use of AI tools to impersonate other artists or styles is strictly prohibited in accordance with our existing policies prohibiting impersonation and intellectual property infringement.”

With this move, Bandcamp makes sure that the platform prioritizes human creativity and that fans and users can stay assured that there are policies in place to take down music or audio made by employing generative AI. Bandcamp users can continue to support musicians and artists who are making music themselves.

“If you encounter music or audio that appears to be made entirely or with heavy reliance on generative AI, please use our reporting tools to flag the content for review by our team. With this policy, we’re putting human creativity first, and we will be sure to communicate any updates to the policy as the rapidly changing generative AI space develops,” Bandcamp said, concluding the blog post.
