Gazing At SafarRang’s Genre-Bending Debut EP, ‘Notes From The Dark’
Delhi-based singer and composer Bhanu Sharma, who releases music under the alias SafarRang, has cast out his first EP ‘Notes From The Dark,’ presenting his brand of Hindustani/alternative fusion music.

Trained in Hindustani vocals and skilled in various musical instruments, genre-fluid artist SafarRang finds his music soaked in Hindustani music and poetry. Via his maiden record ‘Notes from The Dark,’ the artist meticulously attempts to push the boundaries of contemporary Indian music.
This 4-track EP hauls in inspiration from SafarRang’s extensive musical exploits through the years and lengthy musical influences. It is produced by musician Ritwik De, who has performed on the EP, and also features sitar maestro Dhruv Bedi and renowned tabla player Mohit Lal.
Previously released as singles ‘World’ and ‘In Baaton Mein’ open out the EP. Stitched together with dazzling piano segments and gravelly vocals, ‘World’ folds in bellowing shehnai parts and is elevated by SafarRang’s classical singing technique. Captured by Hindi lyrics, ‘In Baaton Mein’ serves as an ode to love and then estrangement. It sees crisp Sitar details by Dhruv Bedi and a medley of sonics from a swarmandal, harmonium, guitar, and drums.
Next up is ‘Drop Fear,’ released in tandem with SafarRang’s first music video. The track delivers a multi-genre feast opening with a country-esque score and drives forward to an upbeat rock and roll tune, smeared by dainty bass segments, strummy guitars, and plucks of the swarmandal.
‘Notes From The Dark’ concludes with ‘Hold On,’ serving as an homage to the early Indian indie rock songs of the noughties. It produces a heavier-sounding ballad, letting loose percussionist Mohit Lal’s prowess on the tabla. A somber arrangement of the harmonium, tabla, and strings shapes the outro.
“Each of the songs is from a completely different universe, and it feels extremely satisfying to have had some of Delhi’s most seasoned musicians feature on the songs that needed them,” says SafarRang via the press release.
Lauding the efforts of the Ghar Ka Studios’ chief, SafarRang further stated, “What Ritwik brought was a unique musical sensitivity, working with him was an extraordinary experience. I think having grown up in Delhi around the same time, and in the music circuit, the collaboration naturally worked well.”
