Neither Do I Shares Debut Album, ‘We’re Not Known For Anything’

Auckland’s alternative/indie act Neither Do I, fronted by musician Danny Ebdale, has released the nine-track debut album, ‘We’re Not Known for Anything,’ sealed with intricate wordplay and crafty analogies.

“This concept is all over this album, but it’s not the only theme – lots of metaphors and fictional wordplay, but about 75% non-fiction if you spend time to unpack it. It’s my most adventurous and mature album yet. It’s my first proper album in 5 years and I’m really proud of it,” expressed Neither Do I in a press statement.

Brewing for four years and meticulously crafted under the care of guitarist/vocalist Martin Phillips, along with guitarist/producer Jonathan Pearce at The Vault in Auckland, Danny’s first album under Neither Do I saw its release on April 17, 2025. The nine tracks delve into a more personal and intimate aspect of Ebdale’s songwriting mastery with a renewed focus on subtlety and nuance.

Prior to the release, Neither Do I dished out two songs from the album ‘Ghost Machine,’ a breezy jangly-pop tune, and ‘Recollection,’ a sprightly bass-fueled rock outing, as appetizers for ‘We’re Not Known for Anything.’

Ebdale said via press note, “‘Ghost Machine’ is about feeling like you are surrounded by people that deliberately don’t quite acknowledge you, especially in the music scene, feeling your work has been under-appreciated. It’s about not letting the big names have the power to discourage you because they have ‘the thing’, and so you navigate by soldiering on, despite these feelings.”

The album’s opening number, ‘King for a Day,’ produces a breezy indie piece tied together with picky string work, while ‘Running in Clay’ straps on a grim alternative score. Sitting next is ‘Cover Your Tracks,’ a rousing indie rock composition with rhythmic guitar lines and frenzied percussive patterns.

It is followed by the title track and highlight of the album, ‘We’re Not Known for Anything,’ a stellar singer-songwriter composition seasoned with melodic synths and soothing key arrangements. ‘Go Away’ takes shape with bright, strummy guitar parts and sees Danny neatly expand on his vocal chops over a raging rock motif. ‘Fresh New Hell’ and the alternative/experimental ballad ‘Lull’ complete with wistful violin sections, close out the album.

Neither Do I further spoke about his concept album, saying, “There are two sides to this coin – keep your self/ego small enough to remain humble, or stay small because that’s how you’ve grown to feel? There’s a fine line between the two. For me, at least. And maybe someone out there.”
