Back in June 2023, a social media post from the virtual band (showing them in a hotel room in Mumbai) sent internet sleuths and Gorillaz fans in India into speculation overdrive. Additional images in the post revealed flight tickets via “Super Fast Airways” from New York to Mumbai, sparking rumors that India could be the next tour destination.

Two years later, the mystery has finally unraveled. The post was a teaser for their ninth studio album, ‘The Mountain,’ set for release on March 20, 2026. The album features a remarkable list of artists, including Bollywood playback icon Asha Bhosle, sarod maestros Amaan Ali and Ayaan Ali Bangash, flautist Ajay Prasaana, Indian American jazz legend Asha Puthi, and British American sitarist Anoushka Shankar.

The project was recorded across Mumbai, New Delhi, Rajasthan, and Varanasi in India, as well as
Ashgabat, Damascus, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York. The 15-track record also includes collaborations with singer Kara Jackson, post-punk outfit Idles, composer Gruff Rhys, DJ Bizarrap, rapper-singer Black Thought, and more. The cover art features the word ‘Parvat,’ meaning mountain, written in Devanagari script, and the album explores themes of enchantment, mysticism, and spirituality.

‘The Mountain’ includes songs performed in five languages, namely Arabic, English, Spanish, and Yoruba, and was played in full at their recent Mystery Show at London’s Copper Box Arena.

Its first single, ‘The Happy Dictator,’ an alternative/indie track featuring American pop duo Sparks, premiered on September 11, 2025. The accompanying visualizer presents the lyrics in both English and Hindi and has amassed over a million views since its release.

In a press release, Gorillaz’s animated drummer Russel Hobbs described the album as, “As space dust we are here forever and that’s a mighty long time. This is a musical meditation infused with light. A journey of the soul, with beats…“
