After revisiting her stack of unfinished scratches and demos, Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Tiana Tara firmly steps into India’s independent music scene with producer/composer Ashwin Raghavan aka Sticky Twiggs for the R&B-influenced ditty, ‘Undeniable.’ The track tackles the woes of enduring an emotionally unavailable relationship, channeled seamlessly against a rhythmic composition. The duo got together to bring life into Tiana’s shelved 2018 demo as they augmented it with Sticky Twiggs’ prolific work on the strings and splashes of synth.
Having met at a music school in 2015 and being friends since then, Tiana and Sticky Twiggs were equally raved to work together on ‘Undeniable.’ “Although we have played many gigs together in the past, I was always looking for the opportunity to collaborate with him creatively on an original track,” prefaced Tiana while talking about her decision to collaborate. “When I made the decision this year to start putting my original work out there, I reached out to Sticky with an old voice note and some chords, to which he responded with so many ideas and the rest is history.” As for Sticky, the non-confrontational nature and openness to change and explore ideas between them are what bolstered the writing and production aspects of ‘Undeniable’ smoothly.
Tiana comes off her hit collaborative single ‘Weatherman’ with fellow independent musicians Perp and Varun Agnihotri. The singer admits to feeling excited and overwhelmed to release her work as she continues to discover her footing with music. “As an independent artist releasing music today, there are so many different hats we have to wear other than that of a creator and songwriter, so navigating that on your own can feel challenging at times, but also such an amazing and rewarding opportunity for learning and growth,” shares Tiana regarding her continuity in music. “It feels like I’m just getting started.”
Similar to Tiana, Sticky Twiggs also embarked on his production journey with a project for Perp and Avyay in 2018 and has since worked with musician friend K/Who. “Every artist is different and I think it’s important to be somewhat comfortable and familiar with the person you’re working with, in order to get the best ideas out of them,” he says, detailing his approach and experience working as a producer. “I try my best to support a vocalist as well as I can, rather than a more flashy in-your-face approach. It’s worked well for me so far and it’s always a fun experience to work with friends or make friends while working.”
For 2024, Sticky sits atop a bevy of gripping work yet to be unleased. He revealed, “Although my personal production work has taken a bit of a back seat, I’ve got some exciting ideas brewing in various stages of completion in my laptop. Inspiration is fleeting, but 2024 might just be the year that the Sticky Twiggs EP comes out!”
Whereas, expect to catch a complete EP from Tiana by early 2024, as well as another collaborative single! The singer-songwriter dabbles in soul, indie pop, and R&B music, with a knack for penning introspective lyrics from her “own experiences of going through life feeling like an oversensitive oddball.” “I hope to connect with my listeners through memorable melodies, relatable themes and lyrics and deliver performances that resonate with them,” confessed Tiana in the excitement of creating and sharing her music.
