Long Distances Shares New EP, ‘How the Mighty Will Fall’

India’s blossoming indie rock band Long Distances marks the new year with two milestone moments in January: the release of their debut EP ‘How the Mighty Will Fall’ and a performance at Lollapalooza’s second edition in Mumbai!

Long Distances, steered by indie stalwarts and seasoned musicians Aarifah Rebello, Zubin Pastakia, and Apurv Agrawal, released their debut EP ‘How the Mighty Will Fall’ on January 19. The five-track record unfurls a sonic tapestry of post-punk, shoegaze, indie rock, dream pop, and synthpop themes. It features the mainstays of India’s music scene, such as Jai Row Kavi, Mali, and Sandunes, with Chinmay Patkar (Corner Cafe Chronicles) sitting on cover art and visual elements. “The EP will take listeners on an emotional journey that explores themes of loss, longing, disappointment, grief, acceptance, and resistance,” says the trio.

‘How the Mighty Will Fall’ sees the band’s prior releases ‘Empire,’ ‘Lovesong for an Apocalypse’ and ‘Delicate Surrender‘ sandwiched between two new tracks, ‘Skin to Sea’ and ‘Bridge.’ The crew states, “To us, these are not songs that exist as an escape but are in dialogue with the world we live in today.”

‘Skin to Sea’ unlocks the EP, a tune described as “an ode to the complicated nature of grief,” cobbled together after a band member mourned the loss of a loved one. Anchored by ambient/shoegaze motifs, the single kicks in with sleek percussions, meandering synth patterns, powerful distorted guitar shards, and elegant vocal arrangements and harmonies courtesy of Aarifah. A captivating outro segment lingers on with you long after the composition concludes.

As the EP concludes with ‘Bridge,’ the triad presents almost four minutes of an assertive synth pop/dreamy-alternative production, drenched with creamy synth designs, gritty rhythms, twitching bass details, and ethereal vocal textures.

Long Distances will commemorate the release of ‘How the Mighty Will Fall’ by opening Lollapalooza 2024 at Mahalaxmi Race Course from 1:30 PM onwards on the Nexa Stage.
