CMAGIC5 Kicks off 2025 With New Single, ‘Happy Never After’

CMAGIC5’s new song serves as the title track for her upcoming 7-track EP and is released along with an Alice in Wonderland-meets-Beetlejuice-themed music video directed by the artist and Andrea Hunter.

After slotting alongside rock legends Simple Plan at a New Year’s Eve showcase in Brampton and taking home the Gussapolooza Award in 2024 for Best Performance, for CMAGIC5, this project signifies yet another milestone moment in her career, pointing to the artist’s new era.

Ahead of the NYE show, the singer-songwriter updated fans and attendees via social media that they would be the first to listen to an unreleased piece from her catalog titled ‘Happy Never After.’ This song was officially released on January 17 and it’s safe to say that the pop-rock space looks to be dominated by CMAGIC5 for the foreseeable future.

Influenced by the likes of fellow Canadian Avril Lavigne, Paramore’s Hayley Williams, Olivia Rodrigo and Guns N’ Roses as a teenager, ‘Happy Never After’ is a welcome addition to artworks that toss out the typical narrative of a fairy tale romance with assertive and unapologetic lyricism exemplifying the repercussions of heartbreak while also offering up a fierce theme of empowerment.

The tune opens with rampant guitar flicks and ominous vocal harmonies, and CMAGIC5’s crisp vocals soon ensue over electric guitar chords. Drifting synth patterns as hard-hitting percussive arrangements surface to produce a bouncy pop-rock/punk-rock rhythm. Its lyrics call out toxic behavior with mentions of “stain on my heart,” “tired of your games you played out” and “You’re a nightmare and a waste of good mascara,” really hammering home the sentiment.

As revealed via a press release, “CMAGIC5 wanted to create a song that reclaims power after heartbreak, turning pain into empowerment. The idea sparked during a late-night writing session where the concept of a modern-day “anti-fairytale” resonated deeply. Drawing from personal experiences and stories of others navigating toxic relationships, the song evolved into a fierce anthem of self-love and strength.”

Its music video from CMAGIC5 and Andrea Hunter sees the artist spiral into an alternate Wonderland. CMAGIC5 plays the role of Alice jousting with the manipulative Mad Hatter, portrayed by Madison Whitworth, who personifies the poisonous charm of unhealthy romance. The video is packed with tons of Easter eggs and small details hidden with its carnival setup.

You’ll find a stuffed White Rabbit, Bill the Lizard’s ladder, the White Queen’s horse, and many more such references. A closer look will also unveil a poster for Stephen King’s Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Bill Skarsgård rendition) placed in the background.
