Club Ruby Packs a Wallop on New Anti-Valentine’s Day Single, ‘Heartbreak Overtime’

Auckland-based indie-rock crew Club Ruby propels their first release of 2025, a thumping Happy Anti-Valentine’s Day garage-rock style composition titled ‘Heartbreak Overtime.’

Fittingly released on February 14, the rebel pop-rock/punk-rock force points to toxic one-sided relationships and challenges with significant others on this outing, playfully sewing in a barrage of spirited and cheeky lyrics.

Led by the effervescent voice of singer President Ruby, ‘Heartbreak Overtime’ also candidly lists frustrations wherein one partner sits in “overtime” attempting to save what is already a damaged and hopeless relationship. Recorded with music producer Christian Tjandrawinata at his home studio, this release is also backed by arts amplifiers NZ On Air Music.

Picking up with crashing drums and President Ruby’s fierce vocals grasping each lyric, edgy electric guitar chords and rumbling bass yanks soon ensue to shape a gritty punk-rock melody. Playful key segments slotted in make way for a feet-tapping joust, while a steamy guitar solo forms the song’s outro.

“We wanted to create a breakup anthem that’s sad, sarcastic, and danceable all at once,” conveyed vocalist Jade a.k.a. President Ruby in a press note. “‘Heartbreak Overtime’ captures the chaos of giving your all to someone who gives nothing back—but with a beat you can mosh to.”

Bassist Hon, who performs under Vice President Hon, also chipped in to express, “Anytime love has felt like working back-to-back double shifts at a thankless full-time job, this one is for you!”
