TFword in Conversation With Sequent

Following Sequent’s release on Yamatai Records’ smashing ‘Genesis’ compilation, we had a chat with her about her tune, her journey, her formative sound, and her plans for the rest of the year.

Hailing from Vienna and taking inspiration from the multitude of sounds she grew up with, Sequent is a DJ and producer who is steadily establishing her reputation for her deep, moody, and techy style of drum & bass.

Since her debut, Sequent has also become a staple of the Austrian drum & bass landscape, with performances across the lengths of the country and in tandem with appearances in the UK, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, & Spain. Sequent is also a part of the female bass music collective named AMI|KAL which she founded together with Aras, Jalen Mess & Sarah Allen in 2020.

With releases on Blu Saphir, Mainframe Recordings, Deep Within Recordings, I.D Bogota Music and PTRNS, Sequent has received support from the likes of Camo & Krooked, DJ Marky, Alibi, Dossa & Locuzzed, HLZ, Arkaik and many more. 

For her latest release, Sequent has made her debut on Yamatai Records on the third edition of the label’s ‘Genesis’ compilation. The 19-track Various Artists album features a plethora of talents who have catered immaculately to Yamatai’s underground schematics; and Sequent has delivered superbly on the memo with ‘Through Your Love.’

With flickers of deep, atmospheric, and razor-sharp drums over the bubbling bass growls, Sequent takes us on a journey through the sounds she has been championing since her debut. We wanted to know more from Sequent about her tune and her quest to find her formative sound; and it was time for a chat.

TFword: We’re absolutely loving the deep and rolling vibes on ‘Through Your Love’. What are your thoughts on how the tune has shaped up?
Sequent: Thank you! It was definitely a journey to make this tune. After a few versions, I finally found the perfect end result and arrangement that made sense for me and also for the listeners. Especially the vocal is the most important thing in this tune, and it took a while to figure out how it would sound best. 

TF: How has it been like working with the Yamatai Records crew?
Sequent: It was really nice and easy to work with the guys from Yamatai, they helped me a lot with feedback for the tune, and just in general, it was a lovely experience. That they believed in my music means a lot to me and they definitely gave me a warm welcome to the label.

TF: Talk us through the creative approach you took on the tune.
Sequent: The vocal is the main character in this tune, for sure, followed by the atmospheric pads, bass stabs and the rolling drums. The general atmosphere of this tune is deep and moody. All in all, I’m really proud and happy with how it all came together. 

TF: How and when did the Sequent journey begin? 
Sequent: It started back in 2019 with my first official gig at a club. After that, I started to producing and released my first collab EP the same year in October. Since then, I released a bunch of tunes on different labels and played my first few shows abroad.

TF: How would you like to define your sound? 
Sequent: It’s a mixture between deep/liquid I would say. I really like to use vocals and piano chords in my projects. That’s how my tunes come to life. 

TF: What are you looking forward to this year with your music? 
Sequent: I’m currently working on the next round of projects, including some more collaborations and solo tunes of course. But let’s see, it’s always a surprise what’s happening next.
