Pranita Nair Pandurangi and Magdalena Este Release Stunning New Micro-EP

Polish jazz aficionado Magdalena Este and Mumbai-based Hindustani classically trained singer Pranita Nair Pandurangi foster a lush soundscape via the two-track live production jazz fusion EP ‘Crossroads,’ accentuated by fascinating instrumental improvisation and vibrant experimental arrangements.

Developed owing to an association that thrived while conducting classes at The True School of Music (TSM), Vijaybhoomi University in Karjat in 2022, the two artisans pleasingly blend Hindustani classical elements with jazz traits on this release. Educators at TSM, namely Shashank Vishwakarma (vocals, guitars), Anand Masrani (bass), Aron Nyiro (drums), and Loic Salaville (guitars), lend their musical prowess to complete this multi-national ensemble.

Singer-songwriter/music composer Pranita endorses the record as “a souvenir to our friendship,” referring to the time spent together and the song structures concocted.

First on the tracklist is ‘Sakhi Shaam Nahi Aaye,’ a traditional monsoon melody in Hindustani classical music, set to the Raag of Chhaya Malhar. In this composition, Pranita’s Hindustani classical vocals are layered over delicate bass plucks, followed by light percussions and guitar chords. Magdalena soon chimes in, singing in Polish and conceiving a wistful aura over melodic key segments as the music crescendos with a back-and-forth vocal segment between the two singers.

Set in Raag Kafi, ‘Rang Ji Na Daro’ follows next, lighting up with an upbeat tempo and lively instrumentation. Carried by Pranita’s emphatic vocal presence, this Hindustani classical meets experimental jazz arrangement is plugged with dazzling drums and guitar solo performances.

Pranita disclosed via the press note, “Magdalena and I were both teaching at The True School of Music in Karjat from July to September 2022. In the short term of three months that Magdalena visited India, we formed a magical bond over music. I would sing songs I had learned in my student days as a Hindustani classical vocalist and Magdalena would harmonize them and write Polish vocal parts to go with them.”

Concerning the EP, she expressed, “It was time for Magdalena to return to Poland, and that’s when we decided to record Crossroads as a souvenir to our friendship, the music we had made together. We decided to involve our friends Loic, Aron, Anand, and Shashank who were also teaching at TSM at the time and the rest is history – as you can hear it in the songs.”
