The usual spectacle of a DJ performing a set for an hour or two at festivals or events as well as in this era when we are consumed by short-form content, there are a select few electronic music heavyweights who take charge of a venue for more than four to six hours. Check out some such artists who showcase their skills relentlessly for longer sets!
Reiner Zonneveld
With his 11-hour 11-minute performance at the debut edition of the Karren Maar festival, Reiner Zonneveld made history! He scooped up the Guinness World Record title for the longest solo electronic music live set. “Karren Maar festival was an extraordinary journey of sound and connection. Playing for 11 hours and 11 minutes allowed me to deep dive into the essence of my music, exploring uncharted territories of emotion and energy. It was a humbling experience to witness the support and energy from the crowd, creating a one-of-a-kind atmosphere. I am grateful for the opportunity to have shared this unforgettable experience with everyone present, as we pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of electronic music,” said the Dutch DJ/producer and Filth on Acid label boss.
Carl Cox
Renowned for his epic 2015 All Night Long birthday set, which ran for seven hours at his [UNVRS] Ibiza residency, Carl Cox isn’t unfamiliar with playing longer sets like these. A decade ago, the Manchester-born house and techno pioneer got behind the decks at Space Ibiza’s Closing Party to deliver a legendary nine-hour marathon DJ set to bid farewell to the club, which shut its doors in 2016. He had been a resident there for fifteen years. Although he is known to play up to four-hour sets, his closing sets can last for more than seven hours!
Hernan Cattaneo and Guy J
Often pushing buttons for five to seven-hour-long progressive sets, both Hernan Cattaneo and Guy J have showcased their skills separately for over four hours. However, the Argentine house DJ frequently plays B2B sets with progressive house, techno and electro producer Guy J. They’ve taken the Stereo Montreal stage for more than ten hours.
John 00 Fleming
John Fleming has already etched his name across electronic music with releases on major labels like Ministry of Sound, but he is also celebrated for playing open-to-close and all-night sets. His extended sets keep attendees dancing for over four hours with music blasting even after the seven-hour mark.
DJ EZ
Speaking of marathon sets, this listicle can’t be complete without DJ EZ. He has solidified his name as one of the finest DJs for playing marathon sets. He has played marathon sets for charity, too, drawing attention towards great causes. The UK Garage titan has done notable 24-hour sets raising money for cancer research (over USD 78,550 / GBP 58,000) and another challenge to play one track after another for the span of a day. Live from Defected HQ for the mental health charity MIND.
“It’s really important to get my body and the mind prepared, so I make sure my diet is as good as it can be, and also that I get enough sleep! Of course it goes without saying my mind is totally zoned in on the music, but these healthy rituals are essential in making sure I can deliver,” he told Defected when asked about his ritual before his twenty-four-hour stream.
