Imagine you’re a music producer. You’ve spent years building a catalog you’re proud of and finally reached the point where you’re mapping out the next phase of your artistic journey. Your debut album is taking shape, the ideas are flowing and everything seems to be moving exactly as it should. Then one day, your car, inside which you’ve kept your laptop and your drives, including all the projects you’re working on, is broken into and stolen. All of it, pffff, just gone.
It’s not hard to imagine what that might do to a producer’s desire to make music again. When you’ve spent years building something and suddenly lose everything you’ve worked on in a matter of minutes, the instinct might be to walk away altogether. The studio can feel pointless. Getting in the studio can feel like reopening a wound. The appetite to make music might simply disappear.
We’ve spent this whole intro saying “imagine if,” but for ATRIP, this was not a thought experiment. It happened just about a year ago, while he was in the final stretch of finishing his album.
The German-Polish DJ and producer has spent the better part of the last few years championing a hybrid sound that takes inspiration from house, tech house, UK garage and some bits of eurodance. He bridged all these sounds and genres by bringing them together with a distinctly nostalgic edge, which he showcased across a string of releases that helped him carve out a space for dance music that nudges nostalgia but sits firmly with the contemporary. It was all moving in the right direction until his laptop and his work were unfortunately stolen.
And we’re not going to sit here and tell you that the incident didn’t faze him. That would be the easy version of this story. In the tidy narrative where something terrible happens, the artist shrugs it off, returns to the studio and emerges stronger than ever. That’s not what happened.
ATRIP was visibly hurt by the loss, something that came through in the posts he shared at the time. And why wouldn’t it? It wasn’t a case of just a device disappearing from the back of a car. It was years of creative work, ideas and potential suddenly becoming inaccessible.
But somewhere in that loss, something else started to take shape. ATRIP went back to the drawing board, reconnected with the reason he wanted to make music in the first place, and allowed himself to explore ideas without carrying the weight of everything he had lost hanging over him. Then, a handful of singles followed, with each offering a glimpse into where his head was at creatively.
And now, as the European and British summer draws to a close, the London-based DJ and producer has announced ‘PLASTERBOY,’ his debut album, arriving December 4 via his own TANZPARTEI label. The album announcement came with a resounding statement which said: “built from what was lost, and everything i found instead.”
It’s a simple statement but goes far deeper when you know the story behind it. Because over the last twelve months, since losing the work that had been building towards his debut album, there’s been a noticeable shift in ATRIP’s already distinctive artistic world. There’s a renewed sense of exploration in his music. ‘PLASTERBOY’ releases on December 4, and we’ve got the first glimpse of the album with ‘pull u right thru.’
The track sits somewhere between euphoric house and UK-leaning club music, but there’s a tenderness to it that makes it powerful. It’s slow in the best sense of the word: yearning, moody, the kind of track that you’d play on a rainy afternoon with a paintbrush in your hand.
There may be more glimpses before release day, or there may not. Either way, once the full album lands, it has the potential to set a blueprint for how emotional and fast-paced dance music can, and should, sound.
