Meera Shares New Four-track EP, ‘Smile-Ability’

Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Meera unfurls new EP ‘Smile-Ability,’ squeezing out two fresh songs while plugging in earlier releases, ’23’ and ‘Mango Milkshake.’

“I never set out to ‘write an EP’ actually! I started writing these songs as just a coping mechanism for myself,” says Meera. Released in early March 2024, Meera’s new four-track EP is produced by Compass Box Studio’s audio engineer Raag Sethi, who also teamed with the artist on her 2019 EP, ‘I’ve Never Been Happier to Be Lost.’ Meera describes her latest record as a collection of songs made to “either make me smile, get myself out of a rut, or make someone smile.”

Previous releases ‘23‘ and ‘Mango Milkshake‘ open the record, followed by ‘Decent People,’ a shining waltz theme packed with bright harmonies, immaculate vocals, and cheery instrumentation. Initially penciled in 2018, this composition served as an emotional outlet for Meera, who says, “I felt like I wasn’t processing my feelings ‘correctly.’ It’s me comparing myself to other people who I felt were dealing with their emotions in a healthy way.”

‘Tear Me Apart,’ a three-minute lively finger-snapping acoustic single, concludes the EP. The song is tidily folded together with chirpy vocals/scatting, upbeat percussions, and stellar guitar and horn segments, while also serving as a tribute to Meera’s younger sister.

In a statement, speaking about the makings of the EP and teaming up with Raag Sethi once again, Meera shared, “In the making of the last EP, we were finding our footing as collaborators, and I was finding my sound. In this one, having worked together consistently, we know each other’s strengths and inclinations, which is why we had a lot of fun. One of us would have an idea and the other would build on it, or we would have the same idea at the same time and it would be an ‘aha’ moment.”
