Ranked among the most sought-after music producers in the Indian music scene right now, the name sudan has been striking all the right notes lately. At TFword, we are familiar with sudan’s prowess as a producer, bassist, and composer through his works with artists Swara, pruthvi, LAVI & Foenix, and his March 2024 single release ‘omg.’
On his eponymous maiden album, Pritpal Sudan, who goes by sudan, wheels in works from musicians BENDI, L’nee Golay, LAVI, Vavae, pruthvi, Rohit Kumar, Nathan Thampy, Adhithya Sivakumar, and Sanket Pahurkar. In addition to writing, recording, and producing this record, sudan also handles mixing and mastering tasks himself.
Previously released singles ‘omg’ and ‘trouble,’ a snappy tune that features singer LAVI, laid the groundwork for this pop-leaning electronic compilation that whips out a vibrant cocktail of textures, sounds, voices, and tones.
Pushing play, a melancholy key composition opens the album, which sees sudan deliver a spoken word over soothing guitar chords. ‘spection’ ensues, seaming together ambient textures and groovy beats, while ‘dreaming’ reels in musician Sidharth Bendi aka BENDI on additional production and co-writing duties. Its sound is tagged with bulky vocals and creamy string arrangements.
‘can you?’ shines with plucky acoustic guitar notes and impeccable fretwork tied together with beating percussions (tabla, drums) and closing with a tone-shifting energetic rhythm. Singer and RJ L’nee lends her vocal prowess to ‘aftermath,’ nestling neatly over a head-swaying melody.
‘weakness,’ the longest track on the album, serves up a medley of themes riddled with punchy bass tugs, guitars, synths, drums, and oscillating textures, driving forward a dance-pop feel towards its conclusion. ‘fool’ starts as a delicate indie pop vibe, morphing into a polished electronica production. It is followed by ‘untitled,’ which sees Vavae (Rohit Kumar) added to writing and production duties. This composition glistens with a teetering rhythm, peppered with traces of chiptune and lush key and horn segments.
‘honest’ blissfully courses through with a somber piano intro spiked with electro flashes, carving out a myriad of sonics, while the album’s concluding track ‘iiiii’ presents a stripped-back piece with soothing key patterns building towards its crescendo.
Speaking about the album via a press statement, sudan shared, “The album was in the works for just over two years but most of the process felt easy considering the whole purpose of the album was to sort of establish my sound as a solo act and I was in no hurry to rush that process.”
He further voiced on social media, “For anyone who’s never released a solo project in their life, this album feels like the coming together of all my ideas, all my experiences over the last ten years of doing music, in fact, some of the ideas on the album are excerpts from a project dating all the way back to 2017. So sure I started calling this project an album two years ago but feels like it’s been in the making for the last ten years.”
sudan’s album launch kicked off at Mumbai’s live music sanctuary, Antisocial, as part of Misfit Inc.’s Not Dead Yet: It’s aLIVE fifth-anniversary celebration on August 8, 2024. Flanked throughout by spirited drummer Sanket Pahurkar and show-stealing keyboardist Nathan Thampy, sudan trotted through a nearly 2-hour set, running through songs from the album as well as his previous collaborative efforts.
In addition to packing the stage with a revolving door of collaborators featured on the record, the ever-buzzing crowd also witnessed appearances from singer-songwriter Anika, ‘twenty-two’ fame pruthvi, bassist and producer Timothy Thampy, singer and frequent collaborator Anoushka Maskey, Tejas and Frizzell D’Souza, who performed her single ‘Drown Away.’ Keeping the music playing between artist swaps and guitar tunings, Nathan Thampy swiftly executed a singalong with attendees, tuned to Elvis Presley’s ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love.’
The gig also saw sudan announce at midnight the release of a new project, a rehashed rendition of ‘can you‘ altered to ‘can you/hai kyu‘ featuring composer and producer Ankur Tiwari, who joined in to perform the song, with sudan echoing from the stage, “I could not have timed this any better.” The night ended with a sparkling performance of ‘iiiii.’
