Bengaluru-based jazz ensemble Derek & The Cats, known for their flavorful mix of instrumental dance music, have released the new single ‘Jonty Patel,’ a title plucked from the nickname of their drummer, Jason Sharat.

The new release by the seven-piece outfit points to their second album being officially in the pipeline. ‘Jonty Patel’ also arrives on the heels of their previous release ‘Diana‘ (with singer-songwriter Frizzell D’souza) and their debut four-track eponymous record, which stood amongst ‘The 15 Best Indian Albums of 2022’ on Rolling Stone India, alongside albums from the likes of Prateek Kuhad, Parekh & Singh, FILM, Divine, etc.

Derek & The Cats – Jonty Patel

Soaked with bright and creamy sax arrangments courtesy of Gautam David, ‘Jonty Patel’ unfolds to temperate work on the keys and goes on to produce an upbeat funk-jazz melody. Recorded live in a one-take at Stained Class Productions located on their home turf, the fusion track bears a splashy three-way joust featuring electronic piano (Derek Mathias), percussions (Joel Rozario), and drums (Jason Sharat), in addition to picky bass details via Vishal Varrier.

‘Jonty Patel’ was released with a music video that catches all the musicians in their elements, opening with a breakdown of the term ‘Jonty’ and intercutting their performance with stills expressing the upcoming ‘Jont’ before each layer of instrumentation.

Its artwork, illustrated by Anushree Dhingra, projects a postal stamp, with an individual sporting a khaki uniform and a peaked cap with a ‘JP’ logo clutching onto a puzzle piece that completes his face, likely referencing the expression – the last piece of the puzzle.
