TF Daily Feed: Italy Has Made Protecting the Environment Part of Its Constitution

Italy passed a law stating the state must safeguard ecosystems and biodiversity. This has been pursued ‘in the interest of future generations’.

The Italian parliament approved a law on making the protection of the environment a part of their constitution. It has been recognized by politicians and environmentalists as a significant step forward for the country. They are also hopeful that such a move will inspire other nations to conduct the same. Under the new law, the country will have the ability to prevent any initiatives that could potentially damage the health and well-being of people, the environment, and animals. Prior to this amendment, article nine of Italian constitution stated: “It safeguards natural landscape and the historical and artistic heritage of the Nation.” 

As covered by EuroNews, Minister of Ecological Transition, Roberto Cingolani said in a statement. “I think it is an epochal day, the achievement allows Italy to have “well-defined rules” for protecting the planet – especially as today’s actions will have consequences on future generations.: In a statement with WWF Italy, Donatella Bianchi, (President of WWF Italy) mentioned, “To give substance to these steps, it is now necessary to define an organic and innovative regulatory system to protect the nature of Italy.”  

The ‘Costituzione della Repubblica Italiana’ was first approved in the year 1947.
