Mellow Releases Folk and Hip-Hop Inspired New Single, ‘Samjhe Na’
Mumbai-based rapper/sound engineer Siddhant Nanda, who goes by Cook It Like Mellow aka Mellow, has dropped an enchanting folk-esque hip-hop single, ‘Samjhe Na.’

Mellow says, “Samjhe Na was motivated by the new age relationships, where people hold on to each other just for the sake of not being alone. The way people fall out of love so quickly and how superficial relationships are in the new age.”
‘Samjhe Na’ begins with haunting piano stabs unhurriedly slipping in recurring pulsing ticking sounds, all laid over a mat of folk meets hip-hop themes. Mellow fires out quick rap bars, while singer and composer Siya Gupta produces a mesmerizing vocal section on the Hindi-worded track. This release preludes Mellow’s upcoming EP ‘Falsafa,’ illustrated in the Devanagari script on the song’s artwork.
In addition to Siya, Nanda has roped in singer/songwriter Apurva Kedia as a lyrical contributor, with production from music producer Prateek Sarkar and mixing and mastering duties from Rahul Uikey. “Working with the team that includes Siya Gupta, Prateek Sarkar, and Rahul Uikey was an amazing experience, all of them are old friends and we vibed on the song instantly,” says Mellow.
The artist heaped praise on collaborator Siya Gupta, who featured on the song, noting, “Siya is an amazing singer, keen to work hard and be with the song completely. It is amazing how she trusted the process and kept giving her input as well to improve on it.”
To better understand ‘Samjhe Na,’ we asked Mellow about the writing and recording process, and he explained that the tune was inspired by a duet of vocal sections, similar to Kendrick Lamar’s ‘We Cry Together.’ He says, “Me and Apurva Kedia wrote the lyrics, we worked out two versions of the song. It was very clear to us that there needed to be a back-and-forth between the guy and the girl. The production was inspired by the Ali Sethi song ‘Left Right’ which is an amazing song.”
Mellow told us that musical inspirations include hip-hop duo Seedhe Maut, beat-maker Sez on the Beat, and rappers Talha Anjum and Prabh Deep. He added to it, explaining, “the amount of depth in their lyrics and their rap style is what inspired me to start rapping. Sez on the Beat is, of course, my favorite producer, I love his sampling and his beats.”
