Worlds Collide as Gabry Ponte and Train Seamlessly Combine on ‘Brokenhearted’

‘Brokenhearted’ sees the Eurovision finalist and three-time Grammy winner swirl a remarkable blend of styles and genres in their debut collaboration.

Dance music savant Gabry Ponte continues to ingeniously enliven his production techniques, pairing his energetic beats with the vocal prowess of pop-rocker Pat Monahan of Train to frame a memorable dance-rock/pop-rock number.

In this alliance, you are warmly welcomed to the best of both artists, who effortlessly unite and complement their musical approaches and techniques.

Kicking off with a gritty string pattern reminiscent of something from Train, Pat’s amiable vocal chops quickly follow, skillfully layered over a throbbing bass groove. The track goes on to spew out coatings of pop-rock, dance-pop, and Italo dance motifs and bears a hooky chorus along with Pat’s free-flowing singing style.

Lyrically, the song is rather bleak and dreary, crying out for answers to the often-echoed question, “What can heal the broken-hearted?” outlined by a backdrop of lonesome nights, excessive drinking, and one too many cigarettes. Trust Gabry Ponte to shake away the despair and fire off a highly energetic dance rhythm, stirred with glowing synths and sparkling electro marks.

Following the release, we got an opportunity to speak with the Italian musician, DJ, and producer, who shed some light on this collaboration with Pat Monahan.

TFword: Quite a clash in sounds and styles, how did this collaboration come to be?
Gabry Ponte: You know, I love pushing boundaries and exploring new sounds. When the opportunity to collaborate came up, I was immediately drawn to it. I like to describe it as a dance-country cross-over.

TF: What was your experience like working with Train (Pat Monahan), and how do you feel about the final product?
Gabry: Working with Pat was insane! His energy is off the charts, and his voice is so iconic. The final product turned out with a very strong identity. There’s a unique vibe that really captures the essence of both our styles.

TF: Going ahead, can we anticipate more such unique collaborations and music releases from you?
Gabry: I’m just gonna say that I’m excited to keep mixing things up!

TF: You are on your way to headline a maximum-capacity San Siro Stadium in Milan. Congratulations on this feat and your incredible journey thus far. How does this upcoming milestone moment make you feel, and what can attendees look forward to at the show? Have you planned anything special that you can share with us?
Gabry: Thank you! Headlining a venue like San Siro is a dream come true. It’s such an iconic place, and just thinking about all the energy we’ll create together gives me goosebumps. I’m counting the days, this is going to be unforgettable!
