Weaved together by Strange News Touring and Banished Music, Peter Cat Recording Co.’s debut in Aotearoa is part of their upcoming Tour of Oceania, with shows chalked in at Melbourne, Sydney, Raglan, Auckland, and Wellington. The band will kick off their standalone gigs at The Yard music cafe and bar in Raglan on January 24, Auckland’s notorious live music hotspot Neck Of The Woods on January 25, and a tour-ending gig on India’s Republic Day on January 26 at Meow, Wellington.
Peter Cat Recording Co.’s first stop of the tour in New Zealand is a trip to the Soundsplash music festival, where they share the card with the likes of UK drum & bass force Delta Heavy, Australian garage rockers The Grogans, Aussie singer/rapper Mallrat, and Kiwi legend Tiki Taane.
The five-piece crew was formed in 2010, fronted by vocalist and guitarist Suryakant Sawhney aka Lifafa, Karan Singh, Dhruv Bhola, Rohit Gupta, and Kartik Sundareshan. It is tricky to pin their music to a solitary genre, as the pack has continually ripened its sound, ranging from gypsy jazz, alternative indie, psychedelic rock, ballroom waltz, and bossa nova.
Promoters Strange News Touring and Banished Music have hit all the right notes in January 2024 so far, first roping in British Pakistani musician, producer, DJ, and broadcaster Nabihah Iqbal and now Peter Cat Recording Co. for shows weeks apart. Coincidentally, Peter Cat Recording Co. and Nabihah Iqbal were both featured on ‘Chalo’ (2020), a compilation album by DJ/producer Jitwam (with his label The Jazz Diaries) and journalist/producer Dhruva Balram.
