The MTV European Music Awards (EMAs) are back with an exciting 2020 edition. Their 26th edition will see award categories for artists from across the world, including global sensations in the main categories.
The awards show opened a Best India Act category in 2012 for the first time. Public voting is said to close on 2nd November, and the 2020 EMAs will air on Vh1 India on 9th November 2020. Last year, under the Best India Act category, hip hop artist Emiway Bantai won the award with his strong fan following, competing with alternative artist Komorebi, Indian rock band Parikrama, India’s most celebrated singer-songwriter Prateek Kuhad, and pop/rap artist Raja Kumari.
For the 2020 edition of the nominations, we have singer-songwriter and playback singer Armaan Malik, India’s most reputed rapper Divine, rap artist Kaam Bhaari, Punjabi artist Prabh Deep, and Kannada rapper Siri with Delhi-based producer Sez on the Beat. Do check out the songs each of these artists were nominated for below here:
This is Armaan Malik’s debut English single ‘Control.’ The 25-year old singer-songwriter owes much of his popularity to playback singing on popular Bollywood songs, but this single is a refreshing, unique track, adding another language to Armaan’s diverse capabilities and versatility.
Currently India’s most famed rapper, Divine released his single Chal Bombay in January. The commercial appeal to the track comes from the Latin-style beat, not to miss out on Divine’s four lines in Konkani, the local language spoken in Goa, and parts of the Konkan coast (western coast of the Indian peninsula). Since Divine is from Goa itself, the song seemed like a pleasant surprise when compared to the usual hip hop music he’d been releasing.
This single by Kaam Bhaari, produced by sibling duo Rākhis (Shikhar Yuvraj Manchanda) and Nuka (Anushka Manchanda), Kaam Bhaari expresses a heart-broken state through this song. The production stands out, creating a new identity for itself instead of the typical trap sound engulfing Indian hip hop today.
The Delhi-based hip hop artist is nominated for his single ‘Chitta’, which did many successful rounds with a lyric video, remix, freestyle dance video, and official animated music video. This hit, produced by Prabh Deep himself, is an amalgamation of his combined influences as an artist over time.
Siri & Sez On The Beat
Siri is one of the strongest female rappers to emerge out of India, and she has been at it for a few years. Her success has pretty much been off work she has done independently and with brands. Her single ‘My Jam’ produced by Sez On The Beat is a showcase of Siri’s well-rounded approach to content, having directed, produced, and edited the video herself too.
