The Veils Release Stunning Video for New Single, ‘The Ladder’

English/Kiwi rock outfit The Veils have cast a light on their impending seventh studio album titled ‘Asphodels’ by releasing a new single ‘The Ladder’ in tandem with a visually captivating music video.

Fronted by singer and songwriter Finn Andrews, The Veils’s newest composition gained inspiration from the works of Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch who, according to Artnews, was known to “create restlessly imaginative works rich in religious symbolism, allegory, and fantastical elements depicted in bustling scenes across expansive compositions.”

On this outing, Finn Andrews’ mellow vocals seamlessly glide over lush piano arrangments, passive drums, rumbling bass plucks, and orchestral string segments (violin, cello, viola), sculpting a grandiose alterative-rock composition. Its music video, filmed at Parihoa on the west coast of Auckland, was directed by filmmaker Tu Neill with cinematography from Ben Montgomery, framing a wide shot of a seaside in a monochrome display moving in symmetry.

Via press release, director Tu Neill explained the concept of the video, stating, “When Finn first sent me the track, I kept thinking about big, beautiful landscape paintings and how many times I’ve looked at that view and how surreal it appears, like a painting. The song has a beautiful simplicity and is really stripped back like much of the album so it felt appropriate to make a video that reflected that pared-back feeling. We joked about how this must be what middle age is like. Less noise, more to the point, and feeling at ease with letting things speak for themselves.”

The Veils – ‘The Ladder’

‘The Ladder’ lays the foundation stone for The Veils’ forthcoming album ‘Asphodels,’ a grayish-white flower associated with the underworld in Greek mythology, and arrives in January 2025. It was recorded live to tape over a period of five days at Roundhead Studios in Auckland in the spring of 2023.

“‘The Ladder’ was initially inspired by the crazed and mystical paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, who often painted ladders as routes to psychological exploration,” conveyed Finn Andrews in a statement to the press. “It’s about the longing to transcend the relentless chaos of our world, I suppose. But don’t let that description get you down, it’s also a jaunty little number.”

The indie/alternative rock band is also set to mark the launch of this new record by darting on a two-month-long tour of Europe and the UK early next year.
