Yelhomie Delivers a Gritty Expression of Truth on New Single, ‘Run It Up’

The unapologetic and unfiltered voice from Imphal in Manipur, Yelhomie ups his rap game and swiftly pops out ‘Run It Up,’ his latest single loaded with rigorous energy and combining fierce lyricism that highlights struggles faced by today’s youth.

After his recent exploits with rapper Moko Koza on ‘2 Sons of the East,’ rapper Thiyam James, who spits conscious rap lyrics under Yelhomie – a moniker derived from ‘Yelhoumee’ in Manipuri denoting Indigenous people – has racked up yet another bold and brazen hip-hop composition.

Released via independent label Naava Records and 59th Street Records, ‘Run It Up’ docks the hardships and frustrations felt by this generation and puts a spotlight on the distrust felt by the youth toward the system. Lyrically, the track wrestles with themes of power figures, societal problems, and unbridled pressures on young people in his hometown. Inspired by the resilience of his people in Manipur during tumultuous times, Yelhomie approached this track as “an unapologetic expression of truth, determination, and solidarity.”

‘Run It Up’ – Yelhomie

Opening with playful yet menacing key arrangments and eerie piano notes, an unnerving and tense beat shapes the foundation onto which Yelhomie blasts his spirited rap verses. Doused in explicit and socio-conscious lyrics, the single soon pivoted to a more drum-beat-ridden production towards its conclusion.

The press release stated, “The songwriting process began with raw reflections on his surroundings, political turmoil, social constraints, and the unbreakable spirit of those who refuse to be sidelined. Yelhomie channeled these emotions into his verses, addressing the influences that hold back the youth and using his own experiences to call for focus and resilience.”
