Consisting of Indian indie music staples and brothers Shashwat Karkare and Sarthak Karkare, St. Cyril have recently added to their catalog of songs their much-awaited ten-track album, ‘Hurt People Hurt People.‘
Feeding die-hard fans of this genre irresistible rock compositions since casting out their debut single ‘Table for Two’ back in 2022, duo St. Cyril persists in positioning themselves as one of the few must-see out-and-out rock bands in the Indian music scene right now.
Their newest offering, ‘Hurt People Hurt People,’ dips into themes of challenging personal and interpersonal dynamics. It also spotlights the actions of those void of self-awareness, avoids accountability, acts callously, and drops the victim card. Five stages of grief—denial, anger, bargaining, sadness, and acceptance—are depicted throughout the album.
The duo also wheels in significant earlier releases ‘Trouble’ (2022) and ‘Bacchic Ways’ (from their 2023 EP ‘The Most Amazing Exhaustion of the Century’) onto this record. “You’ve got so much to offer” tracks first, stitched with toned-down electric guitar licks and waxed synth work presenting a grim rock melody. Orchestral-esque string sequences mixed into the fold neatly bring out the tune’s intense messaging, carried by Sarthak’s mellow vocal display.
The pair shared an informative snippet of its writing process via social media and conveyed, “The idea struck like a bolt of lightning and was recorded the same day. It’s one of our favourite tracks of the album and we’re so proud of how the whole record sounds.”
‘My Therapist Says’ raises the tempo and unleashes an upbeat garage-rock production, laced with roaring drums, flashy guitars, and echos of the lyrics “I’m a victim of the lie” that linger on. In a nice touch, its music video outstretches messages that read “Set Boundaries,” “Express Yourself” and “Take A Stand.”
Next is ‘Everyone Loves To Be Deserved,’ uncoiling with thumping percussions and recurring tinkles, tightly gripped with slick bassy constructs that forge a sick alternative-rock score. ‘I Need You, You Want Me’ shuffles in edgy guitar riffs over a groovy beat, while ‘Do I Know You’ throws down a savory garage rock banquet complete with ferocious guitars and lethal drum action.
‘I Thought Therefore I Was’ slaps on a scrumptious old-school rock/punk ballad in the vein of one of the duo’s influences, Green Day. It is followed by the title track ‘Hurt People Hurt People,’ which opens with an acoustic section and steadily drifts toward a heavier sound. The album closes with ‘Saudade’ or ‘Longing,’ a melancholy piece noted by swift fret movement, acoustic guitar picks, and somber vocal textures.
