DJ Mag’s first fling in the jungles of Mexico arrives this month with South African DJ DESIREE at the helm for Papaya Playa Project’s weekly Saturday Celebration shindig. Headlined by DJ and producer Palesa Desiree Shilabje, this upcoming showcase is locked in for Saturday, February 22, from 3 PM onwards, sizing up an enthralling daylong experience. Presented by DJ Mag, this aural delight is the latest volume of Papaya Playa Project’s The Rise Era series, which limelights electronic music with a focus on soulful and atmospheric sounds. Tickets to DESIREE’s show in Tulum are brought to you by Ticket Fairy.
DJ Mag’s February 2024 cover star and 2023 Future Star winner DESIREE seamlessly slots into this space, constructing a soundscape that cooks up a whirlpool of styles ranging from Afrocentric house, deep house, soul, techno, and West African pop into her sets.
The Johannesburg-born artist released her debut two-track EP ‘Femme Tech‘ in 2022 and has since continued to notch up appearances at major venues and music festivals the world over. In her career thus far, DESIREE has shared billing alongside the likes of Black Coffee, Denis Sulta, duo Adriatique, BLOND:ISH, Miss Monique, Adam Port, and Honey Dijon, to name a few.
Continuing this upward trajectory, post Papaya Playa Project’s Saturday Celebration, the DJ and producer will make her debut at Coachella this year, six years after playing internationally for the first time back in 2019.
Talking about her music and influences, DESIREE conveyed to DJ Mag, “Many different sounds inspire me, especially the more I travel and listen to other DJs. I’m discovering more and more things that I’m incorporating into my sets. But even from the very early stage, like if you listen to my very first mix on SoundCloud, it was always kind of eclectic, and not so heavily Afro-house. I like to mix things up.”
Previous performers at PPP’s The Rise Era include CamelPhat, Petre Inspirescu, Jan Blomqvist, Bob Moses, Milushka, Damian Lazarus, and Mano Le Tough. Supporting artists for DESIREE’s show on February 22 are yet to be announced.
