TFword Spotlight: New Music Releases From Shriya Rao, AYSH, Space Salt and More!

In this list, we dive into a new single from croonish, a predecessor to what looks to be a lethal hip-hop album from Specter, Shriya’s new EP revolving around mental health and more.

Space Salt – ‘Udd Chala!’

On their most recent music release, California duo Space Salt fires out a bouncy pop-rock banger in ‘Ud Chala!’ It talks about breaking away from societal expectations and choosing one’s path in life. The single hangs vibrant synth marks, upbeat percussive patterns, and relatable lyrics that create a danceable, feel-good tune.

The press note reveals that ‘Ud Chala!’ is sculpted for “shedding limitations, questioning the status quo, and finding the courage to live authentically” and to serve as “a rallying cry for those seeking liberation.”

croonish – ‘Ghar’

Lucknow-born and Delhi-based artist croonish follows up his debut outing, ‘Heartache,’ with ‘Ghar,’ expertly putting forward the artist’s vocal mastery and knack as a songwriter. It taps into the bittersweet yearning for solace and the muted struggle of being away from one’s dwelling.

Bright yet melancholic acoustic guitar parts open the single, ladled with the singer’s soothing voice and stretched-out somber string sequences. The resulting acoustic melody builds to its crescendo with wicked percussive strikes and glowing vocal harmonies. A guitar riff molds the outro segment.

The press note stated, “‘Ghar’ is a song about the quiet echoes of nostalgia—those untold, recurring moments that linger in the heart. Here, ‘Ghar’ becomes a metaphor for anything that feels like home, a refuge amid the noise and silence.”

AYSH – ‘GUNAAH’

Bengaluru-based music producer Aiashwarya Asthana, who releases music under the moniker AYSH, continues to build toward his EP trilogy, latching onto “the allure of the unknown” on his latest offering ‘GUNAAH.’ Held by AYSH’s satiny singing, slick R&B style textures, a squeeze of distorted vocals, and a slow-pop tempo, this offering reels in music composer Rahul P, aka Flameboi, on production duties.

‘GUNAAH’ is meant to serve as a caution, according to AYSH, ahead of committing to something loved, only to have regrets later.

Shriya – ‘In a box’ EP

Independent artist Shriya Rao’s newest four-track EP, ‘In a box,’ dips into issues surrounding mental health as well as a mixed bag of personal experiences, placing the limelight on vulnerability, heartbreak, and the toils of steering through young adulthood.

Lead single ‘Her’ etches an R&B-infused piece about heartbreak and betrayal, followed by ‘I’m not alright,’ which assertively displays Shriya’s vocal mastery over a melancholy piano canvas. ‘Are you down’ plates up a lofty alternative R&B score, while the EP closing ‘Dream about it’ packs in an aural treat with the sounds of rain, birds chirping, and sublime vocal harmonies pressed against warm key constructs.

“This EP is my way of connecting with my audience on a deeper level,” Shriya conveyed via press release. “It’s about showing them that they’re not alone in their struggles and that there’s always light at the end of the tunnel.”

Specter – ‘2 RUPEES BEFORE I GO BROKE AF’

Mumbai-based rap artist and one portion of the rugged Frequency Time Space (FTS) collective Specter has unwrapped his new six-track EP, ‘2 RUPEES BEFORE I GO BROKE AF,’ a fiery prelude to his debut solo LP titled “BROKE AF!!!” Laced with furious rap relays and unhinged, free-flowing lyrics, the songs are mended against a blend of old-school and zesty new-age beats.

Racing through a total runtime of about nine minutes, the artist shuffles between slow rap tempos and rapid-fire verses on the EP. Abhijit Nair, best known as Specter, expresses his opinions about certain individuals in the music scene on the track ‘JIMMY McGILL’ and once again references the crime drama series Breaking Bad, as he previously did on ‘ItSaulGoodma‘ in 2023, along with his rap moniker.
