Chandigarh-born and bred music producer AATMA delves into human emotion on his new 10-track album titled ‘Ehsaas,’ which combines his passion for Indian classical and electronic music.
“Electronic music gives me freedom, while classical music gives me soul, and bringing the two together is the language I use to translate emotions that don’t always have words,” shared AATMA through a press note.
In the works for three years, AATMA’s ‘Ehsaas,’ which translates to “feeling” or “realization,” radiates grandeur and delivers a stellar medley of melodic techno, house, desi, folk, and electronica richly distilled with classical tones.
Opening the album is a melodic house number titled ‘Sukoon‘ (Peace), which is twined with uplifting synth layers and echoing classical vocals. AATMA referred to the track as “a slow emotional start that reflects finding peace within yourself.”
‘Subah‘ (Morning) ensues, flowing with a steady, melodic techno groove laced with delicate string parts, reminiscent of a sarod or sitar. According to the artist, Subah “captures the quiet transition between night and day.”
‘Mehfil 89‘ blossoms with hefty basslines and racing orchestral segments, pulsing with a speedy melody akin to the kind that surfaces in an Indian film during a celebratory gathering. It is workshopped together with DJ/producer Fake Tattoos.
Sitting next is another collaborative outing, ‘When I Found Myself,’ featuring producer-composer Manuel Vilar Liffac, where the pair coordinate a shiny duel between sitar plucks and a reflective house beat. ‘The End of Kaliyug‘ (Dark Age) closes out the EP with its immersive sitar-meets-electronica theme.
Talking about his vision behind the album, AATMA conveyed, “‘Ehsaas’ comes from a very personal place for me. It is about noticing emotions we often ignore while chasing things outside of ourselves. Over the years, I have been travelling, playing shows, unlearning, and spending time alone with my thoughts, which made me realize how deeply Indian classical sounds are tied to feeling rather than structure.”
“The response to the tracks released has been deeply encouraging, with listeners across different audiences connecting with the music. This album took nearly three years because I wasn’t chasing a sound but a feeling,” he added.
