About Te Manawa

Te Manawa (Westgate Library & Hub) is Auckland Council’s first fully integrated community hub . Opened in early 2019 (officially 26 March) after years of planning , it combines a public library with council services, meeting rooms, a commercial kitchen, creative studios, a makerspace/recording suite and even a Citizens Advice Bureau. Its name – Te Manawa, meaning “the heart” – was gifted by Ngāti Whātua (Matua Heta Tobin) to reflect its role as the heart of the new Westgate town centre . Architects Warren & Mahoney (with Māori design input by Robin Rawstorne) gave the building a striking “stacked book” façade that literally signals library use . The jury at the 2020 Auckland Architecture Awards praised this confident, light-filled design and sophisticated material palette . Even on overcast days the interior feels bright and welcoming . Te Manawa is purpose-built for community use – a place where West Aucklanders can explore, create and connect. It won awards for public design and sustainability, with solar panels, a living roof and efficient systems earning it a 5 Star Green rating . In short, Te Manawa is much more than a library or council office – it’s a modern community hub designed for future generations .

Events and Programming

Te Manawa hosts a busy schedule of free and low-cost community events for all ages. The library runs regular children’s programs – for example, the “Wriggle & Rhyme” sessions encourage movement and early learning for babies and toddlers , and “Rhymetime” builds language skills through songs and finger-plays for pre-schoolers . There are dedicated spaces for these activities – the imaginative children’s area (called Te Whare Tapere) even has a built-in stage for storytelling and performances . Parents can bring young ones to weekday story hours, craft classes, or school holiday workshops. Active programs include free Tai Chi and yoga classes for seniors and adults , while the creative hub offers occasional technology and music workshops (for example, beginner coding or basic podcasting sessions in the recording studio ). For older adults, there’s the weekly “Good Friends” group – a social morning tea gathering on Tuesdays – and various interest clubs (book clubs, knitting groups, discussion circles) that meet in the publicly-available meeting rooms. Te Manawa’s commercial kitchen is used for cooking demonstrations and the occasional community dinner or food event. The hub also hosts civic programming (rates advice, service bureau talks) and cultural presentations such as language classes or local history talks. Occasionally Te Manawa is a venue for small-scale concerts or exhibitions by local artists. Notably, the grand opening event in April 2019 drew hundreds of locals with live music and tours of the new facility . Through its programming, Te Manawa truly lives up to its Māori name as a community “heart,” offering something every day – from infant rhyme‐time and STEM classes to free music practice spaces and advice sessions – usually at no charge or minimal cost .

Tickets and Booking

Most activities at Te Manawa are free to attend. There is no ticket office or set admission fee for events – regular programs like storytime, classes and group meet-ups are typically listed as free . When an event does require registration, visitors sign up through the Auckland Council website or at the library front desk; any required fees (for special workshops) are usually minimal. For venues to hire – the meeting rooms, function spaces or kitchen – you must book in advance via Auckland Council’s community venues booking system. Council notes that most rooms at Te Manawa can be booked daily from about 6:30 am until 11 pm (Monday through Sunday) . Rates vary by room and duration; popular events (like family parties or community concerts) often book out, so it’s wise to reserve well ahead. In short, walk-ins can freely attend the daily library and public programs, but planned uses (like hiring a function room) require booking through council channels as listed on site .

Seating and Layout

Unlike a theatre, Te Manawa has no assigned seats or fixed auditorium. Instead it features open-plan library zones and flexible function rooms. The ground floor foyer gives way to a main library area with plenty of movable chairs, couches and communal tables. One highlight is the children’s zone (Te Whare Tapere), which contains wooden nooks and an intimate half-stage where kids can sit on the floor cushions or child-size benches while storytime is underway . On upper levels there are quiet reading areas and study carrels, plus small meeting rooms and classrooms with stackable chairs for community groups. For larger events the central lounge can be rearranged with extra chairs or rostra. Acoustics have been professionally designed, so the kids’ music plays do not overwhelm the quiet study areas. Many visitors say the space feels light and airy ; large windows and timber finishes make even the mezzanine levels pleasant. There are no obstructed views at events: since there are no fixed seats, guests are generally free to choose where to sit or stand. For story hours or performances, sitting on the floor mats in front of the stage is common for children, while adults can use nearby chairs. Generally, front-row or center spots in any activity are best (arrive early to secure them for popular sessions). On busy days the seating areas fill up, so arriving 10–15 minutes early is a good strategy. Conversely, very late arrivals may have to stand along the periphery (or find seating in adjacent parts of the library). Overall, the flexible layout and good sightlines mean there are no real “bad” seats – you can usually move about to see from different angles. The main thing is that everything is on one level (with ramps and lift access) so all areas, including the performance stage in the children’s domain, are broadly visible from multiple sides .

Getting There and Parking

Te Manawa’s address is 11 Kohuhu Lane, Westgate (in the suburb of Massey, North West Auckland) . It sits at Te Pūmanawa Square beside the Westgate shopping centre, between Maki Street and Fred Taylor Drive. By car, follow State Highway 16 (Northwestern Motorway) and take the Oteha Valley Road / Westgate exit. From there turn into Westgate’s town centre and follow signs to Kohuhu Lane. Inside, the dedicated library car park is located behind the building (enter off Kohuhu Lane) . There are roughly 50 marked spaces behind Te Manawa, including mobility spots, with time limits of 90 minutes to 3 hours to encourage turnover . A clearly signed 10-minute passenger drop-off zone sits at the front entrance for quick access . Street parking on Kohuhu Lane and Northside Drive is metered (usually 1–2 hour limits) , and the adjacent Westgate Mall offers 3 hours free parking across its lot . An all-day ($5) public lot is also available a block away on Maki Street, which can be handy for longer visits. For public transport, Te Manawa is well connected by Auckland buses. Frequent routes (including the Northwest Express, CityLink and other local services) stop within a few minutes’ walk. For example, the Route 120 and 11T buses serve the Westgate interchange (Fred Taylor Drive) just beside the hub. The nearest train station is Henderson on the Western Line, from which a quick rideshare or transfer to a bus will bring you west. Rideshare drop-off can use the same front drive/drop zone. Once you arrive, the building’s main entrance has a level walkway and automatic doors – there are no stairs to enter . In summary: ample free parking (with time limits), a passenger drop-off lane, and multiple bus routes make Te Manawa easy to reach. Planning tip: on busy days (weekend events, school holidays) the car park can fill, so arriving early or using public transit is wise.

Inside the Venue

Walking into Te Manawa, visitors find a modern, civic atmosphere. A wide foyer leads to a high-ceilinged main library space. To one side is the Council Services area (for rates payments, dog registration, etc.), and beyond that the children’s area, creative zones and reference collections. The layout is open yet intuitively zoned: quiet reading nooks are separated from active areas, and the airy design helps reduce noise carryover. Staff are generally friendly and helpful – you’ll find a staffed information desk if you need directions or library sign-up. Free public Wi-Fi covers the entire building , and there are plenty of electrical outlets near chairs and tables for laptops or device charging. Public computers and self-service printers/photocopiers are available (for a small fee) in the work area . Food and drink: Te Manawa doesn’t have a café counter, but you’re welcome to bring bottled water, coffee or light snacks (many parents tip-toe in with sippy cups for kids). Full meals aren’t usually eaten inside; however, there are tables in the foyer if needed. Right outside, Westgate Square has many cafés and fast-food options for a substantial meal break. Te Manawa does have a commercial kitchen (rentable as part of a function or club hire), but it’s not a public café. The atmosphere feels safe, clean and family-friendly. Visitors typically dress casually. A coat rack is available by the entrance (common practice) since cloak-check is not formalised. Restrooms (including an accessible toilet) are clearly signed on each floor. The building is fully accessible: aside from automatic entry doors and lift access , there are fitted ramps between levels internally, making it easy for wheelchairs or prams. In short, expect a bright, modern space – bring only everyday items (library card if you have one) and enjoy the amenities.

Nearby Amenities

Te Manawa sits at the heart of Westgate’s new town centre, so amenities are plentiful. The Westgate Shopping Centre is directly adjacent – it contains clothing and home stores, a cinema and dozens of restaurants and cafés. (Popular nearby eateries include family-friendly cafés like Boston Café, casual restaurants such as Lone Star Westgate, and fast food and Asian noodle shops.) If you have time before or after your visit, the mall food court and bars are minutes away on foot. For families, there are public play spaces outdoors at Te Pūmanawa Square during the day. Those needing overnight accommodation will find a few motels and inns within a 10-minute drive along State Highway 16, and Henderson’s larger hotel area (near the movie studios) is about 15 minutes east by car. Various bus routes stop at Westgate (on the western corner of the mall) linking to other West Auckland suburbs and to Britomart in the city. Notably, there are free parent/baby parking spaces, bike racks and even electric-car charging points near Te Manawa’s entrance. In short, the venue is in a lively but relaxed commercial hub – arrive early for a pre-show coffee at a nearby café, or linger after for dinner or a shopping run, since everything you need is within a short stroll.

What Makes This Venue Special

Te Manawa’s uniqueness comes from its multifaceted design and community focus. It isn’t just another library; it’s literally built around the idea of community life under one roof. Auckland’s mayor and local board alike have noted that this “jewel” of the Northwest is “more than functional” – a place that “draws you in” and encourages people to linger because of its welcoming architecture . The building’s façade itself is eye-catching: the staggered, cafe-terrace-like volumes suggest a stack of books or the layers of a heart . Inside, many spaces feature custom artistic touches (award-winning artist Robin Rawstorne designed the children’s area as a woodland glade, for example ). Historically, being the first integrated hub of its kind in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) gives Te Manawa cultural significance . It physically represents decades of collaboration between iwi, council and community – evidenced by the Māori room names and the gifted name “Te Manawa” itself . Practically, it’s special too: Auckland suffers from a shortage of modern community centres, so locals appreciate having a top-tier library combined with a recording studio, maker space, theatre-style storytelling stage, meeting rooms and more. As one council official put it, the hub “will serve the community well for a long time,” anchoring the rapid transformation of the area . All these ingredients – innovative architecture, cultural roots, and an all-inclusive program mix – give Te Manawa a warm, vibrant character that both locals and visiting performers love.

Visitor Tips and Information

Te Manawa is open daily, with weekday hours roughly 9am–6pm (extended late Thursdays) and around 9am–6pm on weekends . It’s free to enter – you only need to sign up for a library card if you want to borrow books. (No entry pass is required for events either.) The building is non-smoking (smoking is only permitted outside at designated areas). Pets are not allowed inside (except certified guide dogs). Visitors should watch their belongings (bags and laptops) but no formal security checks are done at the door. For best experience: turn your phone to silent inside, speak softly in reading areas, and give priority to others in shared seating. Check the event schedule in advance – many programs have limited spots, so arrive 5–10 minutes early to grab a good seat. If attending a popular kids event, note that floor cushions are provided, though some parents like to bring a small blanket or cushion for the little ones. Library printing and scanning services cost a few cents per page, so bring coins or a credit card if you need to print documents. Because Te Manawa is inside a commercial area, if a full meal is needed you’ll step outside (nearby cafes are very handy). Finally, plan to spend time: locals often grab a coffee next door before visiting and end up browsing books for hours – the architecture itself is designed to encourage lingering . All in all, wear comfortable shoes, bring what you need (books, kid’s toys, laptop), and enjoy this unique civic space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to buy a ticket to enter Te Manawa?

No. Te Manawa is free to enter and use. It operates like a public library/community center: there is no general admission fee or box office. Most events and programs (storytimes, workshops, exercise classes, etc.) are free or only require a simple registration. When costs are involved (for example, a special workshop), they will be clearly advertised on the Council events page.

How do I purchase tickets for events at Te Manawa?

Most Te Manawa events are free, so no tickets are needed. If an event does have a fee or limited spots, you typically register through the Auckland Council website or the Te Manawa front desk. There is no physical box office on site. Details for upcoming programs (dates, costs, registration links) are available on council event listings. If in doubt, call the library team or drop by for information.

Is there parking available at Te Manawa, and is it free?

Yes. Te Manawa has an onsite car park behind the building with around 50 spaces (including some mobility-access spots) . Parking there is free for 90 minutes to 3 hours, after which you must move or add payment. A 10-minute drop-off zone is right in front for quick access . Nearby Westgate Mall lots offer up to 3 hours free parking, and a public Wilson parking lot (Maki St) charges a small all-day rate. Always check posted signs for time limits.

How can I get to Te Manawa by public transit?

Several Auckland bus routes serve the Westgate area. For example, the NW Express (like Route 111/XR1), CityLink buses (12, 13), and shuttle buses (e.g., Ritchies 120) stop near the Westgate interchange on Fred Taylor Drive – a 3-minute walk from Te Manawa. The nearest train station is Henderson (Western Line); from there a short bus or taxi ride takes you to Westgate. Check the Auckland Transport (AT) website or app for the most up-to-date routes and connections.

What are the best seats or areas inside Te Manawa for events?

Since Te Manawa has open, flexible seating, “best seat” depends on the event type. For children’s storytimes on the stage in Te Whare Tapere, sitting on the floor cushions near the stage is best. Otherwise, any of the movable chairs in the library area work – front row seats in the central space give a clear view. If you arrive early, you can choose a spot on one of the benches or stools facing the event area. There are no bad seats, as the space is designed for high visibility from multiple angles.

Does Te Manawa have reserved or VIP seating for any events?

No. Te Manawa does not have a formal VIP section or reserved seating. Seating is first-come, first-served. All event attendees (unless prior arrangements through a host) use the same general seating areas. For big community events, organizers might reserve a row for performers or sponsors, but this is handled on a case-by-case basis by event coordinators.

Are there any seating areas I should avoid at Te Manawa?

Generally, no area is off-limits, but some spots are quieter or busier. The reference desk area and kids’ corner are usually lively during events, while upstairs or the far corners are calmer. Avoid standing or blocking aisles or entrances. For the most comfortable experience, stake out a chair near the middle of the main lobby or on one of the mezzanine balconies. If you need absolute silence, head to the upper-level study nooks instead of the central hall.

Are there bathrooms and food/drink services inside Te Manawa?

Yes, there are restrooms (including accessible toilets) on each floor. However, there is no café counter; the hub is not set up to sell food. You are welcome to drink water, coffee or snacks at the tables. For meals or larger refreshments, step outside to the neighbouring food outlets. Vending machines are not available, so plan ahead if you need a drink. Remember to respect the “no alcohol” policy indoors.

Is Te Manawa fully wheelchair-accessible?

Yes. The building has level paths at the entrance, automatic doors and a passenger drop-off in front for easy access. Inside, there is an elevator/lift to all floors and ramps within the space. Accessible parking is provided right behind Te Manawa. All public restrooms include an accessible stall. In short, someone using a wheelchair can navigate the entire facility independently .

What items are not allowed at Te Manawa?

As a public facility, Te Manawa follows standard library rules. Prohibited items include alcohol, smoking, illegal substances and dangerous objects (like weapons). Food beyond snacks is discouraged to keep the space clean. Loud music/personal speakers (without headphones) and disruptive behavior are not allowed. Pets are not permitted indoors (except certified service animals). In general, behave respectfully toward others. If unsure about an item or activity, ask staff at the information desk.

Can I take photographs or video inside Te Manawa?

Yes, casual photography (photos or video) for personal use is generally allowed in non-sensitive areas. However, if an event is in progress, it’s polite to ask permission from the presenter or staff, especially if children are involved. For individual patrons, please avoid photographing others without consent. Commercial photography needs prior approval from Auckland Council. In short, there is no blanket ban, but visitors should be courteous and check if unsure.

Does Te Manawa have free Wi-Fi and charging stations?

Yes. Free public Wi-Fi is available throughout Te Manawa . There are many power outlets near tables and seating areas. You’ll also find public computers to use (for basic internet, researching or printing) . Just bring your laptop or device and log onto the network (it may require a quick signup). This makes Te Manawa a popular spot for quiet work or study between events.

Is there a dress code for visiting Te Manawa?

No formal dress code. Visitors tend to dress casually. Since it’s a family-friendly public building, clothes should be appropriate for all ages. Footwear is required at all times. Basically, dress comfortably–e.g. the way you’d at a mall or library. If you plan to use workshop spaces, you might wear practical attire, but again nothing strict is enforced.

Who can use the community rooms, and how do I book one?

Community rooms (meeting rooms, function hall, kitchen) are available for hire by anyone (individuals, groups or organisations). To book, contact the Auckland Council venue-hire service – they can schedule and provide rates. As noted above, meeting rooms can be reserved from early morning until late in the evening . Confirm with the council if you need any equipment (projector, microphone). There’s often a refundable key/card deposit if you’re the last one out. Make reservations well in advance, especially for weekends or public holidays.

What is the Maori meaning of “Te Manawa” and why is it named that?

“Te Manawa” translates as “the heart” in Māori. Local iwi (Ngāti Whātua, Ngā Maunga Whakahii o Kaipara) gifted this name to the facility. It was intentionally chosen to symbolize that the new community hub is the heart of the Westgate town centre – a central gathering place for vital services and culture . Even the adjacent square is named Te Pumanawa (the beating heart), linking the library building and plaza as complementary “heart” spaces.

Does Te Manawa have a built-in performance stage or auditorium?

There is no large formal auditorium, but there are staged areas. The primary stage is in the children’s section (Te Whare Tapere) for storytelling and kids’ performances . Other meeting rooms have moveable chairs and can be rearranged like a mini-auditorium or flat-floor theatre if needed. If you need a dedicated performance setup, you can book the largest function room and set up chairs/PA as required. Some community groups also use the foyer or library spaces for musical practice (the architects designed the glass partitions to manage sound between rooms) .

Is Te Manawa located indoors or does it have outdoor seating areas?

Te Manawa is entirely indoors; it’s an enclosed, climate-controlled facility. There is no outdoor amphitheater or patio seating attached. However, it opens onto Te Pūmanawa Square, where people can sit on grass or benches outside once the doors are open. All official events and gatherings at Te Manawa are held inside the building. For outdoor play or picnics, visitors use the adjoining plaza on nice days, but the library itself has no external seating.
