About The LaLiT Ashok Bangalore
The LaLiT Ashok Bangalore is a landmark five-star hotel and event venue in the High Grounds area of Bengaluru, overlooking an 18-hole golf course . Opened in the 1970s (Cvent notes it was built in 1976 ), it sits on about 10 acres of manicured lawns and gardens. The hotel blends modern amenities with hues of Indian history – its name “Ashok” honors Emperor Ashoka (a choice first made by Prime Minister Nehru for the country’s original Ashok Hotel) . In fact, the Ashok Bangalore was one of the country’s earliest luxury hotels: initially government-run by ITDC, it was leased in 2001 to Bharat Hotels (now The Lalit group) . As a result, it retains many heritage touches and has been called “one of the finest hotels in Bengaluru” . The property’s sprawling lawns even include the Gandhi Smarak – a memorial pavilion where Mahatma Gandhi held prayer meetings in Bangalore – reflecting its unique place in local history. Today the Lalit Ashok hosts diplomats, business travelers and celebrities alike; it offers 186 guest rooms along with extensive conference and banquet facilities (about 27,157 sq. ft. total) . It was also the first hotel in South India certified to the ISO 22000 food-safety standard , underscoring its reputation for quality. All in all, The Lalit Ashok is a heritage venue that still drives Bangalore’s high-end hospitality and social scene .
Events and Programming
The Lalit Ashok Bangalore is primarily a venue for conferences, weddings and social galas, but it also hosts a variety of entertainment events and performances. Its 55,000 sq. ft. of indoor event space – including large halls like the Kalinga banquet hall and Grand Ballroom – regularly stages corporate conferences, industry expos and charity exhibitions. For example, it was chosen as the venue for the Bangalore INDIA BIO conference in 2016 . Trade fairs and product launches often pack the ballroom and meeting rooms. The extensive Sunny 15,000 sq.ft. outdoor lawn is frequently used for weddings, garden parties and large receptions when weather allows. In addition to business events, the hotel’s nightlife venues have live entertainment. Sutra – The Lounge (a lobby-level bar) “is perfectly in tune with the vibrant rhythms of the Bangalore nightlife” , featuring creative cocktails, a dance floor and regular DJ or live-music nights on weekends. The rooftop KittyKo bar similarly offers themed party nights (Bollywood dance nights, ladies’ nights, etc.) after dusk. The hotel also runs family-friendly events: for instance, its weekend Sunday brunch (at the 24/7 Restaurant) is known for a lavish buffet and even a pet-friendly atmosphere. In late 2021 the brunch menu spanned Indian, Chinese and European dishes and cost about ₹1,550 per person (soft-drink package) or ₹3,500 with alcoholic beverages .
Occasional concerts and cultural performances are held here too. For example, the Dutch progressive metal band Textures played at The Lalit Ashok in Bengaluru in September 2025 . Classical music recitals and dance performances have been booked in the Grand Ballroom, and Bollywood tribute shows occasionally appear in the banquet halls. In short, visitors can expect a mix: by day (or weekday) the venue buzzes with business conventions and training seminars, and in the evenings it can transform into a party spot. If you’re planning to attend a concert or show, keep an eye on local event listings (major events use ticketing platforms or box-office sales) as the schedule is constantly changing. Ticket prices vary widely – from free community events to several thousand rupees for headline concerts – reflecting the diversity of programming.
Tickets and Booking
The LaLiT Ashok Bangalore itself does not sell tickets for public events directly through a traditional box office. Instead, tickets for concerts, conferences or special events here are typically sold via online platforms, corporate registration portals or at the door. For music and club nights (e.g. Sutra party nights), tickets may be booked on event websites or apps. Wedding banquets and private conferences usually require advance RSVP through event organizers. For the hotel’s dining venues, reservations are recommended; the Sutra lounge page even lists a table-booking phone number . Generally speaking, popular shows can sell out, so it’s wise to book early. Ticket prices are event-specific – a recent Sunday brunch was ₹1,550/person (soft drinks) or ₹3,500 with alcohol – while concerts can range from a few hundred rupees to over ₹2,000 depending on the performers. Keep an eye on local listings (news sites or event finder apps) for presale announcements, and factor in extra travel time in Bangalore traffic when planning your arrival.
Seating and Layout
The LaLiT Ashok’s event spaces offer a range of seating configurations to suit different needs. Its largest hall, the Kalinga Hall, is a 10,800+ sq. ft. pillar-less ballroom that can accommodate over 1,000 people (many hundreds seated) for conferences or exhibitions . The Grand Ballroom seats about 350 in theatre-style (auditorium) layout, or 150 at banquet tables, and can fit up to 400 in a standing cocktail reception format . Other mid-size halls (Chanakya, Magadh, Siddhartha, etc.) hold a few hundred each, while smaller boardrooms and meeting rooms fit dozens. The on-site 500-seat auditorium (often used for cultural shows or large meetings) has fixed auditorium seating; middle-center rows offer the best sightlines and acoustics in that hall. For ballroom events, the front rows near the stage are generally preferred for visibility, or back rows for a quieter ambience. VIP or reserved seating is typically arranged by event planners. Most areas have U-shaped, classroom or banquet table setups on request, as well as open dance floors for reception. In general, visitors should avoid severe side angles or far corners in large halls where acoustics may dim; aim for centered seats if it’s a podium talk or a performance. The venue is modernly designed, so sightlines are good and there are few obstructed views. (For example, the Grand Ballroom is reported to be air-conditioned with no pillars interrupting the space.) For any wheelchair or special needs seating, contact the venue in advance – the hotel provides accessible seating (see below) and can hold spaces by the aisles.
Getting There and Parking
The Lalit Ashok is located on Kumara Krupa Road in High Grounds (Sheshadripuram), Bengaluru – literally opposite the Bangalore Golf Club . This is in the city center near Race Course Road and Sankey Road. If you are coming by metro, the nearest stations are Mahatma Gandhi Road (Green Line) about 1–1.5 km away, or Cubbon Park (Purple Line) roughly 1.2 km distant. From either station it’s a short auto-rickshaw or taxi ride south on Sankey Road. Several bus routes serve the area; for example BMTC buses 282A, 284E/H, 285MA and 402B all stop on nearby Race Course Road . Bengaluru City Railway Station (Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna station at Majestic) is only about 3 km away – a taxi ride of 15–20 minutes depending on traffic. Bangalore’s international airport is around 30 km south (a 40–60 minute drive) , so allow earier travel in peak hours.
For those driving to the venue, The Lalit Ashok has its own parking facilities. According to hotel information, it offers a hotel-owned car park and complimentary parking for guests and visitors . Valet service is typically available at the main entrance. During large events or weddings, the parking lots can fill up, but the hotel’s grounds are expansive (4 hectares) . If the lot is full, nearby side streets on Sankey or Palace Road often have paid parking. Rideshare services (Uber, Ola, or auto-rickshaws) also serve the area well; they can drop off at the main lobby entrance or outside Sutra Lounge. Note that Race Course Road can be congested in the evening, so plan extra time. The closest taxi stands are usually near MG Road and Cubbon Park areas, just a short walk or auto ride away. Finally, the entrance to the venue’s main gate is easily found by looking for the Lalit signage on Kumara Krupa Road opposite the golf course .
Inside the Venue
Upon arrival, you’ll pass through a security screening typical of large hotels (loyal guests mention bag checks for large events). Inside, the Lalit Ashok greets guests with a grand, open lobby featuring polished floors and high ceilings. Friendly staff at the reception and concierge stand by to assist with directions or services. The venue’s décor mixes colonial-era charm with contemporary Indian luxury – you might notice curved archways, ornate light fixtures, and Indo-balinese motifs reflecting its history . The indoor atmosphere is relaxed but upscale: think soft lighting, comfortable lounge seating near the bars, and subtle plant or water features that capitalize on the garden surroundings. The hotel’s ballroom pre-function areas and Sutra bar are popular meeting spots before shows: Sutra itself opens onto a lively lounge and dance floor . Restrooms are clean and well-maintained on every floor and near each event space. High-speed Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel (complimentary for guests) , and there are power outlets in waiting areas and meeting halls for charging devices.
Food and drink service inside is excellent. The Lalit Ashok contains several restaurants and bars, so you’ll find everything from casual snacks to fine dining without leaving the premises. For example, the 24/7 Restaurant (by the pool) serves all-day multi-cuisine fare , and “Baluchi – a Pan Indian Destination” offers eclectic Indian dishes . There’s a rooftop Pan-Asian kitchen called OKO , and an alfresco garden restaurant for leisurely meals . The Sutra Lounge and KittyKo bar (both on lobby or rooftop levels) provide cocktails and light bites late into the night . If you attend an event, there will usually be refreshing drinks and snacks available at the bar counters or banquet service. The hotel even provides an onsite gift shop and 24-hour room service , in case you need last-minute refreshments or souvenirs. In short, you can expect a polished, comfortable interior with plenty of dining options, attentive staff, and the ambience of a top-tier city hotel.
Nearby Amenities
The Lalit Ashok sits in a culturally vibrant part of Bangalore. Within a short walk or drive, you’ll find plenty of amenities and attractions. For dining, the hotel’s own restaurants (24/7 Restaurant, Baluchi, etc.) cover most cravings. Just a few blocks away on MG Road and Church Street there are dozens of cafes, brewpubs and eateries: think local favorites like an Indian Coffee House or upscale options in nearby malls. Within 1–2 km of the hotel are notable restaurants (for example, some guests mention rooftop bars and multi-cuisine kitchens in high-rise hotels like Taj West End or Sheraton, which are landmark venues). If you need a quick snack or shopping, several Starbucks, fast-food outlets and gift shops line the busy roads of MG Road. For guests looking to extend their stay, luxury hotels such as the JW Marriott and Taj West End are within a mile of the Lalit Ashok, as are mid-range options like the Lemon Tree Premier and boutique inns near Cubbon Park. Public transit is easy – the MG Road Metro station is nearby for city sightseeing. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are plentiful at any hour. If your event runs late, note that the immediate neighborhood gets quiet after midnight, but ride-sharing apps can still summon cars for return trips. In summary, the venue’s location offers both the convenience of central Bangalore and the serenity of a leafy diplomatic enclave – so pre- or post-show you have a range of restaurants, bars, and hotels at hand.
What Makes This Venue Special
The LaLiT Ashok is cherished for more than just its facilities. It has a storied place in Bangalore’s culture. Its vast tree-lined grounds and palace-like architecture harken back to a different era, giving visitors a feeling of grandeur. Few city hotels have their own on-site monument (in this case the Gandhi Smarak where Gandhi himself prayed) . This historic pedigree adds character: for instance, it was once partially owned by Indian nobility (15 former princely-state rulers reportedly held its original shares ). That legacy is visible in subtleties like the menu choices and décor. Moreover, it stands at the heart of Bengaluru’s old “Diplomatic Enclave”, even sharing a wall with the Chief Minister’s residence and overlooking the iconic golf course, so its location is both prestigious and tranquil . The Lalit Ashok uniquely straddles business and leisure: daytimes see executives and politicians, while evenings it becomes a social hotspot for Bollywood parties and live music. Longtime Bangaloreans recall it as the site of many landmark events – from Independence Day banquets to film industry gatherings – which newer venues can only envy. Even its restaurants celebrate India’s diversity; Travel media notes the hotel’s patriotic Independence Day buffet that showcased regional dishes from across the country . In short, artists and audiences love it because it feels like a miniature festival all on its own – a slice of Indian heritage wrapped in 5-star luxury . It’s the kind of place that makes an occasion feel grand, not just a night out.
Visitor Tips and Information
Accessibility: The venue is wheelchair-friendly. There are ramps and an elevator to all major floors, and wheelchair-accessible bathrooms and parking. In fact, the hotel offers free wheelchairs and has meeting rooms adapted for the physically challenged . Just ask the reception desk if you need assistance.
What to Bring/Not Bring: Always carry a valid photo ID (passport or driver’s license) – the hotel and events often require ID check at check-in or entry. Outside food and beverages are not allowed, so leave snacks and drinks outside. Cameras and phones are usually fine, but during performances you may be asked not to use flash photography or record video. For outdoor functions, bring an umbrella or swatter during monsoon season. If attending a dance club or concert, wear comfortable shoes (you may need to stand or move around).
Age Restrictions & Dress Code: Dress is generally smart-casual. Because the hotel is upscale, avoid overly casual attire like beachwear or torn jeans in restaurants and ballrooms. Some venues have age rules: for example, the Sutra lounge bar enforces a minimum age (21+) during late-night hours. Family-friendly events (like Sunday brunch) welcome all ages – children’s meals are usually available . If in doubt, check the specific event’s guidelines (often posted on the ticket info).
Arrival and Traffic: Bangalore traffic can be heavy especially during rush hours. Aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before showtime. The hotel’s main entrance guards will open gates promptly at doors. If it’s a big concert, queue up in advance of opening to find good seats. Latecomers are sometimes asked to wait until intermission. For late-night departures, it’s safest to pre-book a taxi or use a rideshare app – direct public transit options (buses/metro) may be infrequent after dark in this part of town.
Facilities: Restrooms are located just outside each hall and are well-indicated by signs. There is an onsite cloakroom (coat check) at major events. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel ; you can ask the reception for the login details. The hotel is very security-conscious, so expect a quick bag search at the entrance or lobby. There is a small shop/boutique in the lobby for any essentials. Also note the border of the venue: the Gandhi Smarak pavilion or pool area are public parts of the complex – feel free to walk around them for photo-ops before or after your event.
Common Mistakes: Visitors sometimes forget that the Lalit Ashok is not on a main road – its entrance is on a quiet stretch of Kumara Krupa Road, so look for the big Lalit sign by the golf course. It’s easy to overshoot if you’re not using GPS. Also, don’t underestimate how long it takes to park and walk to the ballroom (the estate is large). Finally, note that some events may be split between indoor and outdoor spaces; always check with your ticket or invite if you’re supposed to switch halls at any point.

Yes – the hotel provides free wireless Internet access in public areas and guest rooms. High-speed Wi-Fi is complimentary for all guests . (One notable exception: certain weekend brunches at the 24/7 restaurant were pet-friendly, as advertised , but that is rare. In dining areas and halls we advise leaving pets at home.)
What items are prohibited inside the venue?
As a hotel and event venue, it enforces standard safety rules: no outside food or alcohol is allowed in function areas, no large coolers or open flames, etc. Alcoholic beverages must be purchased from the venue’s bars if you want to drink. Weapons and sharp objects are of course banned. Videography or professional photo gear may be restricted at some shows (check event rules). Coffee shops near the lobby may not have storage, but the main concierge desk is your go-to for any temporary storage needs.
