### About Inshes Primary School

Inshes Primary School is a modern state-run primary school in the growing West Inshes suburb of Inverness. It first opened its doors in August 2007 to serve the booming local housing developments . An official opening ceremony (with a plaque by Provost Gray) marked the unveiling of the new school building in mid-2009, almost two years after it began operating . From day one the school has been described as a “flagship” Highland school with innovative teaching and strong community involvement . Indeed, in 2009 it became the largest primary school in the Highlands with a roll projected to exceed 400 pupils (plus nursery) . The building itself is state-of-the-art and designed for 21st-century learning. It includes 15 bright classrooms plus two nursery rooms, specialist spaces for children with extra learning needs, and a multi-agency meeting room. Unusually for a primary school, the reception-area hosts a combined school/public library which is open to the local community every afternoon and evening . Sports facilities are a particular highlight: there’s a full-size football pitch and a sports hall complete with bleacher seating for spectators . Meeting rooms and the foyer can be used for exhibitions or local group gatherings. Inshes Primary prides itself on a warm inclusive atmosphere. The school motto is the “Inshes TEAM” – Together Everyone Achieves More – reflecting the sense of shared purpose and community spirit . Parents and locals note that the pupils quickly develop a strong sense of belonging and cooperation. One parent representative described the environment as “fun, happy and safe” where “staff go the extra mile” to build confidence in every child . This caring ethos, along with its high-tech classrooms and ample facilities, makes Inshes Primary School a notable landmark in Inverness’s educational scene.

### Events and Programming

As a working primary school, Inshes hosts many family-friendly events each term. Regular occasions include school assemblies, nativity and wartime remembrance performances, music concerts, sports days and seasonal fairs – often organized by the Parent Council or community groups. For example, each December the school choir and musicians participate in a city-wide press-sponsored Christmas concert; in 2023 Inshes pupils performed festive numbers (like “Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer”) at the Kingsmills Hotel as part of the Press & Journal’s Christmas Concert series . Kids also rehearse seasonal concerts (Halloween, Carol singing, etc.) for their fellow students and families. Beyond school-founded events, Inshes Primary’s facilities are used by community organisations. The sports hall often hosts after-school sports clubs and holiday activity camps run by local providers. Every school holiday, companies organize “holiday camps” (e.g. summer, October and Easter camps) on-site featuring sports, games and crafts for kids aged 6+ (these are ticketed events sold online and typically fill up fast). Weekly community classes (dance, martial arts, etc.) sometimes rent the gym or meeting spaces. The public library inside the school also schedules book-led events like reading groups and craft evenings open to people of all ages – evenings when the school building feels like a true community centre . Major one-off events at Inshes Primary are rare since it is mainly an educational venue. However, the multi-purpose design means it can accommodate exhibitions, council meetings, or even emergency use (as needed by Highland Council plans). The foyer and library spaces have been used for arts displays and parent information evenings. In general, most activity at Inshes is education-based or community-oriented rather than commercial: visitors should expect a friendly school atmosphere more than a live-entertainment venue.

### Tickets and Booking

Inshes Primary School does not operate a public ticketing system like a theatre or concert hall. Most events are free to attend and are for pupils and invited family members. School plays, concerts and open days do not sell tickets; rather, parents and those on the school roll receive invitations or permission slips in advance. There is no “box office” – entry to functions is generally by invitation or simple check-in at the door. For the holiday clubs and sports camps held at the school, bookings are managed by the organising company (often online via event pages or through local community sport providers). These camps advertise ages, dates and fees, and require registration ahead of time (they are not run by the school itself). Interested parents should watch local press announcements or community boards in May/June for summer camps (and in October/December for autumn/winter camps). Some clubs may post on local Facebook groups or on 3rd-party event sites. Note that popular camps do tend to sell out, so parents plan to book as soon as dates are released. In short, ordinary school activities at Inshes don’t require admission purchase – just being part of the community or class. Community library events are also free and open to the public (no reservations needed, just drop in during the open hours ). If an unusual fundraising gala or concert were ever held, details would be announced on the club or Parent Council website – but to date most gatherings are open or by invite, not ticketed.

### Seating and Layout

Inshes Primary’s layout is that of a modern school campus rather than a theatre, so visitors should adjust expectations accordingly. There is no fixed tiered auditorium with numbered seats. Instead, events take place in multipurpose areas: the main hall/gym, the playground, or occasionally the sports hall. For example, a school Christmas show might be held in the large community hall with fold-out chairs arranged for parents, while the sports hall has fixed bleacher benches along one side for indoor sports or performances . For indoor shows or assemblies, row seating is typically set up on the hall floor. Early arrivers (parents or guests) often secure the front rows of chairs; there is usually no reserved seating or VIP area. The bleacher seating in the sports hall is best for seeing court games or gymnastics; it is elevated, giving a good view of the action, but relatively far from performers. The hall itself has a high ceiling and side windows, so acoustics can be echoey if loud sounds (drums/PA systems) are used; microphone systems are sparingly employed for large gatherings. As this is a working school, visitors should be aware that some areas are not open to the public. The main entrance opens into a secured reception foyer; from there you may be directed or buzzed in to specific rooms for events. If a school play is being performed, expect a simple stage area (often just a curtained-off corner of the hall) and seating on the flat floor. There are usually no balconies or slope; sightlines near the edges of the hall may be obstructed by pillars or doors. In short: there are no bad seats in the sense of a row 25 in a theatre – rather, arriving early to find a comfy chair close to the event area is the best strategy.

### Getting There and Parking

Inshes Primary School is located at \*\*Inshes Road, Inverness IV2 3RF\*\* . It lies about 2.4 miles (approx 4 km) east of Inverness city centre – roughly a 5-minute drive or 15–20 minute bus ride. (For reference, a taxi from the city centre takes only about 5–6 minutes , though fares run £8–£11.) It sits near the junction of Inshes Road with Wester Inshes Way in the suburb of Inshes (just south of the Inshes Retail Park and opposite Bannatynes Health Club). \*\*By car:\*\* Access is via Inshes Road off the A96. GPS users should use postcode IV2 3RF. On-site parking at the school itself is very limited and mainly reserved for staff. For visitors, the best option is to use the nearby Inshes Retail Park car park: this large free car park (Tesco Extra, Boots, etc.) is literally across the road . A short walk from there (via a crossing near the pub) brings you to the school’s main entrance. Alternatively, small side streets in Inshes (like Eagle Crescent) may offer on-street parking, but check for permit signs as restrictions apply on weekdays. On busy days (drop-off/pick-up times or major events) expect the school-area to be busy and consider arriving early. \*\*Public transport:\*\* Stagecoach buses serve Inshes. Notably, route \*\*5C\*\* runs between Inverness city centre and Westhill campus, stopping directly at “\*Inshes Primary School (at)\*” on the school’s side and “\*(opp)\*” on the other side . If coming from the city centre (e.g. near Queensgate or Falcon Square), take the 5C towards Milton of Leys/Shopping Park and alight at the Inshes Primary stop. The reverse 5C route (from Westhill or shopping park) also stops at the school. Buses run roughly every 30 minutes on weekdays. Other local routes (5A, 5B and 2A) pass through Inshes Retail Park nearby, then require a 3–5 minute walk (or the short stroll along Wester Inshes Way) to reach the school. Check Stagecoach Inverness timetables for the latest schedules. (The Caledonian Sleeper and ScotRail trains go to Inverness station in town; from there you’d need a bus or taxi.) \*\*Walking/cycling:\*\* If you’re coming from nearby areas of Inshes or Milton of Leys, safe pedestrian paths and cycle lanes lead to the school. Westhill Cycle Path on Kennedy Way is particularly convenient. From Inverness Retail & Business Park (Raigmore area, ~1 mile away), it’s roughly a 20-minute walk via Eagles Road or Loch Duntelchaig Road. Rideshare drop-offs are straightforward on the quiet Inshes Road near the main gate. Always allow a few extra minutes for traffic during the morning/afternoon commute.

### Inside the Venue

Entering Inshes Primary, visitors typically arrive at the main reception area. Outside of class times, a staff member usually greets guests; you may be asked to sign in and wear a visitor badge (for security, as around all schools). The decor inside reflects a children’s environment: artwork, class displays and school values line the corridors and foyer. The hallway and lobby are often bright and colourful, giving a welcoming first impression. Expect a very casual, relaxed atmosphere – shoes may be wall-marked rather than highly polished, many kids’ coats and wellies in racks, and a general hustle of kids at playtimes. If attending an event (evening concert or parents’ meeting), entry is often through the front entrance with doors propped open on those occasions. Security checks aren’t heavy: bags aren’t usually searched (it’s a small school with friendly staff), but you should not bring alcohol or anything inappropriate. Photography of school interiors is restricted; many parents record public performances, but photographing random pupils in halls would not be permitted without permission. The school has CCTV in corridors for safety, and all external doors lock during class time – so allow extra time on a busy day if gates are closed. The school has basic amenities for visitors: ample seating or benches at break areas outside classes, drinking water fountains in corridors, and clear signage to toilet blocks (there are separate boys’/girls’ toilets on each floor and accessible toilets off the foyer). There are no public food stalls or cafés on site; if you’re at a long event, you might bring a bottle of water or a small snack. During school hours you will smell school lunches and snack bars (the cafeteria is for pupils only), but outside of lunchtime the building is quiet and mostly free of noise (except perhaps the buzz of an ongoing assembly or music rehearsal). On event evenings the gym or hall may have small tables with refreshments (cup of tea and biscuits provided by the PTA, for instance), but this is entirely event-dependent. There is no cloakroom or coat check service – visitors typically hang coats on pegs in the foyer or keep them with their chair. Phones work normally here; there is public Wi-Fi only for students, so guests should rely on mobile data if needed. Overall, expect an informal school environment: friendly but unpretentious, as opposed to a polished performance venue.

### Nearby Amenities

Although Inshes is largely residential, a few useful amenities cluster not far from the school. Immediately to the north is the \*\*Inshes Retail Park\*\* (postcode IV2 3TW) . This small shopping complex has a Tesco Extra supermarket (open early to late) with attached petrol station, a Boots pharmacy, and some fast-food outlets. It’s about a 2-minute walk over from the school. If you need groceries or a quick coffee, Tesco’s cafe can be handy. The Retail Park’s big car park is routinely used by school visitors (see previous section). Just opposite the Retail Park (across Inshes Road on Beechwood Park) is the \*\*Inshes Gate Brewers Fayre pub & restaurant\*\* . This family-friendly pub has a large indoor play area for kids, and serves burgers, fish-and-chips, grills and the like. It’s convenient for a pre- or post-event meal. Other dining choices nearby are limited – Inverness city centre has the nearest wide variety of restaurants (around a 10-minute drive away) – but for something quick there is also a McDonald’s and a Pizza Hut on the Inverness Retail Park (Raigmore/Brough) about 1.5 miles west, and a Subway at the Aspen Business Park. For drinks and coffee, small newsagents and a Co-op are on Wester Inshes, and a Starbucks and Costa are on the Northern Meeting Park (a 10-minute drive toward town). If you’re staying overnight, Inverness offers many hotels: the luxury Ness Walk and Kingsmills (with spa) are 5–10 minutes by car, while familiar chains (Premier Inn, Travelodge) are near Raigmore. Local buses run past the school into town late into the evening, but after ~22:00 public transport options drop off – at that point taxis or rideshares from the city centre back to Inshes are the safest bet for late-night travel.

### What Makes This Venue Special

Though it’s “just a primary school” to outsiders, Inshes Primary stands out for several reasons. Architecturally and socially, it was among the first generation of 2000s schools in Scotland built with community use in mind. It won praise right from its opening for its open-plan, high-tech classrooms and emphasis on inclusion. It also broke new ground by integrating a full nursery and a public lending library under one roof – a combination unusual in rural districts. The school’s very name and logo (often hands joined in a circle) emphasize teamwork and Highland identity. Historically, Inshes has already achieved “firsts” locally. It quickly became the largest primary school in the Highlands by the end of its first year , a symbol of the area’s fast growth. Presentation ceremonies (like Provost Gray’s unveiling of the opening plaque) underline the pride in having such a fine school building. The Inshes TEAM motto (“Together Everyone Achieves More”) is woven into events and banners throughout the campus , reinforcing the idea that this place is more than bricks and mortar – it’s a community hub. Many teachers have remained long-term, building deep relationships, so generations of local families feel a personal connection. Culturally, it’s special because concerts, plays and sports days here involve children from diverse new neighborhoods around Inverness – the sense of coming together has been noted by journalists and parents alike as a highlight of the school’s short history . The high quality of education and extra-curricular activities (from Gaelic singing to football training) has earned Inshes a reputation as a “happy, safe and successful” school right in its first decade . In practical terms, artists performing for local causes or touring musicians appreciate having access to the full-size hall with bleachers, an arrangement seldom found at other primary schools. And unlike isolated country schools, Inshes sits next to shops and transport routes – it truly feels like the community’s centre.

### Visitor Tips and Information

\*\*Accessibility:\*\* As a modern building, Inshes Primary is fully accessible. There are ramps at the entrance, wide internal corridors, and at least one disabled toilet in the reception wing. Classrooms and halls are on two main storeys with lifts on site, so wheelchair users and families with pushchairs can get around. The sports hall and library areas are on ground level from the main foyer. Assistance dogs are welcome (per Scottish school policy). Parents of children with special needs note that the school’s additional-support classrooms have specialised equipment, but visitors likely won’t need it. \*\*Entry and Security:\*\* Visitors should use the main front door (or assembly hall doors during large events); it’s normally locked during class hours, so ring the buzzer to be admitted. You may be asked to sign in or to wear a visitor badge – this is routine. Photo ID might be requested (especially for newcomers). Mobile phones are allowed, but out of courtesy keep them on silent during performances or meetings. No formal dress code applies – smart-casual is perfectly fine (though it can get chilly in old halls, so a jacket is wise if you’ll be sitting). \*\*What to Bring/Not Bring:\*\* Aside from personal items, you likely won’t require much. There’s rarely organized merchandise or branded souvenirs (it’s a school, not a concert venue), and no official programme to buy at events. If attending an evening event, a folding chair from school might be available, but you could bring a cushion. For sports, spectators usually just use the bleachers. Avoid bringing large bags or valuables; theft risk is minimal, but space is tight. The school has a strict no-smoking policy (like all UK schools, including e-cigarettes), so smoking is only allowed outside the grounds at designated spots if at all. Drones, professional cameras, or alcohol are absolutely prohibited (the latter on anyone’s school grounds). \*\*Arrival Advice:\*\* Plan to arrive at least 10–15 minutes early for any event to find parking and get inside. Children’s assemblies or shows often start promptly, and late arrivals can be distracting. On rainy days be aware that the playground can get slippery; hold hands on the path. If attending with a child, the playground next to the school is fun but only use it with supervision. After parking, follow the marked walkways to the main entrance. Signposted student drop-off (on Inshes Road at the staff car park exit) is only for immediate pick-ups; do not double-park there. \*\*Refreshments:\*\* There are no food vendors inside the school, so if you plan to eat, likely do so before or after your visit. A favourite local tradition is grabbing a meal at the Brewers Fayre on Beechwood Park , which is child-friendly and open till late. The Tesco on site has a 24-hour Starbucks café and a hot deli counter; another cafe option is the Teashop at Inshes Club/Thatched House (a short walk away). For evening events, you could treat the kids to chips and ice cream at the Retail Park as a fun outing after school. \*\*Age Restrictions:\*\* Inshes Primary is a child-focused environment, but visitors of all ages are welcome at family events. No age restrictions apply to performances (though some content might be aimed at kids). Unaccompanied children are not allowed unless enrolled or clearly attending a school-organized function (and even then they wait in designated areas). The library events are generally open to all ages, but check if a specific event is children-only or adult-only. \*\*Other Tips:\*\* If you need to call or text the school, note the telephone number is 01463 725920 (800am–4pm weekdays) via Highland Council services. Emergency weather closures (snow, etc.) are announced on local radio or the Highland Council website; in such rare cases the school’s homepage or sign will indicate closures. Keep change handy if you use the school parking meter near the entrance (though most visitors stay in the free Tesco lot). When queuing to enter, British courtesy (queuing) applies even for kids’ events – it moves fast, and staff usually guide everyone in an orderly way. Finally, remember that Inshes Primary is first and foremost a neighbourhood school, so showing consideration (keep voices down in corridors, watch for playground lines, etc.) is appreciated. Do arrive with a positive, community-minded attitude – after all, everyone here is working “together” just as the motto says!

#### What is the address of Inshes Primary School?

Inshes Primary School is located on Inshes Road in Inverness. The full address is **Inshes Primary School, Inshes Road, Inverness, IV2 3RF** .

#### How can I get to Inshes Primary by public transport?

Local Stagecoach buses serve Inshes. For example, route 5C from Inverness city centre stops at “Inshes Primary School (at)” and “(opp)” adjacent to the school . Other city buses (e.g. 5A, 2A) stop at nearby Inshes Retail Park, a few minutes’ walk away. The nearest railway station is Inverness (about 4 km away) – from there you’d transfer to a bus. Always check current timetables for service changes on the Highland bus network.

#### Is there parking available at the school?

Street parking around Inshes Primary is limited and mainly reserved for school staff. Visitors are best off using the nearby *Inshes Retail Park* (Tesco Extra) car park, which is free and only a short walk away . On busy school days, you may need to park a few streets over and walk. Avoid double-parking or blocking the school drive during drop-off and pick-up times.

#### What facilities does the school have internally?

The school has a large multi-purpose hall/gym with a full-size football pitch outside and bleacher seating inside . There are 15 classrooms, two nursery rooms, specialized support rooms for pupils with additional needs, and a combined school/public library . Reception areas and corridors are wide and accessible. Restrooms (including disabled facilities) are located near the foyer and at each end of the main corridor. Cafeteria/dining hall is separate (not open to the public), so expect minimal snack/food service for visitors apart from occasional event refreshments organized by the PTA.

#### Do I need tickets to attend a school event?

No, most school events are not ticketed. Performances, assemblies and parents’ evenings are invitation-based (for pupils and their families) and free of charge. Public events like the after-school library or community sports clubs also do not require tickets. Only private holiday camps or external groups using the school hall might charge admission, but these are promoted separately. If in doubt, contact the school or check with the organizing group for any event-specific booking info.

#### Are there age restrictions to visit the school?

The school welcomes visitors of any age, but general events (like assemblies or concerts) are primarily aimed at children and their families. Younger children (pre-school age) can attend with a parent or guardian, but unaccompanied toddlers may find the environment overwhelming. There’s no dress code – casual attire is fine. Since Inshes is an active school, visitors should maintain a calm, respectful behaviour (no running in corridors). Typically, if you have a child enrolled at the school, attending events with them is normal. Otherwise, unless invited or attending a public program, visitors are usually family or community members.

#### Does Inshes Primary have disabled access?

Yes. The school was built to modern accessibility standards. There are ramps at the main entrance and an elevator/lift to reach any upper floors. Wide corridors and an accessible restroom (with changing table) are present near the foyer. All main halls and classrooms on the ground floor are step-free. The school library and gym are on the ground level too, so wheelchair users can navigate around without issue. In general, Inshes accommodates visitors with mobility needs, as well as those with visual or hearing impairments.

#### Can I bring food or drink into the school?

It’s fine to bring a personal bottle of water. Outside food is not provided or sold by the school (unless it’s a bake sale or refreshment stand run by volunteers during special events). If you bring snacks or drinks, please do not make a mess and dispose of rubbish in bins. Under no circumstances should alcohol be brought onto school premises (this is strictly prohibited). During performances or fairs the school may offer tea/coffee and light snacks, but typically the kitchen is off-limits, and major eating should happen outside the building (e.g. in your car or at a nearby café) to avoid disruptions.

#### Are there any restrictions on photography or filming?

Yes. While the school occasionally allows parents to photograph or video performances involving their own children (like Christmas concerts), any broader recording typically requires permission. You should never photograph random children without explicit consent. For any public event or festival, check beforehand with the school or event organizers about photo policies. In principle, personal snapshots at class concerts are usually okay, but social media sharing should avoid showing children who are not your own. Also, no drone or professional video equipment is permitted on-site without permission.

#### What happens if the weather is bad on an event day?

Since events at Inshes Primary are mostly indoors (in the hall or gym), they generally go ahead rain or shine. However, outdoor activities (sports day, playground gatherings) will be moved inside if it’s wet. Check local media or the Highland Council website for any school closure notifications in case of severe weather (snow/ice). If the main driving conditions are poor, the school will usually send alerts to parents via email or a note on their website. During regular hours, allow extra travel time in bad weather; the school keeps roofs and paths clear if possible.

#### Does the school have Wi-Fi that visitors can use?

There is no public Wi-Fi for visitors. Inshes Primary’s Wi-Fi is restricted to staff and educational use. However, mobile phone coverage (4G/5G) from major UK carriers is typically strong inside the building, so you can use cellular data. You can also ask staff for any quick internet needs, as they may have a guest login or point you to a computer. But generally, plan on using your own device’s network for any online work during your visit.
