Jameson Connects and Azadi Records swirl in Bengaluru-based R&B mainstays RANJ X CLIFR and rapper Meba Ofilia from Shillong to deliver a five-track EP titled ‘Play Me!’
Stitched together as part of the second season of Jameson Connects Jam Pad accelerator initiative, RANJ X CLIFR and Meba Ofilia soak in numerous learnings and influences across cities Bengaluru, Shillong, and Mumbai to produce four new tracks and also shake up their 2024 single, ‘Ain’t Like Me,’ on this collaborative offering.
Tapping ‘R. EAL Y.UNG L.UV!’ first, the track pours out a groovy beat polished by Meba’s smooth singing and RANJ’s quick-fire rap segments with a catchy guitar rhythm pleasingly plugged in. ‘MONSTER’ ensues next and adds Shillong-based producer-singer duo Dappest and adL in the mix, staging a mischievous hip-hop beat.
Commencing with a plucky guitar intro, rappers RANJ and Dappest go on to trade multiple back-and-forth rap bars. According to the press release, its chorus “explores the darker side of love, where pleasure and pain, truth and deceit blur.”
Celebrating “confidence, empowerment, and self-expression” is ‘MAMA SAID!’ noted by its soul-meets hip-hop touch and lush production. Meba and RANJ notch things up and go on to exchange spirited rhymes over a sonic canvas of throbbing suspenseful themes.
Introduced with strummy guitar chords, the title track ‘PLAY ME!’ twists in a genre-fluid arrangement sewed together with reflective lyrics, vibrant production, soothing vocal textures, and a bevy of instrumentation. This track speaks to the “interplay between desire and frustration.”
‘AIN’T LIKE ME!’ gets a stellar percussion-riddled revamp, flared up with a rap verse via Meba to close the EP.
Jameson Connects Jam Pad serves as an incubation program for musicians focusing on community-oriented learning through mentorships, grants, and opportunities to work with leading industry professionals. Season one tied in Delhi-based composer-producer Jay Pei and Thailand-based pop/alternative act H I N A N O.
CLIFR talked about this endeavor in the season two episode one snippet, stating, “Jameson Connect Jam Pad supporting us to this EP and execute our ideas at a better level is like a dream come true.” Meanwhile, RANJ declared, “Working with Jameson Connects so far has been a holistic experience. It always feels like they are investing in us, in our music, and in our dreams which is great.”
