Dublin-based DJ and RTÉ 2FM broadcaster Graham has reimagined melodic drum & bass for the tiniest of ravers with his new project, ‘Music For Babies To Rave And Sleep To.‘
Released on September 5, 2025, via independent label Practise Music, the 38-minute album rounds together sounds from a toy piano and kalimba to carve a soft, playful soundscape. The Irish musician also puts forward a childlike articulation of the track’s titles, such as ‘Toy Pianonono’ and ‘Kalimbarama.’
Each track is further tagged as ‘Before Sleeping,’ ‘Before Raving,’ and ‘For Raving,’ offering a guide for parents and caregivers putting together a baby-friendly setlist for the right moment.
Smyth told District Magazine, “If you give an adult a keyboard they will probably try to bang out a hesitant version of ‘Chopsticks’, whereas a child might throw it, bang it, rub it, hit it, even eat it so, I thought that all the typical sounds (not the eating) that children make when interacting with the instruments should be included in the production.”
For this album, Gareth probed into how different sounds and frequencies affect young children’s development. He also spoke with child psychologists and teamed up with producer Gareth Redmond, who specializes in ambient textures.
The artwork features smeared brush strokes of bright yellow, blue, red, and a hint of green that likely reflect the joy and playfulness of a child exploring a color palette.
As shared on his Bandcamp Page, Graham hopes that “‘Music For Babies To Rave And Sleep To’ could be the gateway record for young children to develop the same passion and fascination for music that their parents have.”
‘Music For Babies To Rave And Sleep To’ by Graham Smyth is currently available on all major platforms, with a limited vinyl release also available for purchase.
