Radio Starr comes from the team behind Belfast’s celebrated record store Starr Records.
Radio Starr premieres on the first day of the Sound of Belfast Festival on November 6, which has been curated by the Oh Yeah Music Centre. This festival hosts several music events and is a celebration of a variety of music genres and music culture in Belfast and its UNESCO City of Music status.
The soon-to-be-launched station vows to commit to representation, saying, “At Radio Starr, we believe music should reflect the full spectrum of voices in our community. That’s why we pledge that 50%+ of our output will feature female, underrepresented and global majority voices in our shows, playlists, and events,” as per their website. This is a space for voices that are often brushed aside to be heard.
Founded by Sinéad Green and Jeff Doherty, the programming of Radio Starr will include shows, live performances, talk shows, playlists, events, and more. Jordan Nocturne, Katie Eem, Pete Brady, Surface Noise Vinyl Mixtapes, and Nik Muska are among the first set of names confirmed to make an appearance on Radio Starr, alongside Hannah McCormick, Iain McCreedy, Chris Frieze, Timmy Stewart, Pete Renshaw, and Carlo Calloluca.
“We’ve been absolutely flabbergasted by the amount of submissions and support we’ve received. It’s been a long time in planning and researching and we just want to thank everyone who’s supported us, got in touch for shows, and helped with the studio build – we couldn’t have done it without you. Now, it begins,” co-founder Sinéad Green said, as per Mixmag.
