International Awareness Days and Weeks in October 2022

International Day of Older Persons

Senior citizens have been through life longer than us and have thus gained many experiences. Therefore, they are able to pass on information and knowledge about traditions and cultures to us. As they grow older and become vulnerable, they begin to face many issues. These include financial problems such as poverty, sickness or illness, discrimination, and even abuse, which are harmful to them.

To celebrate the importance of the elderly, the International Day of older persons is marked on October 1. They too are responsible citizens and contribute to our society.

International Day of Non-Violence

October 2 is observed as International Day of Non-Violence as it is the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He is widely known for leading India to independence and is therefore regarded as the “Father of the Nation.” First observed in 2007, the International Day of Non-Violence aims to spread awareness about non-violence.

World Habitat Day is a reminder that we are responsible for shaping what becomes of our habitat, cities, and towns. It gives us a chance to think about the human settlements in the world. World Habitat Day is marked on October 3, and it underlines the basic right of shelter for all. The 2022 theme for the Day is “Mind the Gap. Leave No One and Place Behind.”

World Space Week

World Space Week seeks to inspire students as well as spread awareness about space activities. The 2022 theme for the week is “Space and Sustainability,” which is quite self-explanatory. It centers on achieving sustainability in space. Sputnik 1, the first human-made satellite from Earth was launched into outer space on October 4, 1957. Therefore, World Space Week is celebrated from October 4 to October 10.

World Teacher’s Day is celebrated on October 5. On this day, students and people all around the world show appreciation for their teachers. Teachers are honored with cards, gifts, and tokens of appreciation for their contribution to society. Cotton is a comfortable fiber that is worn by many, and the agricultural commodity is also food. This day allows us to celebrate the positive impact the growth of cotton has had on our society by creating jobs and helping alleviate poverty in developing or least-developed countries. World Cotton Day is celebrated on October 7. This day was launched in 2019 due to the initiative of Chad, Benin, Mali, and Burkina Faso, the “Cotton-4 countries.” These four are cotton-producing countries.

World Migratory Bird Day helps underline the importance of migratory birds and the need for their conservation as well as the preservation of their habitat. The day aims to raise global awareness about the threats and problems these birds face, with light pollution being a major threat. The 2022 theme for World Migratory Bird Day is Light Pollution. World Migratory Bird Day is marked on October 8.

World Post Day

Long before instant-messaging apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, and more could take over, the Universal Postal Union enabled people to communicate with those across the world by writing them letters. World Post Day is celebrated on October 9 as the Universal Postal Union was established on this day in 1874.

The day was started to spread awareness about the importance of the postal sector. Its objective is also to tell people about the contributions of the postal sector to our society, which has helped in the development of the countries on our planet. The theme for the day this year is Post for Planet.

October 10 is World Mental Health Day. Looking after our mental health is just as important as taking care of our physical health. The services required for mental health are far less than what is needed as the growing social and economic inequalities and violence are fueling short and long-term stresses. They are thwarting any progress towards our well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic only increased the number of people suffering from mental illnesses, mainly both anxiety and depressive disorders.

World Mental Health Day aims to spread awareness of mental health issues. It gives us an opportunity to learn what can be done to take care of our mental health. It is important to check on our loved ones and people who may seem aloof, distressed or depressed.

International Day of the Girl Child

2022 marks the 10th anniversary of the International Day of the Girl Child. The day helps draw attention to the challenges, inequalities, and issues girls face with regard to their education and physical and mental health. Having access to services is even more challenging for girls with disabilities. This day promotes girls’ empowerment and recognizes their rights. The International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated on October 11.

International Day for the Disaster Risk Reduction

Many people are displaced, face losses, and become homeless due to disasters such as tsunamis, floods, volcanic eruptions, and cyclones. The day helps to spread awareness about the efforts being made to reduce the risk of disaster and loss of life.

According to the International Day for the Disaster Risk Reduction website, this year the day will draw attention to “substantially increase the availability of and access to multi-hazard early warning systems and disaster risk information and assessments to people by 2030.” The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is observed on October 13.

International Day of Rural Women

International Day of Rural Women is celebrated on October 15. Rural women play a crucial role in our society. Many women are part of the agricultural labor force, but they don’t have the same access to resources and equal pay as men. They face inequality and discrimination, which leads to malnutrition and poverty.

The International Day of Rural Women recognizes, appreciates, and spreads awareness about the contributions of rural women. The solution to fighting poverty and related problems is to give rural women the same opportunities as men.

There is no doubt that we can celebrate the delicious food we eat on this day, but that is not the objective of World Food Day. Many people all around us go hungry and face challenges in getting even one meal a day, and on the other hand, a lot of food is wasted too. Along with malnutrition, this day also aims to spread awareness about sustainability.

Economic inequality is the root cause of poverty, which further causes many difficulties in people’s lives. It leads to hunger, malnutrition, and limited access to education, healthcare, and other opportunities. Impoverished people are also more vulnerable to damage and destruction caused by natural disasters. Reaching out to the poor and helping them is very important, not only for us but also for those in power.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, observed on October 17, promotes the eradication of poverty and fights inequality and discrimination. The day also spreads awareness of all those suffering because of poverty.
