All You Need to Know About Summer Haze, New Zealand

Presented by Corona, New Zealand’s premium multi-genre outdoor music festival, Summer Haze, returns with two concerts!

Headlining the event are electronic outfit Shapeshifter, blues, reggae, and soul group Fat Freddy’s Drop, and rock band King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Summer Haze is set to take place on December 29, 2022, at Wharepai Domain in Tauranga and on January 4, 2023, at Matakana Country Park, Matakana. Here are a few things to know about one of the most definitive live music events of the summer!

Both the Matakana and Tauranga performances were approaching their final ticket releases as early as November 2022, and it is easy to understand why. Attendees will be gripped by the sounds of New Zealand’s five-piece drum & bass, jazz, funk, rock, and electronica outfit Shapeshifter. The band, which consists of PDigsss, Sam Trevethick, Dan McGruer, Nick Robinson, and Darren Mathiassen, were announced as the headliners in August of this year.

Shapeshifter – Monarch

Speaking ahead of the music festival, the band said on Instagram, “First two shows for the sunny season – Summer Haze is back. Blessed to be sharing the stage with world class bands who will bring those good vibes.”

Aotearoa icon Fat Freddy’s Drop, a seven-piece ensemble, will be co-headlining Summer Haze at both locations! They are performing as part of a four-city New Zealand tour that includes gigs in Christchurch and Auckland. Dub, drum & bass, jazz, reggae, rhythm and blues, techno, soul, and funk are all elements of their musical approach.

Black Comet – Sleep

The opening act for the festival, bringing unique sounds and summer vibes to Matakana and Tauranga, is Black Comet. The five-piece group characterizes its music as “heavy galactic funk from the far reaches of space.”
