Actors are still voicing their support and have joined the writers on the picket line amidst the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike while some of the most anticipated movies of this year were released this month. In addition to Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ directed by Christopher Nolan, a sequel to ‘Insidious: Chapter 2′ also came to theaters this month. A new series starring ‘One Day at a Time’ actor Justina Machado, a Netflix show about the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan, and a thriller series from the co-creator of ‘Yellowstone,’ are among the television series that arrived on the small screen this month!

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One
The savior of the cinema, Tom Cruise, leaps back into the role of IMF agent Ethan Hunt once again in the seventh installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise. MI: Dead Recking sees Hunt pitted against an unimaginable adversary. Ethan and his IMF team must track down a frightening new technology that dangers all of mankind before it slips into malicious hands.

Netflix calls back viewers to the post-apocalyptic nail-biter flick ‘Bird Box’ events in a spinoff movie set up in Spain, ‘Bird Box: Barcelona.’ Equipped with eye covers Sebastián and his daughter Anna navigate the streets of Barcelona in a journey of survival. Bird Box is adapted from the works of author Josh Malerman.

Insidious: The Red Door
‘Insidious: The Red Door’ is a sequel to ‘Insidious: Chapter 2’ (2013) that takes audiences back to the Lambert family household. A decade later, the father Josh, and his son Dalton are struggling with their repressed memories of the previous film’s events. While attempting to restore a broken father-son relationship, they must venture farther into ‘The Further’ than ever before to lay their demons to rest finally.
Actor Patrick Wilson sits in the director’s chair for this one with horror film specialists Jason Blum and James Wan overseeing production. ‘Insidious: The Red Door’ closes out the Insidious Franchise while also ushering in a spinoff movie ‘Thread: An Insidious Tale.’

Barbie
After multiple animated adaptions, filmmaker Greta Gerwig gives Mattel’s iconic Barbie doll a live-action film. Barbie has a dreamy lifestyle in the pink city of Barbie Land. Following a series of unsettling experiences, Barbie ventures outside of Barbieland into the real world to discover what unlocked this chain of events. The ways of the human world quickly catch her off guard. Barbie’s hit soundtrack includes music performed by Nicki Minaj, Dua Lipa, Lizzo, Charli XCX, Sam Smith, and PinkPantheress to name a few.

Oppenheimer
In this film, actor Cillian Murphy dons the role of theoretical physicist and father of the atomic bomb J. Robert Oppenheimer. Spanning three hours, Oppenheimer’s role in the Manhattan Project to create an atomic explosion is explored. Oppenheimer struggles to grip his creation which saves lives and could end the war while also setting off a chain reaction that could destroy it.
The film has an ensemble cast that also includes actors Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Jason Clarke, Tom Conti, David Dastmalchian, Gustaf Skarsgård, Olivia Thirlby, and Gary Oldman. Noted figures such as Lewis Strauss, Ernest Lawrence, Niels Bohr, Harry S. Truman, and Albert Einstein are also portrayed in the film.
Joy Ride
Directed by Adele Lim, the R-rated comedy movie tracks a group of four Chinese-American friends who travel through China in search of one of their birth mothers. This is also director Adele Lim’s feature film debut release, which has a 7/10 rating on IMDB and a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Horror of Dolores Roach
From Blumhouse Productions, the producers of ‘M3GAN,’ comes ‘The Horror of Dolores Roach,’ a new series on Prime Video. This six-episode series centers on Dolores Roach, who reunites with an old friend Luis after serving a 16-year unjust prison sentence. She returns to her now-gentrified Washington Heights neighborhood and tries to find a job. Dolores then begins working as a masseuse in Luis’ empanada shop’s basement. She does whatever it takes to survive.

The Days
‘The Days’ is about the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan caused by the most powerful earthquake in the country in 2011. The eight-episode series takes viewers through events that take place for seven days. It is told from the perspective of corporate organizations, employees at the nuclear power plant, and the government.

From the co-creator of ‘Yellowstone’ and the writer of ‘Sicario’ comes a thriller series ‘Special Ops: Lioness’ on Paramount+. The eight-episode series is based on the real-life CIA’s Lioness program and sees Joe as the station chief for the program. The CIA hires a marine, Cruz, in this team where women are trained for secret missions. Joe is tasked with teaching Cruz and other new operatives. Cruz must befriend a billionaire to take down a terrorist organization.
