Kochi-born and Goa-based musician Michael Dias releases his fourth single ‘The Fruit,’ featuring the vocal prowess of singer Shakthisree Gopalan. The newest offering serves as a precursor to Dias’ upcoming debut album, ‘Show Me What’s Real.’
Singer-songwriter Michael Dias follows up his September release ‘I Will Let You Go‘ with a solid five-minute composition, ‘The Fruit.’ The piece unfurls with plucky guitar rhythms while also tapping a sequence of melodic strings and key arrangements. Guided by soothing vocals from Dias and Gopalan, the song steadily builds to narrate the growth and collapse of a relationship. The production also features an elegant vocal joust between the singers as it weaves into a splendid harmonizing sequence.
Michael Dias spoke with us about ‘The Fruit,’ he said, “This song is very personal and means a lot to me as it aptly describes the rise and fall of a relationship I had. I wrote this song with the idea of keeping both sides of the story intertwined with each other.” The songwriter and guitarist reeled in Shakthisree Gopalan on vocals, as “it definitely needed a female voice for the song to be complete,” according to Michael.
The two have known each other for almost fifteen years and have performed together as Mad Shakthi Cherryworks, along with a mutual friend Cherry. Speaking about working with Gopalan, Dias remarks, “She was indeed thrilled and jumped on board without a moment’s hesitation. In the middle of her extremely hectic schedule, she managed to find time to lay down her vocal tracks for me. Although the lyrics and the melody were all mine, it’s only right to say that this song would never have been complete without her beautiful voice on it.”
The artwork for ‘The Fruit’ depicts a whirlwind of an underwater cosmic adventure, illustrating an outstretched arm clutching onto a beating heart that is shrouded by florets. This depiction could be directly referencing the artwork for Dias’s previous release ‘I Will Let You Go,’ which also features a fluorescent blue female figure sitting on the sea bed. The artwork was concocted by Michael’s sister Rebecca Dias, a fashion designer by profession who dabbles in illustration as a hobby. The songwriter praised her work, saying, “She’s done a fabulous job of representing my ideas about the songs through her art and I’m really excited to be sharing her work with my music.”
Michael Dias is a guitarist and singer-songwriter with more than ten years of experience in the independent music scene in India. His music spews out elements of folk, blues, jazz, vintage rock, and modern pop, and was associated with the Bangalore-based rock band Mad Orange Fireworks. He is slated to release his debut ten-track album on November 3, 2023. “Every song has gone in a fairly different direction genre but it could be widely categorized as pop rock,” says Michael.
