Mr. GnG Crawls Into the Chasms of Heartache on New Release, ‘Room 103’

India and France-based rock outfit Mr. GnG, comprised of musicians Ishan Dave and Abhilash Sreekumar, talk about their new out-and-out hard rock/post-grunge ballad, ‘Room 103.’

After cooking up stripped-back renditions of their most beloved tunes ‘Goodbye,’ ‘Chasing Dragon Tails’ and ‘Contraband’ (featuring singer Akshita Patel) earlier this year, vocalist/guitarist Ishan Dave and keyboardist/drummer Abhilash Sreekumar now present their latest musical endeavor, ‘Room 103.’ The newest track is accompanied by a music video courtesy of Flawed Film Factory and directed by Dev Mehta.

‘Room 103’ takes flight with ethereal sounds and brims with hardy bass plucks and percussive movement in a tangible immersive audio approach. Penned in the city of Lyon in France, Dave’s robust voice passionately captures the lyrics as the song oozes stellar key arrangements and guitar rhythms. Laced within the track is a blazing guitar riff, which sonically captures the intensity of the narrative, muddying the lines between love and chaos.

Discussing their songwriting, the duo tells us, “We faced a host of challenges working together – All the things we expected to boost our process, like finding inspiration in those special moments while jamming together. We were so used to developing our ideas in isolation and working on them tirelessly over days before sharing it across, that coming up with equally compelling ideas on the spot was not easy.”

We further probed about the song lyrics, to which Mr. GnG declared, “The lyrics tell the story of a deeply conflicted mind and soul – Dave understands that his rage and abuse are the reasons his partner had to leave him. But he is so possessive about her that while he regrets his actions, he would rather kill himself than live a life without her. Their love, once true and joyous, has now turned into poison and will eventually finish him.”

The pair describe the music video for ‘Room 103’ as “quite unlike anything we’ve done before,” as it was not only filmed in just one night but also reeled in director Dev Mehta and cinematographer/editor Vraj Kaniyavala. “Shot entirely in just one night, the video captures the essence of the song by portraying a ‘Room’ covered in plastic, which eventually suffocates Dave’s partner. Dave’s suicidal state of mind is also shown subtly in the scenes where he is standing on a ledge,” they said about the video.

Post ‘Room 103,’ the future looks bright for Mr.GnG as they have produced eight new tracks for their upcoming full-length album, currently underway at Ahmedabad’s famed Compassbox Studios.

Welded together in 2021, Mr. GnG picked up as a two-piece rock band rooted in the sounds of the 80s. The duo is intimately acquainted with each other’s musical styles and performance techniques owing to their time together in the now-defunct college band, Realm of Shadows. Mr. GnG added ‘Room 103’ to their resume of music releases, which also includes their debut EP ‘EPonymous,’ released in 2022.
