Irish Kids Take the World by Storm With New Drum & Bass Rap Song

Ireland’s Kabin Studio, comprised of young songwriters, rappers, musicians, and other volunteers, have eyeballs rolling and heads turning the world over with their drum & bass banger, ‘The Spark.’

“We’re doing stuff like this all the time – new songs every week with the team of talented and caring tutors and volunteers at The Kabin. This one just happened to go a little bit further,” conveyed Garry McCarthy, the founder of Kabin Studio, in a press statement.

Cork-based non-profit music and creative nexus Kabin Studio and Clare County’s Lisdoonvarna Crew are responsible for this year’s mega-hit ‘The Spark.’ The sensational track is performed by a cluster of talented kids (aged 9-12) who trade turns passionately, rapping wholesome lyrics and spitting bars.

Verses in the track capture a story of overcoming hardships and challenges, and finding one’s creative voice, exhibited by motivational lines like, “If you’re proud of who you are and what you do, shout it,” and “If we see a dream you know we’re gonna chase it / So get over any fear you have just face it.”

The song’s chorus and first verse were recorded in the Kabin Studio during an Easter camp held in March, while the second verse was recorded at a Rhyme Island outreach workshop at a direct provision center for asylum seekers in Lisdoonvarna.

‘The Spark’ was released on YouTube and TikTok in May 2024 in the lead-up to Ireland’s national day of celebrating children’s creativity or Cruinniu na nÓg (June 15, 2024). It has since exploded worldwide, amassing over a million views on YouTube and making headlines in all major music publications. It was later released to audio platforms on June 13.

Meanwhile, the kids have upheld this momentum, taking their tune to Cork’s radio station RedFM, Dolans Limerick Irish Pub, and pulling off an unforgettable live performance in front of an audience of 15,000 people at Musgrave Park in Cork courtesy of an invitation from EDM icon Becky Hill.

The Kabin Studio was founded by music producer Garry McCarthy aka GMCBeats in 2012. It focuses on music at a grassroots level, orchestrating music-related workshops, camps, outreach activities, and other projects. Kids, teens, and adults can express themselves freely through art forms such as rap, songwriting, poetry, videography, podcasting, digital media, etc., via this organization.

GMCBeats shared in a press release, “The response has been amazing; the kids’ energy and positivity have inspired people worldwide. It’s been all over TikTok especially. It’s bonkers, we’ve never seen something like this!”

McCarthy elaborated on the origins of the music single, saying: “During one of our weekly rap workshops with the kids, we were looking for something upbeat to bring up the energy and found a PapaPedro-produced drum n bass beat online, and instantly started coming up with the initial chants and chorus ideas.”
