About Rydges Auckland
Rydges Auckland is a 4.5-star hotel and event venue in the heart of Auckland’s CBD. Built in 1996 (smoke.co.nz ), this “urban oasis” offers 267 guest rooms and suites (www.newzealand.com ). The hotel’s style is contemporary and cosmopolitan – the Rydges site describes it as “a vibrant mix of London sophistication, Sydney cool and New York style” underpinned by warm Kiwi hospitality (www.rydges.com ). Rydges is notable for its dramatic rooftop terrace: an all-weather, glass-surrounded deck on the 10th floor that showcases panoramic city and harbour views (Sky Tower, Harbour Bridge, Viaduct Harbour) (www.hospitalitybusiness.co.nz ) (acb.aucklandnz.com ). Central to Auckland’s conference and party scene, Rydges has 12 distinctive event spaces (including ballrooms and boardrooms) bathed in natural light with floor-to-ceiling windows and cutting-edge AV gear (nzvenues.co.nz ) (acb.aucklandnz.com ). (It was used as a managed-isolation facility during the COVID years, then fully refurbished and reopened on May 1, 2022 (www.hospitalitybusiness.co.nz ).) Signature features include the rooftop’s stratospheric views, the in-house CUT Restaurant & Bar (modern NZ cuisine and premium meat dishes (www.hospitalitybusiness.co.nz ) (nzvenues.co.nz )), and the iconic Sky Tower vista from many harbour-view rooms (acb.aucklandnz.com ) (www.rydges.com ). Rydges’ role in the community has been as a major meeting-and-dining venue – it’s a beloved spot for Kiwi-designed events, weddings, conferences and skyline cocktails, and a gateway to Auckland’s waterfront bustle (www.hospitalitybusiness.co.nz ) (nzvenues.co.nz ).
Events and Programming
Rydges Auckland isn’t a traditional concert hall, but it hosts a lively mix of gatherings year-round. One standout is the rooftop’s “Summer Series” of pop-up music events – for example in 2019–2020 the hotel presented free, open-air Sunset Sessions on the Rooftop Terrace featuring DJs and headliners, drawing crowds for afternoon parties (heartofthecity.co.nz ). On the programming side, you’ll also find corporate conferences, gala dinners, wedding receptions and annual parties in its ballrooms and meeting rooms (planners can accommodate up to about 250 people in a theatre setup (nzvenues.co.nz ) (nzvenues.co.nz )). Past rooftop events have ranged from chilled DJ sets to pop-up festivals with headlining acts, and venues like The CUT bar sometimes host live acoustic or DJ nights. The hotel reopened fully in 2022, and since then it has resumed hosting business conventions and social galas that draw local and international guests. Many large-scale corporate events (annual conferences, industry fairs, award dinners, charity balls) regularly use Rydges’ flexible spaces. Typical ticket prices for invited events vary widely: free or low-cost for in-house showcases, up to several hundred dollars for formal galas. In brief, you can expect Rydges to be a home base for buskers in summer, a conference hub in midweek, and a wedding-and-party hotspot on weekends. There’s always something going on from weekday seminars to Sunday jazz-on-the-rooftop in summer. (heartofthecity.co.nz ) (nzvenues.co.nz )
Tickets and Booking
Because Rydges is primarily a hotel and conference center, there’s no single “box office” or general admission tickets. Public events (like rooftop music parties) are often free or ticketed through local event platforms. When tickets are sold for public concerts or fundraisers, they’ll be available via event promoters or sites like Eventfinda or PlateUp NZ (rather than at the hotel itself). For private events (weddings, corporate functions), entry is by invitation or pre-arranged booking. In practice, the word “booking” at Rydges typically means reservations for accommodation or event packages. Guests reserve rooms through Rydges’ own website or loyalty club (EVENT Club) or via travel-booking sites. Room rates vary by date and room type, roughly from NZ$179 to $599 per night as advertised (www.newzealand.com ) – city views tend toward the lower end, harbour-view suites at the higher end. If an event is open to the public, information is normally published on Auckland event calendars or social media rather than a local box office. For in-demand conferences or functions, it’s best to book early: enquire directly with the Rydges events team to lock in space and catering. (No dressy gala tickets or concert passes are sold at the front desk – that’s done online. At check-in, the hotel will confirm your room package and any add-ons like breakfast or parking.)
Seating and Layout
Rydges Auckland’s layout is a mix of hotel floors and event floors. Hotel rooms occupy floors 1–9, while the top level (10th floor) is the rooftop terrace. On the ground and mezzanine you’ll find main meeting spaces and the lobby bar. Key event rooms include:
Rooftop Terrace (10th floor): An open-air (though covered) sky-deck with glass balustrades. White-themed decor with a bar, flexible lounge seating and a flat “cocktail area.” The Rooftop holds about 130 guests cocktail-style or theater-style (venuenow.com ) (officially 130 seated, 130 standing (venuenow.com )). It can seat roughly 110 at banquet tables (smoke.co.nz ). This space is all-weather (it has coverings and heaters) and offers 360-degree city and harbour views (www.hospitalitybusiness.co.nz ) (acb.aucklandnz.com ). Acoustically it’s live-airy – loud music carries, and sound crews often use flat-pack staging equipment there.
Hobson Ballroom: A large indoor hall on level 1 with ivory walls and high ceilings. It can seat ~200 people theater-style or ~120 for a sit-down dinner (nzvenues.co.nz ), or host 150 standing cocktails. (nzvenues.co.nz ) The room has a pro-quality speaker system and lighting on ceiling trusses (for speeches, dancing or presentations). Sightlines are generally good from any row of chairs. The back-of-house has a small green room for event staff.
Kingston Ballroom: The biggest banquet space at Rydges. It fits up to 250 guests theater-style, 200 banquet seats, and 130 cocktails (nzvenues.co.nz ). Segmented into two sub-rooms (Kingston 1 and 2) with movable partition, it’s used for big conferences and receptions. Large projector screens and stage lighting rigs are installed when needed. The layout is square-ish so even front and back have clear views.
Rimu Room (Boardroom): An intimate VIP space with one long native rimu wood table for about 20 attendees (nzvenues.co.nz ). Ideal for private meetings or small dinners, its acoustics are naturally quiet.
In general, the best views are naturally on the Rooftop (harbor skyline). In the ballrooms, midfield seats have good sightlines for speakers or screens, whereas tables near pillars or the back corner can be slightly obstructed. There are also several breakout rooms and pre-function lobby spaces with casual lounge seating to mix or break out. All areas have on-site AV technicians, free Wi-Fi, and ambience control. Do avoid the very back rows in a packed ballroom if you want to hear clearly; in the Rooftop watch your head on the glass balustrades when dancing close to the edges. Otherwise most spots are well laid out for divides between stage, dancefloor and audience.
Getting There and Parking
Location: Rydges Auckland sits at 59 Federal Street (corner of Federal & Kingston), right downtown. It’s just off Queen Street (Auckland’s main commercial artery), only about a 3-minute walk to the Sky Tower and 7 minutes to the Viaduct Harbour area (www.rydges.com ). The hotel’s rooftop provides views of Waitematā Harbour to the north and the CBD skyline. The Britomart Transport Centre (train/bus hub) is around a 10-minute walk (0.8 km) east, and the Auckland Ferry Terminal (Queens Wharf) is about 800m north for Harbor ferries. Many city buses stop nearby on Wellesley Street (west of the hotel) or on Queen Street. Popular manifold routes like the 001 CityLink loop run every few minutes along Queen and Federal Streets.
Airport: Auckland Airport (AKL) is about 25 km southwest. By car/taxi it’s roughly 45–55 minutes depending on traffic. A taxi ride costs roughly NZ$75–$80 one-way (www.rydges.com ). For budget travel, the SkyBus runs express from the airport to downtown stops (like SkyCity, near Queens Wharf), then it’s a short walk or taxi to Rydges. Private shuttles and ride-share cars (Uber, Ola) are also widely available. One-way shuttle service can drop you at SkyCity for ~$35 (plus $8 per additional passenger) (www.rydges.com ).
Parking: Rydges offers onsite valet parking at NZ$55 flat per day (unlimited in/out, height limit 1.8m) (www.rydges.com ). Space is limited, so valet is first-come. The hotel cannot pre-book parking for you; if valet is full, there are public car parks nearby. For example, the Civic Car Park (Federal/Elliott Street) charges about $2.50/hour, capped at roughly $12.50 for evenings or weekends (heartofthecity.co.nz ). On-street metered parking is also available within walking distance (with similar hourly rates, and ticket machines or PayByPlate pay stations). Note that CBD traffic can be busy during commute hours, so allow extra travel time. Rideshares and taxis can drop off or pick up guests directly at the Federal Street lobby entrance.
Alternate transit: Auckland’s ride-share apps operate 24/7, and there are late-night buses (NiteLink services on Queen and Federal) for off-peak travel. Many guests simply walk to nearby attractions: Queen Street shops and Wynyard Quarter restaurants are less than 5 minutes away on foot, and the Waterfront (Viaduct) is about a 10-minute stroll (www.rydges.com ). For harbour access, Wynyard or Queens Wharf ferry terminals are within a short walk north.
Inside the Venue
From the street, guests enter into a modern lobby decorated in dark wood and neutral tones. Expect a professional concierge team at check-in (generally open 24/7). Security is standard hotel-level (no bag checks unless required for a particular event). The atmosphere is stylish yet relaxed – pops of NZ art and cozy lounge furniture give a welcoming vibe. After security, the cut stone-floor foyer leads toward the CUT Restaurant and bar on one side and elevators on the other. The CUT Restaurant – with its warm wood tables and open kitchen – serves all-day dining (Auckland cuisine with local ingredients) and has a full bar (www.hospitalitybusiness.co.nz ). For drinks, Rydges’ bar and rooftop both mix cocktails and local beers; room service is available in guest rooms and for event dinners. Key facilities include complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel (acb.aucklandnz.com ) (fast enough for video calls) and an updated guest-room TV and sound system (rooms now have 50-inch “smart” TVs (www.hospitalitybusiness.co.nz )). There’s a small fitness center/gym on the lower level for guest use. Restrooms are placed near every event space (usually in halls between ballrooms or next to the bar) and are clean and spacious.
When attending an event, you’ll usually proceed through the lobby or a dedicated event entrance, where staff will check your name or ticket/reservation. Larger events often have pre-function areas with buffets or displays set up in the foyer. Clothing storage: for formal events there may be a coat-check area, but typically guests handle their own coats in lobby bins or on wall hooks. The building has accessible ramps and lifts to all floors and venues, so wheelchairs can reach every space (including the rooftop). In short, inside you’ll find polished modern decor with plenty of seating nooks in the lobby and dining area. Lighting is generally bright in the meeting rooms and softer in the bar/lounge. The hotel is smoke-free indoors; a covered smoking area is provided outside.

The vibrant Nelson St / Victoria St foodie hub is about a 10-minute walk west, featuring Viaduct Ale House brewpub and icon Harbour Restaurant at the Maritime Museum.
SkyCity Complex: Three blocks south on Victoria Street, SkyCity Auckland casino and entertainment complex houses multiple bars and eateries (including Depot Eatery by chef Al Brown, plus a fine-dining steakhouse). It’s also a convenient spot to grab a quick drink after a show or to catch a movie.
Other Hotels: If you need nearby accommodation or a fallback, note there are several hotels in the area. Novotel (with its Federal Bar downstairs) is next door, and the Sofitel/GRAND Café is two blocks east (on Lorne St). Further along, there’s the Cordis (Langham) Auckland, SKYCITY Grand Hotel, and central hostels.
Transportation &timing: Taxis and Uber rideshare are easy to get 24/7 from outside Rydges. If you have time before an event, consider a quick harbour ferry to Devonport for a coffee with a view, or a stroll along Queen Street shops. Late at night, the city’s 24/7 airport shuttles and NiteRider bus routes run nearby. On event days it’s wise to arrive at least 20–30 minutes early, since Rydges staff can guide you to the right door and seat in time for curtain. (During big events, spillover crowds or undercover security checks can add a few extra minutes.)
What Makes This Venue Special
Rydges Auckland’s flair comes from its blend of city-edge style and luxurious Kiwi warmth. Architecturally it stands out with its rooftop – an outdoor bar-space perched ten storeys high, which is unusual in NZ’s venues. It’s one of Auckland’s only dedicated rooftop event venues (nzvenues.co.nz ), where you can party with 360-degree city views. Legend has it that many new-year’s-eve celebrations and movie premieres (held in Auckland Live venues nearby) spill out onto Rydges’ rooftop for private after-parties because the view of Sky Tower fireworks is unbeatable. Inside, Rydges was completely modernised in 2022; everything from the guest rooms to the main bar was given an upscale refresh. The award-winning in-house restaurant, The CUT, has long been a favorite for business lunches and special-occasion dinners (its effort to use New Zealand-sourced seafood and prime beef is part of the local culinary scene) (www.hospitalitybusiness.co.nz ). Another cultural note: Rydges often hosts local community galas and fundraisers, giving back to Auckland arts/charity sectors. Musicians and DJs love playing on the rooftop precisely because of the view and vibe. Business travelers and concert-goers appreciate that Rydges is a stone’s throw from the University of Auckland and Spark Arena, making it a convenient base. In short, what makes Rydges special is its unique sky-high terrace coupled with a full-service hotel experience – giving guests and event planners the feeling of being “above the city” yet right in its beating heart (www.hospitalitybusiness.co.nz ) (www.rydges.com ).
Visitor Tips and Information
Accessibility: Rydges is largely wheelchair-accessible. There are ramps and elevators to all floors and event spaces (including the Rooftop Terrace). Accessible guest rooms with roll-in showers are available on request, and service animals are allowed. The venue has accessible restrooms and signage. Staff can assist with mobility needs – just contact the front desk in advance if you need special assistance.
What to Bring: For events, bring a photo ID and your ticket or reservation confirmation. It’s a smart idea to pack weather-appropriate attire (the rooftop is covered but can get chilly after dark, so a light jacket is wise in winter). Comfortable shoes are recommended if you plan to dance on the Rooftop or move between standing and seated areas. Don’t forget your camera or phone for the views! For overnight guests, the lobby also has a currency exchange and small sundries shop.
Don’ts and Etiquette: Avoid bringing large backpacks or alcohol/food from outside – standard policy forbids outside drinks in the bar or event rooms (security may ask you to store them). Photography is generally fine in public areas, but professional camera or video filming during events might need prior approval. Dress code is casual-smart for most gatherings – T-shirts and jeans are okay, but some business events may expect collared shirts or business-casual. Smoking is only allowed in designated outdoor areas. Children under 18 usually are not admitted to pure nightlife events or bars after dark, so plan childcare accordingly. Tipping: service is included (liquor tax is covered in drink prices), so tipping is appreciated but not required.
Insider Tips: The hotel asks guests to check out by 11 am, and late checkout can be arranged (subject to availability) if you need an extra hour before catching a flight or meeting. If you want a quiet room, ask for a corner suite facing away from the lift shafts (24-hour corridors can be busy). The CUT restaurant is popular, so booking a table in advance for dinner is wise if visiting then. Wi-Fi is free for all guests(complimentary high-speed) (acb.aucklandnz.com ), but for large group events you may want to confirm stable bandwidth if doing streaming. Lastly, many visitors overlook the rooftop’s daytime hours: even without an event, it’s sometimes open for hotel guests or special afternoon drinks – check the reception if you merely want the view. In general, arrive 20–30 minutes early for any show or conference to allow time for parking and finding your way. By following these pointers (and knowing the local lingo like “Lift” for elevator, “arvo coffee” for an afternoon cuppa, or using cashless pay apps common in NZ), you’ll blend right in and get the most out of your Rydges Auckland experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the capacity of the Rooftop Terrace?
The Rooftop Terrace at Rydges Auckland can hold up to about 130 people for a standing cocktail event. Seated dinners are typically limited to roughly 110 guests. In practice, the venue is often arranged with flexible lounge seating and sometimes high tables for casual events. (By contrast, the indoor Hobson and Kingston ballrooms seat up to 200–250 in theatre style.)
Where is Rydges Auckland located and how do I get there?
Rydges Auckland is at 59 Federal Street (corner of Federal & Kingston) in downtown Auckland. It’s about a 5-minute walk from Sky Tower and Britomart. Major bus routes on Queen and Federal streets stop nearby. From the airport, it’s a roughly 50–55 minute taxi or shuttle ride (about NZ$75–80 by cab) (www.rydges.com ). The city‘s SkyBus service also goes to central stops; from there it’s a short taxi/ride-share. Taxis or rideshares can drop you right at the Federal Street entrance. Street and valet parking are available on-site (valet is NZ$55/day) (www.rydges.com ), or nearby public car parks cost around NZ$2–3 per hour (heartofthecity.co.nz ).
How do I purchase tickets for events at Rydges Auckland?
Rydges itself does not have an on-site ticket office for shows. Open events (like rooftop music parties or fundraisers) are usually free or require online RSVP through local event sites or Rydges’ announcements. Private functions (weddings, corporate seminars) are by invitation only. In short, there isn’t a general “box office” at Rydges – if a public event is scheduled, you’ll typically find tickets or RSVP details through the promoter’s channels or Rydges’ own newsletter and social media. For room bookings, use the Rydges website or booking sites.
What are the room rates and how can I book accommodation?
Room rates at Rydges Auckland vary by room type, view, and season, generally ranging from about NZ$179 to $599 per night (www.newzealand.com ). The best way to book is through the hotel’s official website or by calling the reservations line. Rydges also participates in the EVENT Club loyalty program (members get extra discounts). During popular events or conventions, rooms can book up, so it’s wise to reserve early. Major booking platforms (Booking.com, Expedia, etc.) and some travel agents also sell Rydges rooms, but booking direct often provides flexible options (like free cancellation).
Are the venues and rooms wheelchair-accessible?
Yes. All public areas and event venues at Rydges Auckland are accessed by lifts, and there are accessible restrooms near each event space. The rooftop is elevator-accessible and has level flooring. The hotel offers at least one type of accessible guest room (with features like roll-in shower) – you should request it when booking. If you have specific mobility needs, it’s best to inform the hotel in advance. Service animals are allowed, and staff are happy to assist guests with disabilities.
What items are not allowed at Rydges Auckland events?
Standard hotel/event policies apply: outside alcohol or large coolers are typically prohibited, and any large bags may be subject to inspection (especially for ticketed evening events). No weapons or fireworks are allowed. Smoking is outlawed indoors (there is a designated smoking area outside). Generally, bring only personal items you’ll need – if in doubt, contact the event organizer. For private events (like weddings), guests sometimes leave bags at the coat check or reception if requested. Dress is usually smart casual; no strict uniform code is enforced unless noted in a specific invitation.
Is the rooftop fully covered for bad weather?
Yes, the Rooftop Terrace is designed for all-weather use. It has heavy-duty waterproof blinds/walls that can be lowered when it rains or is windy. There are also outdoor heaters for cooler evenings. This “all-weather” setup (www.hospitalitybusiness.co.nz ) means events can go on even with light rain. That said, in a heavy downpour the blinds will be closed, so while you can still enjoy the view through glass panels, dancing outdoors would likely stop until the weather clears. In planning terms, the hotel treats the rooftop as usable year-round.
What are typical check-in and check-out times?
Standard check-in is in the afternoon (typically 3:00 pm from when Rydges re-opened) and check-out is by late morning (around 11:00 am). If you need early check-in or a late check-out, it’s best to arrange this in advance (often they can accommodate for a small fee, subject to availability). During large conference bookings, these times are generally fixed, so plan your travel accordingly. Guests attending events but not staying overnight can still access the hotel lounge and restrooms once doors open for that event.
Is Wi-Fi available and free at Rydges Auckland?
Complimentary wireless internet (Wi-Fi) is offered throughout the hotel and all event spaces (acb.aucklandnz.com ). Guests can connect without extra charge. The network is reasonably fast (suitable for streaming and video calls in rooms). For very large conferences, the in-house AV team can provide special networking solutions or dedicated bandwidth, but for normal stays and meetings, the free Wi-Fi is usually sufficient.
How far are the Sky Tower and Viaduct from Rydges?
Both are very close. The Sky Tower is about a 3-minute walk (around 250 meters) from Rydges; you’ll easily see it from the lobby. Viaduct Harbour (and Viaduct Events Centre) is roughly 500 meters away (about 6–7 minutes on foot). The hotel website notes that a short stroll takes you from hotel to Viaduct and central city (www.rydges.com ). Many visitors walk: from the hotel you can turn north on Federal St and right on Victoria St West to reach Viaduct. Alternatively, a quick taxi/Uber or city bus ride can cover these distances.
Do I need to bring ID or age proof?
Yes – if you plan to drink alcohol or enter the bar (The CUT Bar or rooftop bar), you must be 18 or older and show photo ID (NZ driver's license, passport, etc.). Rydges enforces legal age rules for alcohol. Some events (like 21+ parties) may check age at the door. For general entry to the hotel (not drinking), age requirements only apply if specified. If an event has an age limit, that will be stated on the invite or ticket, and you will likely have to show ID. For hotel check-in, the guest who booked needs to be at least 18 (as noted in booking rules (www.newzealand.com )).
Are children allowed at shows or on the rooftop?
It depends on the event. Many rooftop daytime events (like brunch or afternoon sessions) are family-friendly, but evening parties often become adult-only (over 18). The hotel’s venues are essentially like bars at night. Unless the event description explicitly says “all ages,” assume it’s 18+. For example, private concerts DJs on the rooftop in the evening often have an 18+ policy. Yoga or family mixers could allow kids. Always check the event’s rules. (The CUT Restaurant and Bar downstairs welcomes families during meal hours.)
Are pets allowed in Rydges Auckland?
Rydges Auckland is generally not a pet-friendly hotel. Service animals (guide dogs, etc.) are permitted by law. Other pets or animals are usually not allowed in guest rooms or public areas. If you have a service animal, notify the hotel in advance to get appropriate arrangements. For events, no pets except service animals are allowed. If you’re traveling with a pet, you’ll need alternative pet boarding or look for pet-specific accommodations instead.
Is there a dress code for events at Rydges?
Most events at Rydges do not enforce a strict uniform, but smart-casual is safe. For professional conferences and dinners, business attire (slacks and a collared shirt or dress) is appropriate. The rooftop bar is more relaxed – neat casual or “evening wear” works. Swimwear, sports jerseys or overly casual clothes (like shabby shorts or beachwear) would be out of place. If you’re attending a formal gala or black-tie event (they sometimes happen here), the invite will specify. Otherwise, aim to look neat; Rydges staff generally do not check outfits for standard bookings.
What is the maximum noise level after hours at Rydges?
By local law, noise from events at Rydges must be reduced by 10:00–10:30pm on weekday nights (midnight on weekends) to respect nearby residences. In practice, rooftop and ballroom events will turn off loud entertainment by those times. Live musicians or DJs usually finish around 10pm on Friday/Saturday; after that, you can continue socializing at the bar, but bass levels are kept low. Overnight, the hotel is quiet – rooms are well-insulated, and in-house parties do not continue through the night. So while Rydges is lively in the evening, it quiets down after 10–11pm in compliance with venue rules.
Does Rydges Auckland have a restaurant or food service?
Yes. Rydges Auckland’s main eatery is The CUT Restaurant & Bar (www.hospitalitybusiness.co.nz ) (nzvenues.co.nz ). It’s open daily for breakfast and dinner service, featuring contemporary Kiwi cuisine (steak, seafood, tapas-style sharing plates). The CUT also serves full bar drinks and has indoor seating for about 100 guests. For events, this restaurant can be booked for private dinners or used as a catering kitchen. Room service is available to hotel guests outside of restaurant hours. In addition, the rooftop terrace offers a lighter food menu (snacks, cheese boards, etc.) during events. Basic meal allowances or snacks may also be provided during conference bookings.
Can I check in early or leave my bags if I arrive before check-in time?
Early check-in is based on room availability. If you arrive early, you can store your luggage with reception at no extra charge until a room is ready. Many guests take advantage of the hotel’s location to go sightseeing or have lunch nearby as they wait. Later, the staff will send a text or call when your room is cleaned. Similarly, if you have an evening event after leaving your room, you can often leave your luggage with bell service or use the lobby storage for a small fee. It’s usually best to mention your plans during booking or check-in so staff can assist.
