Mumbai-based filmmaker and singer-songwriter Pushan Kripalani, under the alias Slight Diversion, has unveiled a three-track EP ‘A Year Later,’ with the concept of time and its subtle changes explored in each song.
Cobbled together with musicians Nikhil D’Souza and Kenneth Basumatari, Slight Diversion’s newest release unfurls a soundscape packed with thought-provoking lyrics and elegant sonic arrangements guided by his deep and robust vocal textures. ‘10 to 1’ (Some Kind of Love) opens out the EP, ladled with melodic key segments, stable drum shifts, and sleek guitar action. The single speaks of glancing at the end of a relationship and progressing through many stages of time to a wistful understanding and acceptance.
‘Steady’ follows next, a reminder to Pushan’s younger self not to lose heart and to keep going, fueled by tidy guitar strummings and stabbing piano marks molding a striking five-minute composition. Ticking percussions, a hooky chorus, and a snazzy blues-rock guitar riff form the outro of the single. ‘This Little Pill,’ a lyrical reference to ‘Steady,’ concludes the EP, a tune about trying to avoid the big problems in one’s life with quick-fix solutions.
Discussing his new music, Pushan says, “In this new release, I’ve tried to explore a different sonic tapestry than the earlier simpler acoustic vibe by adding unusual instruments and creating a fuller sound, for which I have Kenneth, Nikhil, and Tapas to thank.”
He further elaborates, “This EP represents a vignette of incidents and experiences that I’ve grappled with for over a year. I try to reflect themes in my music that speak to the vagaries of the heart as I always have since my debut EP in 2019.”
